choking paranoia?!

hello mommies,
our babies are now in that stage where they want to experience all types of textures and foods. my thing is I've become so paranoid about choking since it happened twice already. I've become so paranoid about that I'm kind of scared to feed him sometimes.

anyways I feel kind of stupid asking this but every time I Google I can't seem to get a clear answer on what a one year old child is supposed to be eating. if you ladies would like to share your child's favorite snack or meal that would be awesome.

Ugh I know, the fear of choking scares me to no end!! I am diligent about cutting his food up into smaller pieces than should be I'm sure. But we feed him pretty much whatever we are eating. But I feel like during the day I am running out of ideas so I'm interested to hear what you are all feeding him. Here is what we typically feed him:
Breakfast foods - Egg with slice of american cheese, waffle with some maple syrup drizzled, string cheese, yogurt, cut up fruit (he's not a huge fan but we try), oatmeal
Snacks - those yum teething waffers, waffle (if he doesn't have it for breakfast), toast with peanut butter, yogurt, puffs, crackers, veggies
Lunch - leftovers from dinner, chicken tenders, mac n cheese, veggies (sliced up carrots, avocado, green beans, sweet potatoes)
Dinner - whatever we are having.
He doesn't seem to be a fan of juice so it's just water and milk at this point.

  • yes I also run out of ideas as well. do u cut the green beans or let him eat them in whole. I want to try giving green beans but my paranoia gets the best of me.
  • oh I see sliced up. sorry
  • I give whole green beans LO does great they are pretty soft. I have done a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and also a grilled cheese.
  • My LO eats everything you could possibly think of. I found this article yesterday and found it really helpful b/c I felt like her food choices had become boring.

  • when you give him sandwiches, what size do you give it to your LO. is it bite Size pieces or little pinches. lol
  • When I give sandwiches I cut them into nickle sized (? Or close) pieces, maybe a little bigger. My LO does a iOS job of chewing and biting her food though.
  • thanks this helps a lot. today I gave my son cheerios and he did awesome job eating them. I can't believe I waited this long to give them to him. and he really liked them
  • I was also really worried about choking. My ped made me feel better when he told me that their gums are very strong and no foods are off limits at this age but just make sure they are cut up.
breakfast: any fruit, waffles, pb toast, cereal, yogurt, French toast sticks, cinnamon rolls, eggs and toast,
lunch and dinner always consist of a fruit, veggie and protein for us. The girls love tilapia and tacos!
Snacks we do fruits, fruit snacks, graham crackers, goldfish, cereal, cereal bars, applesauce, and teddy grahams.
my girls sometimes put too much of something in their mouth but typically are able to spit it out or wash it down with a drink. Oh yeah we do milk at meal time and water the rest of the day.
  • LO is very good at chewing but does occasionally shove to much in his mouth so I mostly limit how many bite size pieces I give him.
  • My son eats just about anything. We just tried watermelon last night and he loved it! Just gave him a full piece/triangle and he went to town. It was mushy enough that we didn't have to worry about choking and I think he felt good about himself to be holding this giant piece of food! Haha other wise we do things like ravioli, Mac and cheese, lightly toasted toast with just a bit of pb, avocados, any kind of fruit he loves, veggies, etc.
  • My son still is on home made purees. He just doesn't want bigger pieces of food. He gags a lot when I try feeding him. He is 1 already and I feel he is so behind eating wise. Anyone else on this same boat?

@beemaya83 my LO was "behind" too and would constantly gag and throw up anything I gave him that wasn't puréed. But one day, around 11 months, he woke up and stopped gagging. It was so weird! Nothing bothered him anymore and now he won't even touch the puréed stuff. He will get there too! Just keep offering it and don't force it.
  • I was nervous about choking too but The twins hardly ever gag or choke anymore- things like steak or tougher meats I just make sure are cut into small pieces.

My kids eat everything, breakfast is usually overnight oats or a banana and an almond meal muffin or hard boiled egg.  Lunch is typically some kind of fish or edamame beans or meat with vegetables and fruit for dessert and something like yogurt or a little bit of a brownie or something sweet and dinner is typically the same idea as lunch but usually with some type of grain. I give them Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast with peanut butter as a snack on most days or I steam apples for a few mins until they are kinda soft and they really like those.  I try to limit processed foods and sugar and salt- but they totally had Wendy's chicken nuggets the other day and devoured them.  I really like the website babyfoode.com- They have a lot of inspiring and easy recipes for 1 year olds.

It's funny your girls loved Wendy's chicken nuggets because after the girls bday party we were starving and there was no food left so DH ran to Wendy's and the girls had the nuggets and were literally screaming for more shoving them in their mouth. DH and I were cracking up!
  • Thanks for all the good ideas!  I feel like I get in a rut, too.
My LO pretty much eats anything and sometimes gags, but she always has gotten it out or down....I think a lot of it is their little muscles and sphincters strengthening and learning new things.  My first DD did the same thing.
She also goes back and forth on liking/not
liking different textures and foods, sheesh.
