oxybenzone

My wife and I had put on sunscreen with that has oxybenzone in it. Afterwards I read up on it and it says it links to low birth weight for female infants. One time use of it shouldn't be too much of a problem right? We won't be using products that has oxybenzone until she gives birth. Hope someone can give me an advise on this.

Re: oxybenzone

  • I doubt one time will make a difference.
    Married - 4/7/07
    Son #1- 2/15/08
    Son #2- 8/18/10

  • A single application won't strongly effect your child's birth weight. I would be extremely surprised if it effected kiddo at all. I am sure your darling Little One is gonna be fine. :)
  • Thank you both. I really appreciate the response. Glad to see these comments :)
  • Checked in with my Mamma (who is a nurse). She said you should be fine with minimal use. She did add "unless she drinks it," so please don't use the sunscreen as a beverage (ha, my silly Mamma).

When looking at the research, it was women with high levels of oxybenzone that had the low birth rate. ACOG (American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecologists) didn't have any bulletins on the stuff, so it was interesting finding information on the dangers. Being wary is good, but I wouldn't sweat the "did it once" bit.

Hope it helps, and glad you feel better!
  • There is little to no scientific evidence supporting this theory.  If you have concerns though you should talk to your doctor.
