Tuna

My doctor said it was ok in moderation, and the internet has varying opinions. It's really the only fish I even go near - very very rarely would I sometimes eat shrimp.
I'm just curious, what are your opinions on Tuna Safety and Consumption?

Re: Tuna

  • I'd agree with your doctor-personally I'd have it in moderation, maybe once a week or so.

  • I love tuna but I've had to cut back to eating it twice a week.

I agree, it's best in moderation.

  • Have you tried any other whitefish? Depending on the time of year, Turbot is extremely mild, and so is whiting.

Of course, I have not checked these for mercury levels yet, so... I might also be unhappy next time I go fish shopping.

  • I've just never really been a fish person. Occasionally tuna salad sounds good, but yesterday definitely Baby H wanted tuna for lunch. It was to the point that I ended up going to the store to get tuna because I just didn't want anything else. I guess that's really Craving #1.
  • I try to get specifically canned skipjack (because it tends to be lowest mercury) and go by the 12oz/week recommendation. 12oz of canned tuna a week is ~4 meals for me, which is more than I think I've ever eaten.

I ate it once a week when pg with my son and will probably do the same this time.

  • I just had some for lunch! I highly recommend the Safe Catch brand, it's the lowest mercury of any canned tuna on the market.
