Baby swing advice please.

My husband didn't like the idea of a baby swing and preferred a basic bouncer seat so we got that instead. We just started using it at 6 weeks and I've found that Lucine gets bored in it unless I sit there and entertain her. I don't mind doing that but it would be nice to have a seat to put her in near me while I cook or do something else for a few minutes that doesn't cause her to freak out. I think a swing with a rocking motion and maybe some hanging toys might keep her entertained for a wee bit while I cook. I talk to her and sing while she is in the seat but it's not enough. She wants face time with me instead.

My question is this... What swing or bouncer do you all use and how do you like it? Also what is the age or size limit on a swing or bouncer? Anyone else have experience with a baby who gets bored easily and wants to see mommy's face all day?

My babies like to be worn but have not liked the swings or bouncy seats at all. Also not the mommaroo. :/
As far as propping up they have liked the boppy for very short amounts of time or short stints of the tummy time mat with all the mirrors, toys, music light thing, basically stuff to see/entertain.
But I do know some babies love their swings. But that hasn't been my experience.

  • The swing was the best thing ever with my son and now this baby too. We just have a junky old fisher price one that a million babies in my circle of friends have used, they don't even make this type anymore. We mostly just use it to help them fall asleep when they're fussy because the motion seems to be helpful. If you're just looking for a place to sit them while you're getting stuff done, my girlfriend has this awesome bouncer seat by Nuna called the Leaf and every baby I know has loved it, but I'm guessing it is hella spendy because all of her baby stuff is.

We just bought our second swing and this one is a winner. We got it from Walmart. It's a fisher price snugabear swing. It rocks side to side or front to back. Our other swing was only side to side and Mila hated it. We put her in this one and she fell asleep for two hours! It also have lots of music and the mobile is motorized so it moves on its own. Love love love it.
  • My baby hates most things meant to soothe including pacifiers and her swing. I have a graco gliding swing, and I wonder if it's the straps she hates. She seems much more comfortable in her fisher price stuff.
  • My LO gets bored in her bouncer but loves her swing (Graco Glider LX). It was the first piece of baby gear she actually liked. She takes all her naps there and has started enjoying just hanging out in it too. It has a vibration feature, music/white noise, and a detachable toy bar. It's not small or portable, though, so I don't know how it would work for you if you want to be able to just set her up near you wherever you are. They do make small portable swings but I don't have any experience with them. Have you tried a floor gym type thing with toys and mirrors? My LO is a little too young yet to interact with much, but she likes looking at things, at least for a few minutes. :)

Otherwise, I second the suggestion to wear her. I wouldn't fry bacon or anything while wearing a baby, but it is awfully nice to have your hands free while still keeping LO close! I have the K'Tan wrap and it works really well so far.
  • Corbin loves his rockaroo. It's a little more expensive but we really needed something that didn't take up a lot of space. It's been a lifesaver for us when we just can't get him to sleep. He loves to be rocked to sleep.
  • We have a bouncer that has a detachable rail with toys hanging. It also vibrates. He seems to like it and takes the occasional nap in there. It's a hand-me-down so I doubt they make it anymore, but they sell similar stuff. We didn't get swing because our house is small and we didn't want to take up space with it. I think bouncer are only safe until they can sit up on their own. I think swings are similar.

Once he is grabbing at toys more we'll probably switch to the play gym mat for this purpose.

  • We have the mama roo and it is worth every penny. Has five different motions, speeds and sounds. DS loves it . Def life saver
  • We have a fisher price snugabunny swing given to us by friends. Adeline looooves it. We could probably leave her in it all day! She also loves her play mat. She gets pretty excited by seeing herself in mirrors which the swing and playmat both have. She loves the moving thing above her on the swing too. Essentially it's a lifesaver. Definitely lets me get some hand free time! I try not to baby wear too much because my boobs give me enough forward pulling on my back as it is!

Its hit or miss with swings though from what I can gather. Some love them some hate them. Try and get something second hand if you can...just in case!!

we have the Fisher-Price My Little SnugaMonkey Special Edition Cradle 'n Swing. It was the best money we ever spent. We bought a cheaper travel swing at first and DS hated it. So we shelled out the money for a better swing at about 3 months. He loved it. He liked the side to side motion and the noises and music.

  • We have an ingenuity swing and Pollie loves it! It swings side to side or front to back and can also vibrate. It also plays music, white noise or you can hook your iPod up to it to play whatever you want. There's also a mirror so she can see herself and a mobile which lights up different colors and has little animals that circle. It's amazing!
  • I just ordered a snuga after reading this thread. My baby haaaaaates her graco swing.

We have a secondhand swing that LO loves, she's also really into the Solly wrap. We both wear her around the house all of the time.

LO isn't a fan of the rnp. She'll tolerate it for a few minutes. As for the swing it's hit or miss. Sometimes she'll nap for hours in it. Sometimes a few minutes. Sometimes she'll flip the minute I set her down. I'm jealous of those whose kids like bouncers and swings for naps. Naps are spent on me only.

I am jealous of all the babies who can be put down while awake. My LO won't let me put her down in anything for more than a few minutes (swing, bouncer, mat, doesn't matter she hates it all).

We have this one also and it is a total success for us too! He will sleep in there for long stretches or sometimes just space out and stare at the mobile. Our bouncy chair has not been so successful thus far. We also have the boppy infant lounger, which doesn't move or do anything special, but which LO likes to chill in for short spells.

  • I just got and put together the snugabear swing. It looks awesome, but I'm nervous that only one screw is used to hang the seat. I feel like I'm living on the edge putting her in it.
  • The swing exacerbates my kids reflux. Boo.
wish I'd gotten a mamaroo instead

Yep. I'm with you guys. Both of my boys reject/rejected pacifiers, swings, vibration, etc. I rely on baby wearing or doing things one-handed. I'm just thankful that #2 has been a little more laid-back so far.
  • Thanks for all the input. We decided to stick it out with the boring bouncer seat instead of getting a new swing which she might not even like. I might buy one of those arches that has clip on toys to stick on there so she has something to look at and eventually reach for and play with. After thinking about it I thought since she doesn't seem to be soothed by anything except being held by me or MH I can't imagine that a swing would do the trick either.
