1st Trimester

HCG? Just found out a week ago that I am pregnant!

My husband and I got married last month. We had decided that we wanted to start a family right away, and apparently it happened extremely quick.

We waited to go on our honeymoon because the tour cruises we wanted to go on didn't open until later in the month. When we left for the honeymoon, I was at my next period day, and it wasn't there yet. (I had been fairly regular since I had been on the pill for a year and a half, and they stayed regular after I went off of it in march.) The girls were sore and I was running to the bathroom constantly, and just a feeling like I was pregnant.

I took some pee stick tests, and they came back negative. Waited a few days, still no period, took more, negative. Waited a few more days, same thing. We were getting ready to head back home and I was 2 weeks late, still reading negative results on 3 different types of tests. So I called my Dr and set up for a blood test as soon as we got back. I got the call a week ago exactly today, and she said I was 2 weeks pregnant. I was so excited, and she asked my last period start date (April 28th) and so she gave me my due date of February 2nd. I didn't think much of it.

Then I downloaded an app, and it said I was 6 weeks along. Which thoroughly confused me. But doing the math I knew I couldn't be 2 weeks along, since I was 2 weeks past my period, so I thought I was 4. Wasn't until I talked to my sister (who is on her 4th) and she explained to me why I was 6 weeks along.

That being said. I have an OB appointment the 29th, and so I got my bloodwork papers in the mail from my blood test a week ago. It said my HcG was around 48, which signals 2 weeks (according to the paper that was sent with me.) online I saw that HcG levels vary from person to person on weeks, so its not necessarily low for 6 weeks along, but since this is our first I'm a bit paranoid. Is that an okay HcG for 6 weeks along? I don't have any to compare it to, but I do see the OB for an u/s  in two weeks.

Thanks for reading my long post!

There's a wide range like you said... But since you're asking my level at 4 weeks was 114.

Unless you were temping there's no way to know exactly when you ovulated. It's possible you had an unusually long cycle. I wouldn't buy into too much until you have a second beta and know that it's increasing. Or just wait for the ultrasound.

  • Travel and stress/excitement are well known to delay ovulation so its very possible that given the wedding and then the travel that you had a longer cycle.  This would mean that even though your 6 weeks by your LMP, you actually ovulated later and therefore aren't as far along as that period date would indicate.  Even though you have had regular periods, as the saying goes "you're regular until you're not".  Past cycles can be a good guide for your baseline, but throwing in stress and travel can make even the most to-the-minute regular person different.  While LMP is a good generic guide, what is more important is what happens from here on out.  Early development is pretty standard across pregnancies, so looking for HCG to double is a good sign for you right now and then eventually an ultrasound could be useful for more accurate dating.

  • My HCG was 48 at 11dpo, so 3w4d. So yes, you are more than likely only 4 weeks along, you probably just ovulated late.

  • The number 48 isn't significant unless you had a follow-up 48-72 hours later to see if the numbers have doubled or not.   When your doctor does the first u/s in two weeks, they can use it to date the pregnancy so your due date could change depending on that u/s.  U could have O'd late.

    Congrats on your pregnancy.
