Anatomy Scan - two areas behind?

Hi all - if you had your anatomy scans, were all organs/limbs/bones measuring on track? Or were there things measuring a bit ahead or behind. My baby is measuring 3 days ahead by belly, femur, head --- but 4-5 days behind by humerus and cerebellum.  As you can imagine, my nerves are shot :(

Re: Anatomy Scan - two areas behind?

  • Did you ask your OB?

Both twins are little behind in weight, but humerus and leg bones are measuring two weeks ahead. My MFM had zero concerns.

Ultrasounds are not perfect. Sometimes babies are wiggly and the angle is not the best. I would presume that you will go back for another scan in a few weeks.

My boy was measuring ahead in most areas, but behind in femur length.....nearly a week behind everything else. I'm not so worried. He likely has inherited his daddy's short legs. I go back next week for another scan.

Try not to stress and stay off google.

  • OB is a new OB to me (and to the practice) and she didn't have much to say - which makes me even more nervous. I am going back in a month for another scan.
  • I'm no expert at all but I've heard you can't entirely go by the ultrasound estimates of size or weight, for example a friend's baby was estimated to be almost a pound bigger than what he was born at that night. No one actually said anything yet to me about my LO's weight or size and somehow I keep forgetting to ask...either PG brain or subconscious bc I'm afraid to ask and hear too many details to worry myself about. Did the person who told you those estimates indicate that it was something to be concerned about?

We are 21 weeks today but  measuring at 20 weeks 3days. The doctor said he's just a little guy and it's nothing to worry about all babies are different and develop at a different speed. But I was worried when I heard it too!
  • They just handed me the report.  No explaining until I asked and then still nothing.

Oh hmm....maybe ask "is this normal or something that indicates a problem?" and see if the OB gives a definitive answer? Other than giving semi answers like "it depends on...." or "it could be this or this," it would be hard for them to just say nothing I think?
  • At 19w2 days she was measuring a week behind on average and way behind in weight but overall nothing was said aside from "baby is at risk of IUGR" and have another scan next week at 23+2 to see if things are on track or not. Overall I know that an US isn't 100% accurate on weight and the farther along we go the less accurate they get. Babies move and wiggle and don't sit still so it is hard to get an accurate picture, I say ask at your next appointment/scan and try to stay away from Dr. Google. It took a long time to gets shots of DS last time because he kept curling up.

  • My baby has measure almost a week ahead at every ultrasound, but his legs were always a good 4-5 days behind everything else. I thought maybe he just got my short legs?? But at my anatomy scan on Tuesday, they finally caught up. I would assume babies, like kids, have growth spurts and different things grow at different rates sometimes. But as PPs said, ultrasounds will never be 100% accurate. Ask your doctor but try not to stress

  • Thank you all so much! I spoke to my nurse today, she was checking to see if the doctor thought we should rescan before the next u/s which isn't for another month.
  • Ultrasounds are up to 20% off for estimating weight, so Id imagine the lengths of different limbs and organs could also be off. And, if you look at any adults measurements, who is exactly in proportion? Probably no one. What they are looking for is that all the anatomy is there and that you dont have a small head with a huge body or vice versa. Your numbers dont sound concerning..........your OB would have made a big deal out of it if there was something to be concerned about.

  • My baby girl was a little ahead on a few measurements. My sister is an ultrasound tech and measurements can be off by up to 2 weeks in some cases. Babies move so much that it's not like scanning an adult's organs. My sister has scanned me and gotten different measurements during the same ultrasound because of baby's position. Also, not all techs measure exactly the same way. If your doctor isn't worried than it's probably fine.

  • Thank you all so much!
  • Ultrasounds are super imprecise, as PPs have already said. A few days ahead/behind are generally statistically insignificant. From someone who has had legit measurement issues in my first pregnancy, know that when your OB doesn't say anything then things are A-OK. It's nice to have a re-scan for peace of mind (and b/c those ultrasound techs sometimes open their mouths when their docs would prefer they didn't....for reasons like this).

Easier said than done, but try not to stress.

  • I'm sorry you're stressing! I hope they've reached back to you with some reassurance.

My tech and doctor both mentioned a 14 week window for margin. If anything measured within a week before or a week behind that they considered growth to be on target. I'm sure the thresholds vary by office, but your LO sounds to be on the target that my own doctor looks for :)
