High Risk Moms

This is my first high risk pregnancy. I was diagnosed with DVT (blood clot) at 39 weeks of my last pregnancy, so now I'm seeing a high risk OB and they have me on injection blood thinners. One injection a day, which is better than the 2 a day last time around, but I still hate needles, it hurts, I already have bruises, and it just sucks.

Anyone else on a high risk journey? How are you doing and feeling about everything?

Re: High Risk Moms

  • Meeee, unfortunately. I had severe super-imposed preeclampsia (I have chronic hypertension) with my last pregnancy and elevated BP w/ my daughter. My first appt. w/ the maternal-fetal medicine is July 7th.  I'm anxious about everything. I wanted to stay w/ the midwifery office because I feel like their approach to pregnancy is different than a doctors but that's not going to happen.

sorry you have to have the injections daily! That's a bummer. How long will you need to remain on blood thinners (in general)?

  • I'm sorry to hear that.  I'm considered high risk due to my history with hypertension and pre-e as well as my family history with both. My doctor just has me under additional monitoring and warned me that its likely I will need to be induced early again.  I do take lovenox injections daily after I give birth so I am familiar with that, I also find it obnoxious though it certainly helped me get over my aversion to needles!  My sister had to take them daily throughout each of her pregnancies (we have the same blood clotting disorder).

  • I'm high risk by default with identical twins, I have my first MFM consult on 7/5. Pretty bummed to automatically risk out of the amazing new birth center at my hospital  :'( labor in the OR doesn't sound awesome, but it is what it is!

We did ivf to get pregnant- soooo many shots and lumpy bruises! Sorry you have to deal with that while pregnant, definitely not fun!
  • I'm high risk due to having a bicornuate (heart shaped) uterus. This can impede proper growth and cause preterm labor. I'll be monitored more closely with extra ultrasounds.

I was was able to carry my daughter to term with no complications last time so I'm not too worried this time around.

  • I had my first appointment with my MFM at 10 weeks.  It's a different practice where they actually deliver as well.  Very excited to have such a great team!

i had placenta accreta with my living child and have had 5 d&cs and 5 miscarriages
  • I am also considered high risk due to several blood clotting issues. I am on lovonox 2x a day! Ugh! My belly is all bruised and lumpy BUT I think that I finally have a good system down to reduce the lumps and bruises. We also did IVF and then eventually DE FET so I am familiar with daily shots. I am not sure how long I'll be on them but my next appointment with MFM is July 13th so I guess I'll find out then.

  • @EISG918 good luck with your appointment!

Unfortunately I'm stuck with Lovenox daily until I reach 39 weeks, and then 6 weeks after delivery. Last time, my OB allowed me to switch to coumadin a week after delivery to allow me to breastfeed, so hopefully I'll be able to nurse this little one also.

Good luck to all you ladies! Praying for healthy, uneventful pregnancies for all of us.

  • I'm high risk for a few reasons. I had gastric surgery a couple years back, I had a very large uterine septum that was removed but still a very very small bit remains.  Also I had a decent sized subcorionic bleed that I've been told was resolving, but had a few good bleeding/clot episodes. So far so good, I'm almost 11 weeks and I have had any blood for about 4 days. Here's hoping it'll get better!
  • I dislike that so many of us are in the club already. The only perk I enjoy from being high risk is the extra ultrasounds  Otherwise, blood work, peeing in big orange jugs weekly and bed rest (towards the end) suck big time.

hopeful for uneventful pregnancies for all of us!

  • I guess I am in this boat. My last baby was IUGR. I also am of advanced maternal age. My doctor told me today I will need to get some extra ultrasounds and go do a specialist at certain points in my pregnancy. I'm happy for the extra-close monitoring. Last time a lot of indicators were ignored, and it turned into a very scary situation.
  • I haven't been to my first appointment yet, but I know I'll be considered high risk. I had severe pre-e with our son and was induced at 30w4d with him. I've been terrified to get pregnant again after everything that happened with him. Hoping this pregnancy will be a lot easier.

  • @hthollenberger how scary! I had severe preE too but made it to 36w (although admitted/started induction at 35+5). I don't know the odds of getting it again but I'm praying it stays away for you! With DD I just had difficult to control hypertension and my liver function was a smidge off and she was only 10 days early- never Dx w/ preE. Then my sons pregnancy was a complete mess in the second half because of my BP. I hope it doesn't get worse w/ each pregnancy. :(

good luck! Sad you're here but at least we can commiserate together

  • Im sorry for everyone else who is high risk as well. Praying for happy healthy pregnancies for us all.

Im high risk due to health problems. The biggest ones being a form of Tachycardia where my heart rate skyrockets and my blood pressure drops severely, which can be dangerous. I also had a stroke a little over a year ago just before my 24th birthday. I had to take those lovenox injections when I was in the hospital recovering from that. I hated the big bruises they left. Hope they heal quickly for you. I'm also considered high risk because my last pregnancy was a MC at 6w6d.

Again, hopefully we will all have happy healthy pregnancies and if you guys don't mind I will pray for all of you as well.

  • I am considered high risk.  With my second child, I had a placental abruption and my third child had a heart problem.  I am also AMA for this pregnancy.

We went through IVF and are 12 weeks pregnant with identical twins. Luckily I just finished coming off my meds, so no more shots for now!  Our twins look like they are in the same amniotic sac, so tomorrow I will go to a high-risk doctor so they can check for a membrane between them since we haven't seen one yet.  Then they will screen and generally check them out.  I also had a subchoronic hemmorhage over a month ago, which seems to have resolved itself, thank goodness.

Sending prayers to you all! :)

  • Yes, Im considered high risk. I had 2 miscarriages. Once with our first pregnancy at 18w and the 3rd pregnancy was a loss at 15 weeks. Im requesting to see the dr every 2 weeks at next appointment to calm myself a bit. My dr charges a package rate for pregnancy so Im sure Im not the only high risk patient he has.
