STMs - Rock n Play

The RnP was a lifesaver with DS. They didn't have the "auto rock" option then. Anyone thinking of updating to this option, or does anyone already have?  There doesn't seem to be a ton of color/pattern options unless I'm missing something. There also seems to be a huge price difference between different models. Any insight?
Side note - They also did not have the adorable giraffe & zebra with DS!

Re: STMs - Rock n Play

  • Good question--I was wondering the same thing.  We used the RNP as our daughter's bassinet and it was the best thing ever.

  • My DS slept in the rnp until he was four months.  The one we had was similar to this one

While it didn't have the auto rock feature, it does have a removable vibrator that I place on his crib to help with the transition.

  • I think I'm going to try to stick to our old one. If DD2 really wants to be rocked a ton and I'm getting annoyed with it, I'll then consider ordering one of the new ones on Amazon. But DS wasn't a big fan of being rocked in a contraption...he would sleep in the RnP but if he woke up he fussed until we picked him up, (manual) rocking did nothing for him.
  • Ours didn't have the rock feature, but it does vibrate which seemed to be all the movement my first two needed to get lulled to sleep, so we will be sticking with our old one again. Love that thing and can't say enough good things about it!
  • I have the basic one, no rocking or vibrating but it still worked wonders with DS2. I don't plan to upgrade because it really wasn't too much of a struggle to rock a little bit when he would stir.

When do they sleep in their crib?
That's a decision up to parents. We room-in for quite a while - at least 6 months. DS was in-room with us for 9 months. He started in his RnP and then moved to the bassinet portion of his PnP before moving to his crib in the nursery down the hall.

  • My friend IRL told me her pediatrician said the rock n plays with the pillows are dangerous and are being discontinued. My friends son almost suffocated in one when his arm got caught under the pillow or something. She told me to just get the one with out the pillow. They are cheaper too.
  • I didn't have a RNP last time (shocker, I know!) but I loved our vibrating bouncy chair. I scored a basic RNP for this baby and I'm excited to use it, but if LO needs constant movement, I'll use the swing:

  • I was at my friend's house who just had a baby and she had the auto rocking one.  It looked nice! I probably won't buy it but hoping she'll let me borrow
  • I have an older version of the RNP and I think I'll just stick with that because it worked fine for my eldest and I am poor and cheap.

I know a lot of people use RNPs as a bassinet, but even the ones without pillows aren't cleared by most pediatricians for nighttime sleep.
