I was just curious - I've been reading the Careers post, and it looks like I'm the only SAHM that posted there (although, to be fair, I understand that being a SAHM isn't exactly a "career"). So I was just wondering if there are any others out there like myself?

I mostly am I only work weekends, when my husband watches DS. So the rest of the week I am home with him, I plan on taking at least 6 months off of work after baby is born.

I consider being a SAHM to be my career too! But once all the kiddos are in school all day (so, kindergarten/1st grade age), I'll be a children's librarian

DD was born 8 weeks before I graduated with my MLIS.

I am! I was a teacher and tried both public and private before deciding to be a SAHM. I LOVE it, I fully planned on going back, but my entire check would have been day care. I knew my pay was pitiful, but when we realized that we decided i could be home!

I stay home with my 2.5 year old and 10 month old! They keep me pretty busy. I didn't reply to the career thread only because some of the questions weren't really applicable to my situation. I was an engineer in a previous life before I had children.

I'm a stay at home mom, I have a 16 yr old, 7 & 5 yr old. With last baby on the way. I wasn't able to stay at home until my second marriage so just with the last 2 kids as babies. I will probably go back to work after everyone is in school at least part time. It would be nearly impossible to work with kids and my husband schedule because it would all be on me.

Right now, I teach two nights a week, but I'm home with my daughter all day. When this baby comes, I'll be staying home for a few years.

I am jealous of SAHM. But the main reason i work is i have amazing health insurance. My husband is offered health insurance obviously but mine is great. My 401k is great too. Also the benefits i get for starting kids college funds ( saving act gains interest). It just doesn't make sense for me to not work as much as i would love to be home. Plus i have the most flexibility you could ask for. If there is a day that doesn't work for me i can trade it for a different day as long as there is openings which their always is. I xan be like...oh tuesday i can't find child care I'll work friday instead.

Over here!! I went from working full time to part time after DS was born and SAHM in March. I'll probably get a part time job after this one is a year or so. DH is in the military so I have the luxury of choosing to stay home.

DH and I made the decision when I was pregnant with dd that I wouldn't be returning to work after she was born. I'm very grateful that he's so supportive - I've definitely found my true calling. I know some moms say they couldn't do it because they need adult interaction, which is important! And it's totally possible to maintain adult interaction and be a SAHM. In the beginning of my SAHM career, I became very, very lonely because I was cooped up at home all day with dd. It doesn't help that I'm a HUGE GIANT introvert and am very reserved. But I forced myself to get out there because the loneliness and boredom was making me depressed. Now I'm active at church, am part of a baby boot camp group that meets 3-4 days per week, and we're part of a local home schooling co-op. Now I'm not lacking in interaction at all, and it's complete night and day difference.

I agree with a lot of what you said @jlea05 . I am a sahm to my almost 1 year old (on the 17th!) and almost 2yr old (on July 2) DD's, and when I stopped teaching kindergarten when our first was born, I was so lonely and didn't know what to do with myself! It's what I always wanted to do, and I couldn't believe I was having such a hard time, especially since the baby didn't do anything. When our second was born it was a night and day difference, and I've become much more involved outside our home, once I overcame the fear of going out with two babies! I am very involved in our church, jazzercise, and getting out to shop at Aldi or have play dates

It is definitely a hard career, but I wouldn't change these moments for anything. I am blessed.

I stay at home with my 3 year old and 1 year old. I went back to work for a few months after our first was born (my SIL was able to watch her part time while I telecommuted two days a week and DH was on second shift). When it came time for daycare though (summer ended and SIL is in PhD program) I couldn't bring myself to leave DD at daycare so I quit. I would've had to for financial reasons after our second anyway so we figured we needed to survive on one income either then or in less than two years.

Me! It took a lot of time before I stopped saying "oh I JUST stay home" when people asked what I do. I love it, but there are days I miss the structure of having work. Our oldest is just shy of 1 so I'm hoping as she gets older and we transition into 2 kids I can build my own schedule and structure. Any tips?

I've been a SAHM for 2 years. I have a 3 year old and almost 2 year old (21 months). Pregnant again possibly with twins. I love it. There are days I'm super frustrated, especially rainy one when the kids are going nuts (like today) But it's great!

This is the website where I found the preschool curriculum. Keep in mind, it's not an accredited program or anything, and (not sure of your beliefs) but it is very Catholic, haha! But I've heard that it's great and serves as a good jumping off point into pre-k. When our kids do start "official" school, we'll be using Seton, which is a fully accredited private Catholic home based school. They start at pre-k. That address is www.setonhome.org

@jlea05 I am Catholic so the program would be great for us. We have several family friends who home school around here but DS is still young so we haven't gotten too much into the specifics yet. The preschool curriculum sounds like a great jumping off point for us. Thank you!

Not planning to home school and DD only just turned 1 but this looks like a great way to casually prepare her at home for preschool in a few years, especially if we end up doing Catholic school, which is an idea I've really been warming up to. I have been a stay at home mom for almost 5 years now. It is very rewarding to be able to be home with my two kids. It's even nicer being able to be home with them while pregnant with #3. While our days do sometimes get boring, and we get a bit of cabin fever, we try to keep busy with lots of activities.

I'm LOVING being a sahm while pregnant with this baby. I worked up until a week (or two? don't remember now) before dd was born, and it was horrible having to work while pregnant, I wasn't even nearly as sick that time as I am this time. I have no idea how ladies who do work, manage to do so while suffering ms.

We had a very hard time conceiving, so when we decided to try IVF I "retired". It has been so hard. My previous job was kind of a big deal, I had a lot of responsibility and it also made a large impact on the community. Though it is extremely nice not living with the high level of stress my career brought, there are a lot of days that I feel entirely useless. Once this baby comes I am sure it will change, but until then, I'm trying very hard to stay sane. On the bright side, my house has never been cleaner!

@vssbrm Those are completely valid feelings! Remember though that raising a human being is a massively huge deal, and (I think) the most important work a person can do. And while society may not give much credence to it, being a mom is a big deal and massively impacts society, because one day the child you raised will be released into the world.

@vssbrm You are so very welcome! And another thing is...and this isn't meant to sound cruel at all...but when it comes to careers, ANYONE is replaceable. Someone else can always be found to do that job just as well as you. But being a mom? No one could ever replace you, nor do even a fraction of how well you can as a mama to your child. It's a massive responsibility that we are SO blessed to be given. It's thankless and exhausting, and like I said, our society and culture places very little value on it. But take a look at what our society does value, and you'll see how skewed it is. We're responsible for raising the next generation of people who will keep society going...that's massive!
Whew! I get so passionate about this! Sorry about that!

I will be when baby comes

we currently have a photography studio downtown and our lease is up in April. I think I'm gonna move my office home and we are going to find a smaller studio space and be by appt only.
