Ghost UTI

So I had an OB appt. yesterday and did the usual pee in a cup thing. Today I get a call telling me I have a urinary tract infection that I didn't even know I had. I asked a nurse I work with and she told me that pregnant women can be asymptomatic.

So here I am waiting at the pharmacy for the Bactrim they prescribed me. This sucks. Anyone else have this happen?

Ps. For the thread about what to expect at prenatal appointments,  this is another reason they always tell you to pee in a cup. To check for this stuff, amongst other things I'm sure. Especially if you didn't even know it lol

Re: Ghost UTI

  • Yep had a bladder infection at 8 weeks and Dr told me and I looked at him like.... really? Cause I've had a uti before and I freaking knew it. But oh well. Guess I'd rather not have symptoms right?

  • OB warned me of that, but I haven't had it come up yet.  She said it's pretty common and you won't know it.

  • Yes! Same thing happened to me- just had another appointment and anxious to see if my 2nd culture comes back positive! The only possible symptom I had was frequency, which is also a pregnancy symptom so I assumed I was going a normal amount!
  • I was warned about it when I contacted my OB a couple weeks ago, worried about some symptoms.  She ended up testing for it, but thankfully I didn't have one.  So weird to me that you wouldn't have symptoms, but apparently that's how it goes and they test often because it can turn into a serious problem quickly!

  • I've always been peeing a lot, but I figured it was.just because I'm pregnant...not because I have a uti...

I am happy they caught it early @jennesiso. I do give urine sample at every appointment, but I dont think they culture it to test for infection. They put a little urine stick in it quickly and then (I think) they discard it. Only time they tested for infection was my first appointment at 9weeks. Does all the other Dr.s test for infection every appointment ? Should I ask for this test specifically ?
  • Mine said they'd continue to culture at my appointments since I had one and didn't know it, FWIW. May want to ask at next appointment. I think the dipstick will give them indication if they need to culture- they can tell if things are off and then send it for culture.
  • I have had two now during this pregnancy and have been prescribed Macrobid for it.  I also didn't have any symptoms except for frequent bathroom trips but I also just thought it was normal.  My doctor said that if I get another one, I will be referred to a specialist as to why.  Course now I'm constantly worried and googling the crap out of it!  I just don't want anything to happen to my baby girl!!!!
