Infertility

Rising hGC with cramping, bleeding, and clots (pregnancy mentioned)

I did IUI last month and had my first beta blood test last Thursday.  I was told that my hCG level should be 100 but was only 12 so it was a chemical pregnancy and not "viable".  I had another beta blood test today and the hCG levels have increased to 56 (if they doubled every other day like they are supposed to they would have been 48 today) but I have a lot of bleeding, cramping, and huge blood clots (the size of 2 grapes put together).  They were expecting the levels to go way down so we could continue fertility treatments.  (I'm 36 and we've been seeing a specialist for over a year.)  I have another beta blood test scheduled for this Thursday but I'm going out of my mind.  Has anyone had this happen to them?

Hi there ! I don't have too much insight but just wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through this stress !

I will say that when I experienced a CP my numbers increased and then took awhile to go down . I turned pregnancy tests positive for at least a couple weeks after my bleed .  It was very confusing to me .

Hooefully after your bloodwork later this week you will get some answers .

** pregnancy mentioned ** just thought I would add that bleeding is not always a bad sign too , necessarily . I think your hcg levels and ultrasound are more telling . I had very very heavy red  bleeding with clots the week after I found out I was pregnant and ended up in the ER . All is apparently fine now and I'm in my second tri .  Crazy things happen sometimes as @colleen0517 mentioned !

I'm so sorry if you are in limbo - what's your docs current plan ? Hope you are doing ok !!!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for your responses!  I am going out of my mind!!!!  :(

@mskeenan – Thank you so much!  This is the worst!  My heart clings to any kind of hope but my mind tells me to just let it go so I don’t make myself crazy.  I feel like I could be in this limbo for weeks.  I just want to know what’s going on…either way.

@Colleen0516 – I’m not sure if the bleeding is a miscarriage in process or what.  That’s what I think it going on; it seems obvious that that’s what it would be, but there’s so much information out there and everyone is different, so who knows?  I was thinking I might be be experiencing a blighted ovum and that is why the hGC is going up and I’m bleeding like this.  What happened with you?  After you saw the gestational sac?  If you don’t mind me asking.  J

My full story is that I have PCOS.  I was diagnosed about a year and a half ago.  I’ll be 36 in 2 weeks so we went to a specialist after only 3 months of trying with Clomid.  We’ve been seeing a specialist for a year now.  Prior to this cycle, I had surgery to remove a polyp.  My doctor was really happy with the result and I could see a straight white line when he did the ultrasound to check the follies for this cycle.  This cycle I did Femara for 5 days, then Gonal-f for 4 days, then the trigger, then IUI.  I tested the day before I was supposed to (I was too excited) and got a super faint pint line.  When I tested the next morning the line was darker but not a super big difference.  I had my beta that morning and you know the rest.  I’m happy to give you more info if needed.  I didn’t want to give you too much and overwhelm you.  LOL!  I’ve never had a positive pregnancy test before.  I felt all of the symptoms…tenders breasts, nausea, heartburn, headaches, forgetfulness of super basic information (like my street address and cell number) and all of that is pretty much gone now.  Oh, one other thing I should mention is that my RE wanted to do an ultrasound tomorrow until I told the nurse that I was bleeding with cramping and clots.  Then he said he wanted to do another beta on Thursday and go from there.

  • @Bai-by2016 look at the other thread, I posted my whole story there.

I was so excited when I saw the gestational sac. I took a picture and keep looking at it  but it also made me really nervous because it made it real. I saw the sac, so now I PRAY there is a yolk in it tomorrow when I go again. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

How many days have you been bleeding for?
I got a sonogram 19 days after my IUI. I don't know exactly when I ovulated but I did my trigger on 5/19.

    Here's my timeline:

    Trigger shot: 5/19 (ovidrel)
    IUI: 5/21
    Bleeding 6/1
    Beta 1: 6/2 (HCG 16)
    Beta 2: 6/6 (HCG 83)
Beta 3 & Sonogram: 6/9 (HCG 315- tubes look clear)
Beta 4 & Sonogram: 6/13 (HCG 1804- Gestational Sac in uterus)

Maybe my timeline can help you and see where you are in your cycle.

I have a friend, who has a cousin, who did IUI and started bleeding  She went on to find out she was carrying triplets. She unfortunately then lost one of the babies early on, and carried twins to full term. They think that she miscarried another baby before she saw the triplets... crazy story that gives me hope.

Moral of the story: Bleeding can be a number of things.

I am praying that you see a big, huge yolk tomorrow! Please let me know!!!

I have been bleeding since Sunday at 1:30.  (I’ve been keeping meticulous records of everything that’s happening.)

    Trigger shot: 5/24 with intercourse

    IUI: 5/26

Bleeding: Sunday (6/13) – 1:30pm; brown spotting, very minimal; Monday (starting at 9:30am) through today (6/15) full on bleeding with lots of clots

    Beta 1: 6/9 (HCG 12)

    Beta 2: 6/13 (HCG 56)

    Beta 3: tomorrow

I had a bunch of pregnancy symptoms that have all gone away so I fear the worst.  I thought maybe I was pregnant with twins and lost 1, but I just don’t know.  I will know more tomorrow.  This limbo period is really hard to deal with.  I am hoping the best for you!!!

I had a small scare again last night, I did my Progesterone insert and when I pulled it out, i saw blood. Panic!
Sono today looked good though. She said spotting is normal with the progesterone. I am very irritated down there from it, so she is switching me to injections. No yolk yet, but she said that is normal. The "second ring" (white ring around the Gest. Sac) grew a lot. So she was happy with that.
I have some pain on my left side, she looked and saw nothing. She said my bowel is on that side, and I am constipated (TMI lol) so maybe its just that.

Waiting for my numbers.... Holding my breathe until then. I want them to be high so I can easy my fears.

Hope u get good results today!!

  • @Colleen0516 I am SO thrilled for you!!! That sounds so great!!!! I prayed for you like 10 times today.

@Isthisthereallife Thank you so much! You are so sweet!

I did beta #3 today. My hCG grew from 56 on Monday to 240 today. I am still bleeding. I never stopped. That are talking about a potential (maybe even likely) ectopic pregnancy. I have an ultrasound tomorrow at 10:15 and hope to know more but I have a feeling that it's only going to raise more questions and concerns than it will answer.  I will let you know how it goes.
  • I'm sorry it's so confusing. Don't give up hope just yet! (I have a friend who just had her baby in May and she had what she thought was a full blown period when she was actually pregnant. Confirmed by ultrasound when she thought she missed her "first" period.) And I had so much spotting and bleeding with my first pregnancy - until almost 11w - that I was on progesterone and had u/s every other week from 3w6d to 14w. It wasn't until just over 10 weeks that my high risk OBGYN finally said "I think this is actually going to be a successful pregnancy". FX for good news tomorrow!

  • @Bai-by2016 well your number definitely  doubled which is good! I had the whole eptopic talk too. Thankfully mine wasn't; hopefully yours isn't either.
Did they give you how many weeks you are? If I'm calculating right, I'm figuring 5 weeks. That's when they looked for mine too- I had to be over 200 in hcg. First sono, she saw nothing which was good, tubes looked clear and too early to see it in the uterus. Second sono I saw a sac in the uterus, and third sono I saw a second ring around the sac.
So if they don't see anything today- don't panic, it's okay, it's still early. And I am praying for you that it's not eptopic!

If it's any consolation, I started bleeding again yesterday- Clots and all. So who knows why we bleed?!
I thought I was miscarrying, and then I got my numbers back and they were 4647. I stopped bleeding after about 6 hours. Nurse and doctor said its normal to bleed and that there a million reasons why you could be bleeding.
Naturally, it still scared the hell out of me. I won't know what's really going on til Monday. But for now I'm just trying to stay positive. They took me off progesterone ins
Sooooo just check chugging along! Let me know how your sono goes today!

@adunkin all I want to hear is "successful Pregnancy" so I can breathe again and enjoy this! Hopefully soon

  • I had the u/s today.  I am definitely miscarrying.  My RE didn't seem too worried about the hCG going up and up (which could mean ectopic).  He feels like it will start to go down soon and they are going to monitor it closely.  They did a 4th beta today and I'm praying the number goes down.  They will call me by 5pm today to let me know.  I will have another blood test on Monday.  I'm starting to feel like I live at the RE's office.  LOL!

Honestly, I knew I was miscarrying.  At the beginning I had pregnancy symptoms BIG TIME (nausea, headache, super sore boobs to the point that I couldn't lay down, I threw up in my mouth for about an hour after I ate, I had heartburn, I peed every 5 seconds) so I knew I was preggers.  Even after I bled and had all the clotting, I was clinging to hope.  But this just isn't the one.  This was my first IUI so now I know that I can at least GET pregnant.  My RE said my progesterone was measuring low because of the miscarriage, and that it wasn't that I miscarried because of the low progesterone.  It was basically nature doing it's job.  That doesn't make me cry any less, but the rationale side of my brain understands.  Once my hCG levels are negative we can start trying again.

    @Colleen0516
I'm super excited for you!!!!  And I will keep following you like a little troll.  LOL!  I've shy'd away from these boards for over a year now, and you immediately made me feel welcomed and supported.  So thank you so much for that!  I am so glad to see (on a different thread) that you are enjoying where you are in your pregnancy!  That's exactly what you should be doing.  :)  Enjoy every moment!!!  Who knows, maybe I'll see you in the "First Trimester" boards soon.
  • What did the u/s show that told you, you were miscarrying? It's too early to see an embryo. I'm curious as to what your doctors thought process is.

Wiating to hear what your number is!
You very well may be miscarrying, but if your hcg is rising still- then they really don't know yet.

And you are so welcome! IF is a roller coaster of a journey, so we need each other to get through. I'm glad I could help

  • @Colleen0516
I honestly don't know.  :)  I'm would only be 5 weeks so I don't really understand why an ultrasound would do anything at all.  ???  I don't know if the gestational sac wasn't there or what.  He didn't say anything about it.  (You know how you feel all prepared to ask all of the questions then you totally forget to ask some of the most important ones?)  I'm pretty sure they can see a molar pregnancy on an ultrasound at this point but I'm not sure.  Maybe he was trying to rule that out?  I asked my RE about a possible ectopic and he said he didn't think that was happening but that he wouldn't be able to see it this early but that he wanted to continue to monitor my beta.

Do you think that, because I am still taking the progesterone, that it's confusing my body into thinking I didn't lose the baby?  I read something about how your body can get confused or something.  I've read so much stuff now that it's all getting jumbled up.  Maybe I'm reading too much info.  LOL!

They called with my beta and it's 340 today.  It was 240 yesterday.  They are doing another beta on Monday.
  • I saw a sac in my 5th week....
The orogestrone will keep your body thinking you're pregnant. If he takes you off it and you're not pregnant than you will fully miscarry.

You're bet went up! How many days in between testing?
