Lactation this early???

Anyone else lactating this early? I'm 18 weeks and feel like a freak of nature. I've never had a baby before, and everyone I've talked to has said that they didn't lactate until the last month or even after giving birth.
Don't get me wrong, I'm super exited that my body is doing what it's supposed to. Especially since I've suffered from PCOS and innovulation, I've always felt abnormal and never thought I'd be blessed to have made it this far in pregnancy. But I am worried that if I'm lactating now, maybe my milk will dry up by the time baby is here, since it isn't being used. I've heard this can happen after birth?
I'm hoping this just means I won't have a problem with supply as soon as my little man gets here

It's normal. I started leaking at 12w with my first and I'm leaking now at 19w with this one. It doesn't mean anything about your future supply.

The initiation of lactation (called lactogenesis) happens in two phases. What you are experiencing is the normal initiation of lactogenesis I and the production of colostrum. It starts around mid-pregnancy, so you're at just the right time for it. This will continue until a few days after birth, when lactogenesis II starts - your 'milk coming in.' That's when you start making 'mature' milk.

  • It's completely normal and you will find everyone and every pregnancy is different :). My last pregnancy in December which end in a loss I started lactating damn near the day I conceived (obviously a few weeks in) thats how I knew I was pregnant but with this pregnancy I just have crusties every once in a while and I'm almost 20w.
  • @dreamcatch-her Totally random question, but I am curious and you're the person I thought to ask. I know it's Ramadan and I've always been told that pregnant women don't have to fast if it would be too challenging. But is there a particular point in pregnancy at which that comes into effect, or is it at any point once you're aware of the pregnancy? I asked one of my Muslim classmates and she didn't know so I thought I'd ask you. Purely curiosity on my part.

@KilgraveMadeMeDoIt good question. It is not permissible to fast during pregnancy at all if there is reasonable concern for the welfare of the baby or the mother.
If there is no concern for the safety of the baby, then it is recommended to still perform fasting, but not a requirement. A pregnant woman is always welcome to make up her fasting later after she delivers the baby if she is uncomfortable fasting during her pregnancy.
I know plenty of women who have fasted and delivered healthy babies. I personally couldn't because of my blood sugar issues.
Obviously I recommend your friend speak with her local Imam if she's curious, but this is what I've come up with from my own research. I hope it helps.
