Jaundice Anyone?

Baby Tristan came home Tuesday with an added accessory of a bili blanket.  We have now been back to the hospital everyday for blood draws to check his levels.  Today he was up to 19.1.  Supposedly the levels peak at day five post birth.  I think I will completely lose it if he has a higher level tomorrow.

Anyone have experience dealing with a jaundice baby? Feeling like a failure here

Re: Jaundice Anyone?

  • We went through it this week too. I also felt like a failure.  Sunday at discharge she was 5.1. Monday at dr was 16.3.  We did bili blanket at home and the next day dropped to 11-Blanket was DC'ed Tuesday evening.  Yesterday she was still at 11 but dr said they could rebound then drop again. Hang in there! I don't have much advice but know you're not alone!!

  • My son had jaundice. The best advice I got from our NICU dr was to just breastfeed through it (if you are BF of course). He said the more they eat the moor they poop it out. It's literally nothing you can control so why feel like a failure for it? There is plenty of time for you to feel like a failure at mothering later down the road.... Don't start now with stuff that's out of your control

  • Yes, Liesl is jaundiced due to a blood incompatibility which is more serious than common jaundice. She spent 4 days in the hospital and 1 day under the lights. We have a recheck on Monday, and we're praying her levels stay down. The doc said to bf a ton to help her pass it out of her system faster.

  • Yes it sounds like feeding is the key.  I have been breast feeding and supplementing with breast milk from a bottle.  Level went up today by just a half point so it seems the be leveling off...fx.  Pediatrician wants me to start adding in formula for some of his supplemental feedings... Supposedly should help him pooh and pee more?? We have also parked him in front of our big living room window.
  • My Sam had jaundice. My milk didn't come in and when we went to his first check up he had lost 15 ounces. I was told to continue trying to bf and supplement with formula. We also had a bili blanket sent to our home and he spent about 24 hours on it. Luckily his numbers dropped, he has gained back 5.5 oz and he is just fine now. But it was scary. And I felt awful because even though I had thought I was feeding him, I actually wasn't.
  • DD had jaundice (3 weeks old now). We had to take a bili-bed home with us and she had to stay under it for 48 hours other than to nurse or change diaper. Her number never went above 16 and I was told that it was time to start supplementing formula to help flush her out. It definitely helped because she started pooping and peeling more and the poop was mucusy, which they told me was the jaundice washing out.
prayers that your baby's numbers go down!

  • We went through it too. After birth he was a 5 and had low probability of jaundice. ( I was so happy since my first son had it.)However, at his 3 day check up after birth he jumped to a 17 and we were admitted to the hospital. He and I had to stay 2 days with him at the hospital while he did the light therapy. I had to nurse him and supplement formula until his levels decreased under 12.
  • I'm so sorry. When we had our first son he had jaundice and we had to leave him in the hospital over night and until that night it was the hardest thing I ever had to do! But now I realize I got off easy. Please don't feel like a failure! It's not your fault!
