Breast refusal at night only! !

Hi mamas!

My baby boy is now 7.5 months old and for the last 5 nights is refusing to nurse during the night at all!
He wakes through the night but won't nurse,  just cries.
If i try to offer him the boob he gets hysterical!

Is/has anyone else had this problem? ? Not sure what to do.

The only thing i can think to do is to go in before his waking  (pretty much same time nightly) and nurse him while he's asleep

Or maybe he just isn't hungry at night now and just wants comforting? ?!! I don't know.

Im definitely giving baby plenty of nursing and solids  during the day now,  so I'm not sure if this is why he's just not wanting to nurse at night.

Sigh.

Re: Breast refusal at night only! !

  • Is there a possibility he is teething? And maybe waking up from teething pain?

When my daughter wakes up from teething pain I will give her some teething tablets and try to feed her for comfort .. Most the time she will only drink one ounce or half an ounce before she falls back asleep.  She's not very interested in eating at night either.

Sorry you're going through this mama I know how frustrating it can be!

I went through this and we never did solve the problem she just wouldn't nurse, I had to give her a bottle and eventfully it affected my supply at night and I couldn't offer her anything. I believe it was due to a slow letdown and she wanted it instantly at night. Good luck hope it works out better for you then it did me!

My son basically started doing the same thing while he was teething at 6 months and we now nurse during the day but he takes an 8oz bottle at night. He sleeps better, 6:45pm till 7/7:30 am so I'm ok with that. I think he hates that my let down is slower at night. I just pump after he goes to bed and now have 96oz stored in the freezer. I've also found that milkmaid tea helps keep up my supply as well. I drink 2-3 cups a day if I feel I'm losing some flow. I actually brewed a good batch the other night and have it as ice tea during the hot days recently.

My son has just been through the same. A week after he started refusing at night, a tooth popped through!

My son started doing that  a month ago with teething. He still fights at night, so he gets his one formula feed before bed. No biggie. I think he gets frustrated with a slow letdown. In order to keep my supply up, I drink Milkmaid tea during the day and do a pumping session after he goes to bed. My supply is still waning a little bit, but I'm keeping up as long as I can. But if I have to switch to formula eventually, no biggie. I am stock piling the pumped at night milk and he made it 8 months breastfeeding. Do what's best for baby and for your sanity!

EDIT: I thought you meant a night feeding before bed! If he's 8mths, he may just be full to sleep through the night. My DS was sleeping through the night at 5mths even though we were still nursing, but I had added 2 solid food purees, one for breakfast and one for dinner. He had a good feed before bed and now sleeps 13 hour stretches at night. Don't worry about it. As long as he's eating about 20-26oz and gaining weight, don't force the feed at night. When LO does get up, I just give him back his paci and pat his butt to sleep.
  • Could it be that he's not hungry, just seeking comfort/reassurance? My LO stopped eating during the night a couple of months ago, but sometimes needs a pacifier or to be held for a couple minutes during the night.
