Weekend vents

ok, so my sister babysits LO every other Sunday. She also has a dog. Usually he is pretty chill around LO and if he gets too close my sister tells him to back off (the dog).
Today,  my parents picked up LO from my sisters house and when they walked in, the dog got really excited started jumping and scratched LO's leg in excitement. ( didn't break skin it's just red marks on his leg -- I'll attach a photo) I didn't know this had happened until I went to pick LO up from my parents house.
I called my SO because I didn't want him to be upset I didn't tell him ( there was an instance LO fell and I didn't tell him) well long story short SO is super mad about these scratches and thinks my sister wasn't watching LO...

Ive washed his leg off and I put some diaper rash cream on it but really there's nothing I can do about it, it was a total accident and SO is acting like someone chopped off LO's toes.......

Re: Weekend vents

  • These things happen. I've been on the floor with my LO doing tummy time and the dog still managed to scratch LOs leg. If the skin wasn't broken then there really isn't any reason to worry about infection. Hopefully your SO calms down about it soon!

Im hoping that when SO comes home and actually sees it he will realize he was over reacting..
  • @carlyhammond I literally had almost this same exact situation happen to me.  My sister watches my LO two days a week and has 3 dogs (a lab and 2 german shorthaired pointer puppies).  Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and we have two big dogs of our own.  Her puppies, who are not little puppies anymore, have endless amounts of energy and are jumping all over all the time.  I absolutely trust my sister and know she provides the best care I could ask for but the wild dogs were making me so nervous.  I held off on saying anything until I worried myself into anxiety.  I finally said something and she was so offended that it ended up turning into a HUGE argument!  My whole family got involved and we didn't speak for a few days.  She thought I was accusing her of being a bad mother and incapable of taking good care of my daughter etc.  After the storm settled, we were able to talk it out and now she puts the two wild dogs in their crates for the duration of the day while she babysits.  Just like yours, my SO was extremely upset and ready to put LO in daycare, even though the dogs never actually jumped on her.  Things have been so much better and even though it caused a whole lot of drama, the end results were good for everyone.

It's so hard when it's your family that is involved.  I hope you are able to figure it out without any hurt feelings from anyone.
  • Hopefully your SO calms down about it. It's not easy thinking that your LO could be hurt, especially under anyone else's watch. But unfortunately, the reality is that things happen. It was not intentional. Those first few "wounds" are hard to accept... now I look at my toddler, who is one big walking (more like running full speed) bruise, and just shake my head. It's happened to each of us as babies, and most of us turned out pretty decent ;) and yes, animals are a pretty easy scapegoat (for lack of a better word) for things like this, but it could have happened anywhere or under anyone's watch, pets or not.
  • Yes I know.. I'm only upset because my sister didn't tell me herself. I wish I was informed when it happened and not hours later when I picked him up and my dad was like " oh, by the way look at his leg"..
By the time SO got home it was faded ( because of the cream I hope) and he was still mad about it- he thinks dogs can't jump high and LO was on the floor alone when it happened. I don't know exactly what happened im just going to hope it was truly an accident.
Picture of his leg now - barely noticeable
