Can't Believe I'm Asking This lol

Does anybody have any recommendations for a mild, daily laxative that is approved for pregnancy? I haven't asked my doc yet bc I don't see them until next week and I need one NOW lol  :D Thanks in advance!

Re: Can't Believe I'm Asking This lol

  • Prune juice! That's what was recommended to me as a first step by my OBGYN last pregnancy. Just make sure you're not out anywhere you can't get to the bathroom  :#

  • Colace. I was taking it once a day when I was on zofran. I also at one point used a fleet enema when it got real bad. Now I'm having a smoothie every morning with a lot of spinach and that seems to be helping a ton. Good luck!
  • I use a few things - I top my protein shakes with chia seeds which are seeming to do the trick.  I also use pure aloe concentrate and fiber rich foods like strawberries and grapes and I drink a gallon of water everyday.  Also, keep in mind, too much fiber or a sharp increase of fiber will have the undesired effect....
  • I'm in the same boat...though I'm about ready for heavier duty laxatives today (it's been a week since I had a decent poop!) . Currently I'm taking Colace, drinking coffee once a day (use to be a sure fire cure for me), eating prunes, upping my fiber & water and drinking coconut water (because someone told me it works). I'm asking my OB today for any other recommendations...I'll come back later!

My family uses dried apricot, they place dried apricots into drinking water in a small cup and wait for few hours until they are fluffy and eat them. I think they drink the water as well.
  • Colace is the bomb. I used it every day for the last half of my last two pregnancies until two months post pardum. some say it is hard to wean off of, but I had no problems.  I take two pills at bed time.

  • You know... the first like 6ish weeks of my pregnancy I ate carrots like it was my job. That and corn.. and I was pooping like multiple times a day. You could try those too!
  • Nothing worked for me until I started drinking coffee after a 3 month hiatus.

  • I've found having an apple and/or apple juice every day helps. It's not perfect, but tastes better (to me) than prunes!
  • I was using Benefibre for a while until I started having strawberry or mixed berry smoothies with Greek yogurt. That and Raisin Bran. They work better than the Benefibre or any other foods I've tried.

Colace! But don't make the same mistake as me. I didn't know and accidentally bought PERI-Colace which has a stimulant in it. Cramps like NO OTHER! Hahaa So like the urge was there but nothing was budging! Painful. I took two once a day for a few days before I had a normal BM. I was told to stop taking them once things got regular again and to eat more fruits and veggies. I still take them occasionally so things don't get bad again.

If you need relief now, I used Fleet Enema. Its awkward and uncomfortable but it works in under 5 minutes. I've read to not use them later in pregnancy but my doctor gave me the OK. You can call your Dr and ask just to be sure before waiting until your next appointment. Good Luck!!

Thanks for all the advice! Since it's not super bad right now, I think I'll try to up my fiber intake and see if that helps. If not then I will try some of these  ;)
  • As others said, Colace is good. It's a stool softener, not a laxative, which is a bit more gentle and won't create dependence like many laxatives do.

Also lots of fiber, fluids, and moving around.

  • OB gave the thumbs up to Miralax and said I could also use senna (sparingly) and Metamucil as long as I reallllly increased my water intake.

  • I'm not sure if your prenatal vitamins have iron in them or not but the best thing that helped me was switching to gummies that don't have iron. As long as your getting enough in your diet (which, vegetarian or meat eater, you most likely are), you really don't need it and too much can make you feel blah and constipated.

That's not necessarily true.  I started on iron prenatals, then switched to gummies for a week because they were rough on my stomach.  When I mentioned it to my ob, she said she wanted me on the ones with iron specifically because of the extra blood volume and what our bodies are going through.

    Nov16 Siggy Challenge:

  • Bran muffins and Activia yogurt every day. And drink a LOT of water (bonus, the water helps keep your feet from swelling too badly). You need the water to help balance out the fiber, but the two work together.

I make my own muffins (cheaper and taste better) the lazy way by buying the Quaker muffin mix. Half a pkg makes a dozen muffins. Also add in chopped dates.
  • Naked juice has been working wonders for me. I drink a cup of the green machine everyday .
  • Coffee, fiber, and colace. In that order. Last time I took fiber one to help things out.

  • UTAmbs11 oh weird, it was my ob who actually recommended the gummies without iron early on and said as long as my iron levels weren't low, it wasn't necessary. It sounds like it just depends on each woman's levels and brings up a good point that any advice should be discussed with one's doctor.
  • @Katemr1146 That's hilarious!!  :D
