Fetal HR @7w

Hi all,
I just had my u/s today and measured at 7w2d (a little ahead of where I anticipated). The little heart was just flickering away.... But they only measured heart rate at 86bpm. Now, I'm freaked out. Isn't that way low?! It's just the imaging center so they won't tell me anything really... And I don't see the doctor until the 27th!

Re: Fetal HR @7w

  • I'm not sure on the numbers - but maybe if you called your doctors nurse line and asked for a general range, they might be able to give you one? I'm sure Google gives a plethora of responses so if it was me, I would just call my OB. Yay for a heartbeat! We are due around the same time.

  • I did some research, not sure if its going to relax you or not but please note I'm not a doctor. It appears average heart rates are a little higher for that far, BUT early ultra sounds are not always super accurate. While pregnant with my daughter they changed my dd 3 times based off of ultra sounds. First it was Feb 25 then March 5 then back to Feb 25 she was born February 22. If by your calculations you get a dd a little later than what they got then baby might just be measured a little big right now. If so, the rate you were told today would be closer to the dd u estimated yourself. The rate should increase over the next few weeks so I personally feel like you shouldn't be over worried. I hope that made sense its kind of confusing. But of course calling your Dr to ask them might be more helpful and put your mind at ease.

  • I had this feeling that I would either a)feel so much better and relieved, or b)be devastated after today's scan - I was wrong. I'm so in the middle and just as anxiou. I know that realistically there's not much that can be don't if this is a bad sign, I'd just like to know... I'm going to call my doctor as soon as I double check the scans and make sure I was reading it right.
  • I talked to the Nurse at my OBs office. She basically said that there's not much that they COULD do if the baby's heart rate was dropping at this point. Also, it's possible the tech picked up MY heart rate. And, if I have any spotting or cramping that I should call and they will get me in.
  • Ugh good luck. I hope it was just a crap scan

I hope you're staying stress free, thinking about you

  • I read that because the baby's heart isn't 100% completely formed yet, you will have some inconsistent heart rates initially and as time passes, it starts to speed up.

Try not to stress. You probably just aren't as far along as they measured you. It's very common and would explain the heart rate. You even said that 7w2d was further ahead than you anticipated.

I'm sorry they couldn't be more encouraging.  Try to stay calm - machine monitoring at this early stage is still not as reliable as later on the pregnancy.  (Some doctors won't even look or schedule patients until they are past the 8 week mark because it is generally a tentative time).  Do the yogic breaths, go outside for a walk, get busy, post here and tell us how you are doing, etc.

Sending creepy internet hugs your way....

I'm so sorry for the uncertainty. It sounds like the nurse is somewhat lacking in bedside manner. PP have had great advice; just know you're in my thoughts!
  • Hugs... I really hope it was just your heartbeat they got.  I know the waiting is hard.  Hugs.

  • At 6w2d I thought 120 was low and I saw it wasn't... I think it's really hard to know for sure.  BUT I'm sure if your doc thought something was up he or she would tell you!

Mom of one adorable little boy and excited to do this again.

  • Thinking of you today! Let us know how you are doing. Hugs! I agree that it could have also been your HR. My US tech mentioned how difficult it is to catch their HB this early bc they are so so tiny. Sometimes it's near impossible. She has her patients hold their breath while she holds hers so that there is no movement whatsoever. Keep us posted with any updates.
  • I think you should ask for another ultrasound at your appt.  My last pregnancy measured 7w2d when I was 8w1d. HR was 126, also low for how far along I knew I was. I was really upset but the dr seemed to brush it off as no big deal. He gave me false hope which really made it so much worse when the pregnancy didn't work out. Especially considering I think he was concerned (without admitting it to me) bc he scheduled another ultrasound 3 weeks later. He could've advised me at least so I could have been more mentally prepared.
In your case, the fact that you are measuring ahead, definitely sounds like a good sign. But I would insist on another ultrasound.
  • Thank you everyone for the support. It's hard to stay positive, and I'm worried that I will relax and that will make it much harder if things DO turn out for the worst. Every little cramp, ache and feeling of discharge has me scared. I also know that there isn't much that I CAN do at this point. If nothing bad has happened by my appointment on the 27th, I'm gong to push for another scan. By that time I would be almost 9w, and things should be easier to see I would think.... Amazing how long 11 days can seem.
  • I don't know much (well anything) about how time is to the baby at this point, but I can't help but wonder if the baby were in some sort of resting type state.
