NTTCR - Help Me Figure Out a Birthday Plan for DH

Well crap, it's my husband's birthday in two weeks and I haven't got a thing planned. He doesn't like attention being called to him on his birthday and generally refuses to even tell people when it is - so I can't plan a party. In times past, we have had people for dinner and eaten an unmarked cake with sprinkles on it.

I'm feeling plenty energetic, but not creative this year. Anyone? Low key ideas? He loves Nintendo video games, music no one has ever heard of, cats and being my sweetie-pie, if that helps. He's turning 27 - such a precious young thing that he is.

Old school Nintendo? I'm thinking make an N64 shaped cake, complete with his favourite video game cartridge, even if it's just for the two of you. Or a reason why I love you card/book while somehow incorporating his favourite video games in it (think Pinterest and their chocolate bar cards...I love you mounds(with a mounds bar) etc). Lol I hope that makes sense

@roper2617 I love that, maybe I'll go to the cake decorating store down the road and try my hand at fondant. There are these Mario mushroom cupcakes I've thought of trying, but I have no experience. He wouldn't mind if they were a mess.

I'm horrible at baking, parties, and entertaining in general. I wish I could help.

Like your H, I prefer low key for my birthday as well. I usually do lunch and shopping. Doubt that will appeal to a guy though. Lol. I like the video game idea.

My DH is pretty much the same, very low key- I usually just take him out for a nice dinner (or for you since you are such a fab cook, cook him a nice dinner) and make him a cake...last year I didn't have a lot of time so I bought him one. You should totally make a Nintendo cake, that would be awesome!

A Nintendo cake would be awesome! I have a soft spot for old NES games and still play them on my wii. Mario mushroom cupcakes would be awesome too!

i'm so bad at trying to plan special celebrations, i usually make reservations at a nice dinner and get him cool new sneakers (he's a sneaker freak). I'm sure that doesn't help you though, sorry! I vote nintendo cake!

@iceandsnowflakes29 @Spartanrd4 Eating out is such a pain for us! Between his allergies and us both being flavours of vegetarian, it's always a last resort. There aren't any nice and tasty vegetarian restaurants here - it's either nice and mediocre or divey and delicious. It feels like I cook special things all the time and I wobble under the pressure of doing something extra special.

His birthday is the day before Canada Day, so maybe I'll get his best friend over and we'll have Mario cupcakes and eat roti. I got him some vintage jazz records and we're ordering these weirdo Nintendo vans. He's not really a person who wears his interests on his t-shirts, if that makes sense, but he's pretty into shoes. He wants to learn calligraphy, so maybe I'll go get him a kit. Well, he wants to learn everything, so it's not hard to buy for him, it's just hard to DO something for him. A mycological society membership? Bird watching club membership? Diving lessons?

@MooFish2364 Yes! He does, too! And he has a replica of the Japanese original NES so he can play the actual cartridges sometimes. I love playing Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3.

@brooklyngirl18 Sneakers should be on their way soon! They're not shipping to Canada, so they're going to a friend first and then to us.

Ah dang I was going to suggest one of those Japanese dupe Nintendo machines! I have one and love it! Super Mario 3 is my all time fave!

My DH is totally the same. He just turned 30 and we did absolutely nothing for it. He hates being the center of attention and hates parties for him. I think this birthday was especially hard as we were still in the wake of our second loss and were both still grieving hard.

I think the sneakers sound awesome. Your plans sound pretty low key, but fun, so I'm sure he will love it. I'm sorry I'm not a very good idea girl.

Those cupcakes actually look like they have white chocolate candy melts on them, and not fondant. Although I'm sure you can use either to get the same effect! I've used fondant with some moderate success in the past, especially for little shapes and whatnot like that. My advice is to only pull out a small chunk at a time to work with, because if it dries out too much it won't want to do anything you want it to do!

@dpjennifer Cool, I definitely don't want to track down vegan white chocolate right now. I have to order online for that, I think. I've seen fondant ones with the same design. I think I'm up for the challenge. I can make any cake, but decorating is not my talent in life.

I know this thread kind of died, but for anyone with a sciency, nerdy type DH like mine, there's a new subscription box out from the people of the Vsauce YouTube channel. It's called Curiosity Box, and has a tee shirt, some sort of actual science experiment, and other stuff. It comes quarterly. I just ordered one for a semi-Father's Day present/just because for DH. He got me something for Mother's Day even though I protested, so he gets something too, despite his protests. Too bad it doesn't ship til July! You can see it here at thecuriositybox.com (not to be confused with the .ca address for my Canadian friends, as that one is for children!). I'm super excited because it's so hard to find things DH likes.

All great ideas. Not sure if you are into cooking, but a special menu home cooked meal is always nice ( with the awesomely decorated cake!) Once I got DH some video games that we could play together like little big planet or racing/ cart games are fun for couples to play together. We also got that dancing game thats fun to do together on the wii.

My dh's bday is tomorrow ( he's told me he's a little bummed it's fallng on father's day and that some random dude wished him a happy father's day and it got him upset

) We will be with family tomorrow, so today I took him to s surprise boot camp obstacle course class where military guys drill you. It was sooo hard but also fun. He's been into fitness lately and I love surprising him with stuff. Dinner tonight and I got him a cool t shirt on etsy that is a combo of his fav band's logo and his fav sports team. Oh yea - so there's another idea- check out etsy for nintendo themed stuff!

@KarenBeth714 I do cook! Constantly! I develop recipes, so it's a huge part of my identity. Happy birthday to your husband! I hope it's a wonderful day, despite the hard bits. Ordering through Etsy is tough in Canada unless the seller is here because our postal service is slow as molasses and you'd think it came wrapped in gold because of the prices. I would have had to have been way more prepared to do so, which I am not, haha.

It's been settled: I ordered the Nintendo shoes and sent them to a friend in California who is sending them to us (they won't ship to Canada). I got a vintage jazz record put out on Blue Note and a record of Frank Herbert reading a bit of Dune. His bff is coming for dinner: we'll eat something inspired by the season (probably some variety of Caribbean), taste a new wine (new hobby of ours!!), eat Mario mushroom cupcakes and enjoy each other's company.
