Bleeding after u/s and pelvic exam?

I started spotting reddish brown and then just brown last evening into this AM. I had a follow up vaginal u/s this morning where it was determined there's been growth since my first u/s last week (there were concerns originally because my hcg wasn't rising as it should have and my progesterone dropped). Fetal pole, yolk sac, and gestational sac were all seen today. Slight heartbeat was seen. Big improvement from last week's scan. Based on my LMP I should be 8w3d but I'm only measuring at 6w as I likely just ovulated late. They were happy with the progress between last week and today. I go back next week for another follow up scan.

I also got a pelvic exam so she could investigate the spotting. She said my cervix was nice and closed and that the spotting looked mostly like old blood. She wasn't concerned and said not to be surprised if I noticed an increase in the spotting throughout the day due to all the poking I got today. I'm also on oral progesterone and she said that can make the cervix more friable. I also have a platelet disorder which results in low platelets and therefore more easy bleeding.

Fast forward to now--I'm now bleeding dark red!! No real cramping. I'm not soaking a pad. Just mostly when I wipe or pee. It's freaking me out!! My last pregnancy ended in MC so naturally I'm worried about this. Has anyone else experienced similar bleeding after an internal u/s and pelvic exam?

Re: Bleeding after u/s and pelvic exam?

  • I am glad your ultrasound went well. I would assume if your doctor saod you can expect blood then any blood you see is ok. I had spotting after certain internal exams during my last pregnancy. I have a friable cervix from what my doctor has said so I sometimes bleed after an exam even when not pregnant.

  • How much blood? Enough to soak a sanitary pad? My OB is always cautious with bleeding (especially after my loss) and always asks for a call so maybe just give them a quick call to ease your worries. They will be able to determine whether or not you should be seen. Keep us posted!
  • I haven't soaked a pad yet. It's a dark red and I've passed a couple small clots. I'm not sure how to distinguish between "dark" and "bright" red, unless they're the same.

But I'm not having the cramping that I had with my last mc (which was oh so painful). I just can't imagine that everything looked decent this morning and now all the sudden it's happening. Unless it was already going to happen and the ultrasound somehow just gave it a final "push". Which I can't imagine either. I will plan to call in the morning if this doesn't stop by then. Ugh.
  • Checking in - how are you today??
  • The same happened to me often last time, up until after 1st tri. It's definitely not uncommon. If you aren't cramping or anything, chances are it's just from the exam.
