Thoughts on our working list of girl names

We are having a terrible time deciding on a girl's name. We have come up with a few possibilities, if you have opinions or even similar style suggestions. Our last name is short with vowel emphasis (think "oboe").  Our son's name is Lucas. We really want to use Ann in some form as it is a family name.

1) Lillian Ann - NN Lily - really love the name Lillian, but not sure it sounds good with Ann. And don't like just Lily Ann for some reason.
2) Penelope Ann - NN Penny
3) Margaret Ann - NN Maggie
4) Anna Katherine - NN Anna Kate - like the sound of this, but Katherine is my name so I'm not sure I like that it seems a little full of myself
5) Anna Claire - no NN - double first name
6) Elizabeth Ann - NN Lizzie
7) Madeline Ann - NN Ellie - don't like NN Maddie though, and afraid people will still call her this

Any thoughts? Constructive criticism is fine.

Re: Thoughts on our working list of girl names

  • You have some very nice options (#2, 3, 4 & 5 are my favorites).  I don't think Lillian Ann works because it's repetitive with -an Ann. I think Elizabeth Ann is kind of boring IMO and Madeline seems overdone, again just IMO. If you don't feel confident about using your name, I'd skip it as an option. Maybe your daughter will bring it back by naming her daughter after you some day! Good luck :)

I like Anna Claire a lot and it's my favorite on your list. I don't mind any of them, I think you have good choices. Margaret Ann is Ann Margaret backwards, not sure if that really matters as they are very classic names, but she is pretty iconic. Personally, I would not call my daughter Ellie as there are seven billion Ellies right now, but I love Madeline. I know you don't like the Maddie nickname and I don't either, but you could just call her Madeline.
  • My favorite is Margaret Ann (Maggie).
  • i like them all except penelope

i like the 2 anna choices best
  • Good list! What about Lilliana nn Lily? Gives you the same sort of name as Lily Ann, but a bit nicer flow.
  • I like Penelope Ann, Margaret Ann and Anna Claire (as first and middle )best.
    Same here! Great list :)

  • If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Anna Katherine, but I really like #3 - 6.  Agree that Lillian Ann is redundant sounding.  I don't really think Penelope or Madeline flow as well as some of your other choices.  Love Anna as a FN.

Also, it's not full of yourself to give your daughter your name as a middle name.  Men name their sons after them all the time and we don't even blink.
  • LOVE Anna Kate (dad's get to use their names all the time...why not moms???)

My second vote would be for Anna Claire - I am a big supporter of double names!

  • 1) Lillian Ann - Too many n sounds together
    2) Penelope Ann - It flows well, but there is something about it that isn't tickling my fancy.
    3) Margaret Ann -My favorite of your choices. It is classic :)
    4) Anna Katherine - Actually this is my favorite but if you worry about sharing names, then maybe not.
    5) Anna Claire - cute, but I don't dig double first names.
    6) Elizabeth Ann - Not bad, but a little too generic for me.
    7) Madeline Ann - Same problem as Lillian

  • I like all your names, but I wouldn't do Ellie as a NN for Madeline. I would either find a name that would logically have Ellie as an NN (Eleanor, Elsa, Elaine, Eloise, etc.) or just nix Madeline. Anna Claire and Elizabeth Ann are by far my favorites on your list. :)
  • Great names. I like Anna Claire the best from your list. I alsowanted to suggest Laurel Ann.

  • On your list, I like Anna Claire and Elizabeth Ann best. The only ones I don't care for are Penelope and Margaret. Margaret has always been harsh sounding to me.

Double first names are quite common where I live, and I love them. Here are some other similar suggestions:

Shelby Ann (used as a double name)
Elizabeth Ann (with nn Anna Liz)
Anna Jane (nn Janie or Annie)
    Everly Ann (nn Evie)
    Charlotte Ann
