Newborn photos

Is anyone booking a newborn photography session?  I'm thinking of a package that would be like NB, 3M, 6M, 9M and 12M.

Anyone care to share links to the photographers you are considering?
What is a good price range?
Do you have any poses/props planned?

We booked a photographer a while back. Her link to her website is below. She charges 450$ for a newborn session... but shes seriously a pro and gave us a 50$ discount for DH being a vet. We paid a 50$ deposit and will be paying the 350 the day of. I plan on bringing some sentimental things with us like blankets that mean a lot to both grandmas... and just letting her do her thing. One thing I noticed is that in our area( CT) it can be pricey for a professional... and when you look into the packages people that were cheaper than our photographer made you pick and purchase photos individually and the lady we chose will give us all of the edited shots to print ourselves which I like and turns out to be cheaper...

  • When I had my DD, the hospital had a photographer come around and offer packages while you were still there.  It was great. For $100, we had 5 shots and got the ownership over the digital pics.  We used those for all of our birth announcements.  Plus, I didn't have to go anywhere with a newborn in the middle of winter!

  • We have a friend who is in the process of starting a newborn photography business. She'll be doing our maternity and newborn photos. The price can vary a LOT based on your area. In my area, they're quite expensive. For digital rights, think wedding photography expensive.

  • We are doing photos again, but I talked with our photographer on adjusting the package. I honestly didn't want 3, 6, and 9 month photos with DD. It was a huge hassle for me to try and get her places and having all those booked stressed me out. So, this go round, we are changing the package to be maternity, newborns, holiday session with both kiddos, and 1 year/cake smash for DS. I think cost for all of that is $600 and gives us about 20 shots from each session with no print requirements. It is a steal of a deal for photos in Dallas.

  • We did them with DD at our home -- I wouldn't have wanted to leave the house with her so young!  She wasn't very cooperative, but we still got some wonderful shots or her and us as a new family.  The photographer brought lots of different props like blankets, baskets, headbands, wraps, etc.  We had a few family items to use as well.  I think it was about $350 for the session (which was 2-3 hours) and included all of the edited digitals.  We'll do the same with DS this time, but we may go with a different photographer if we like how our maternity photos turn out.

We just went to jcpennys! So much cheaper and I've gotten a bunch of great shots. Their sheets are 4.00 and they can do all kinds of fancy edits too.

They have a bunch of props there and I've never paid more than 50 bucks for a session. I've done all my kids there or at Target potrait which uses the exact same software.

  • @Katm89 I'm so glad I read your post! I'm also in CT and I've been looking around for photographers and it looks like she's only about 1/2 hr or so away!

@Caitlinj187 I did a lot of research when picking her. She was on the news and has won awards for her photography. I'm very confident the money is worth it. She does the photo session at her studio in rocky hill and shes been doing this for something like 15 years so I am comfortable just giving her the lead and watching.
  • I'm with @Katienu the hospital has a photographer that comes. It can be expensive but was so pleased with DS1 photos. With DS2 that is my biggest regret not getting the pictures done right then and there. We said we would go to the Picture people in Buy Buy Baby but just didn't happen.

  • Our hospital had someone from Mom365 come around. We didn't buy their pictures (we snapped our own of him in their pose) but their sister company Life365 was offering a free 5x7 if they come to our house. We did that and bought the package of 1 year, 2 year, and 3 year 5x7s plus at his 3y we get a family portrait. This actually works out well for us because DS turns 3 less than a week after my due date so we'll get a family portrait of the 4 of us.

@Duffgurl @Curls919 & @Katienu I looked into a photographer at the hospital and our hospital doesn't do that... so ladies definitely ask when you do your tour!
  • I was given a free grow with me session (NB, 3, 6, 9 & 12) In exchange for the photographer to use my daughter for marketing. TBH, we have WAY to many photos. I know people say you can't have too many but we really have too many professional photos. They are mostly just in boxes because I would feel weird having like..20+ photos out. This time we are paying for NB, 6 & 12 and its about $500.
  • Our hospital has a photographer available to do newborn pics at the hospital. We have pro pics of DS at just 12 hours old. We're in a few of them, too.

After that, we opted to just go to Portrait Innovations for his 3, 6, 9, and 12 month pictures. The idea of spending an exorbitant amount of money on pictures wasn't appealing. We were able to get studio pictures at a decent price and still have those milestones.

We plan on doing the same thing this time.

  • @LWC1112 I'm also in the Dallas area and just started looking around for a newborn photographer.   Would love to know who your contact is.  Looked around in Frisco today and many were more than I paid for my wedding.
  • @ShawnaLynn83 I'll send you her info through a pm tomorrow when I'm on my work computer. I found her through a Facebook friend of mine who always has gorgeous photos.

  • FYI even if your hospital offers photos check them out. Our hospital photos were such a joke with DD1

agree with @ThisisNumber3... if newborn pics are important to you at all, I'd recommend lining up a photographer (obviously you won't know the date in most cases, but having someone picked out and ready) even if you know your hospital will send their photographer around.  We had a Mom365 photographer come while we were in the hospital, and the pictures were fine, but nothing that we framed in our house or used for birth announcements.  I think they only took 3-4 shots, and they didn't really seem to be edited.  Maybe I'm just picky, but I'm very glad we had the newborn photographer lined up to come to the house for more photos when DD was about 10 days old.

Edited to add that if you end up loving your hospital pics, you can probably cancel/ decide not to book the newborn photographer.

  • @cm716 JCP or Target can really vary depending on who you get. If you can, especially around holiday time, requesting a certain photographer will generally get better results. The company hires people, trains them for less than 20 hours then tosses them into a sitting with a newborn and toddler and thinks it'll end well. Sometimes it does - usually no. But, they will honor a photographer request, so you can make sure to get someone who has been there for years, and does this year round.

We'll likely do JCP, and buy the image cd. Right now it's 69.99, its normally 99.99 and that includes every shot taken - then we'll just print off of shutterfly. I have so many $20.00 promotional gift cards to shutterfly from baby event bags (Like seriously four or five) so that should work out well. We do have a lot of wall space, and this is the first grandchild on my side and DH's family is so far away.

I used to be a professional photographer, so I have been considering if it makes more sense to buy lights (I still have pro quality cameras) and a couple of backdrops and just do them myself. I miss it, but I needed a career which paid better, so it might be something I would enjoy doing as a hobby again... I really can't justify spending a few hundred on photography supplies AND taking him to a studio... I'm figuring I will see how newborn photos go, and how I feel after the birth.

I'm a newborn and maternity photographer and will be doing his myself:) here is a sample of my work! Check out brooksphotography.co if you are from central il and would like to book!!

As far as price goes-it will greatly vary depending on your location and how well the photographer is trained, studio size, ect. I charge $150 session fee and $300 product minimum. I do not include digitalis because I want my clients to have heirloom quality products displayed, not Cosco prints.. But that's just me!!
if you decide to go to a beginner make sure they are trained on safely posing your little ones!!!

  • We are using the same photographer that did our wedding and maternity pictures. She is beyond reasonable and we get along really well. It's only $175 and we get a USB with all good, edited photos. We can order photos from wherever we want. She will travel up to us and do them in our home, which is a major plus. I only plan on newborn photos; I'd really like to get a nice digital to use for the rest until we do another shoot (probably for Christmas 2017).
  • We're using the same photographer for both maternity photos and newborn photos. We will pay $175 for each session, full gallery of photos with rights to reprint. She will be coming to our house for the newborn ones.
  • I literally just yesterday asked a local FB board for recommendations and emailed 8 photographers. In central MA and they ranged from $350-$800 for a single session. The ones that included multiple sessions like 6 month, 12 month were over $1,000. No prints included.

The one I'm going with is $400 for the 2-3 hour session and 25 edited digital images, 1 canvas, and a few prints. I realize it's "a lot" but I tried to go cheap with my wedding photographer and got fucked over and left with only 8 wedding photos. So I refuse to cheap out again on something so important to me.

  • Anybody in the Kansas City area?? I have no idea what I should expect pricing wise and what's reasonable in terms of the number of photos you get out of your session. Things are usually pretty pricey here, but recommendations on someone who would be worth it would be awesome.
  • I won a mini maternity and mini newborn session from an awesome photographer. It comes with a very limited about of photos (5 digital for the maternity session and a $300 product credit for the newborn session). I had planned on purchasing a little more as I won it but I just looked at the packages and omg... It's crazy expensive. $95 per digital image. I totally respect her work and pricing but since I most likely wouldn't have done maternity or newborn photos, I don't know if I can justify spending $500 on a couple photos. I'll probably just use the money towards a family mini session with one of our regular photographers for holiday photos.

We have a neighbor who is a photographer of some sort and has offered to come by (either at the hospital or when we get home). I don't know how much of a professional photographer he is (he still has a day job and I've only seen a few photos he's shared on Facebook -- they were ok), but he does have the nice camera and all that. So I figure we will take him up on the offer since it will be free! My only concern is this: my DH has made friends with him more than I have in the last year or so, and while I think he's a nice enough guy, he drives me nuts because whenever we invite him over he sticks around forever and wears out his welcome. The guy does not know when to leave. He has fallen asleep on our couch after dinner a few times. If he's going to come over right after the birth, I'm going to have to coach DH to say "thank you so much for doing this, but now we need to get some rest," or something like that.
