Infertility

Hi - I'm new here

Hi everyone-
I've been browsing the boards for a while now but wanted to introduce myself.  My husband and I have been TTC for about 2 years.  We had our first visit at the fertility clinic in February.  He had 2 SA's that came back with .5 mil sperm (motility was 34% and no results on morphology), so he was referred to a urologist.  In the meantime, I was told my thyroid levels were high and put on medication for that.

My husband had another SA done with the urologist in April.  We didn't see the report and were told it was "about the same," so the doctor started him on Clomid a few weeks ago.  The doctor told us that while the sperm count was low, it was significantly better than NO sperm and he seemed to think the Clomid would help us out.  The urologist seemed very positive during each appointment, which in turn made us feel positive.

Last week I met with my RE again and found out I have PCOS, so I am starting medication for that.  My RE had a letter from the urologist saying my husband's count was .06, so we are confirming this since we were told it was about the same...she thinks it is possible this was a typo and his count was .6.  I was also told that IVF/ICSI is our only option.  I wasn't surprised to hear that, but was surprised to hear her say the chances of Clomid helping my husband were "slim" and while we can give it 3 months and do another SA, we should start discussing whether we would like to use donor sperm or adopt.

The last few days have been a lot to process and I've spent a lot of time reading the discussions here.  Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences here...I'm hoping they will be a source of comfort and inspiration as we move forward with waiting to see if the Clomid works and discussing other options.

  • welcome. my DH had a similar situation and from what i gather clomid can only help if his hormone levels are off causing a decrease in sperm.  For my DHs case he was put on clomid for no reason as his levels were fine.  we had a second opinion who said the same thing some is much better than no sperm.  we just did our first round of ivf and we just had to make sure that he froze a decent sample as a back up for the day of.  it cost us $350 but its good insurance to save from a failed ivf cycle.

  • Welcome! Sorry you're here and FX your stay is short.

As for your specific situation, there are probably some conversations that need to be had. BUT it's also good to remember that fertility doctors get people pregnant - usually the quickest way possible, which also happens to be the options you listed in your specific case. Unless you're worried about your age or some other factor, there's time to play around with options and wait and see what, if any, changes Clomid makes. Good luck!

  • Hey there and welcome!  I'm surprised your RE mentioned donor sperm and/or adoption like that so quickly.  Sounds kind of insensitive actually.  Your DH's sperm is certainly usable for IVF.  Even in some cases of zero sperm count they can surgically remove a few in order to be able to do IVF.  There is so much hope that it frustrates me hearing what your RE told you!  Please don't lose hope! :)
