Fibroid

At my sono today they saw a possible fibroid.  It is anterior and my placenta is posterior.  My doctor says it isn't anything to worry about, but of course I feel the need to know everything and anything about fibroids during pregnancy.  Anyone ever have one during pregnancy?  Anything you want to share about it?

Re: Fibroid

  • I have not personally had one but hear they are fairly common. They usually grow during pregnancy due to increase of hormones. I hope everything goes well for you and that you are not in a lot of pain!

  • I am in the same boat. The sonogram technician spotted one at my last appointment, but my actual doc wasn't there that day for me to talk to. The nurse said they are benign and not to worry, but that I should look into having it removed at some point after the baby because it could cause pain at some point.
  • I actually have a uterine fibroid that I knew about while I went through IUI treatment. Mine is about the size of a softball. My obgyn and the fetal specialist I'm seeing both say it's a watch and wait situation. They were both surprised I was able to get pregnant with it there. The most common complication I'm told is pain that will cause me to be hospitalized and due to the size(it's still growing) the baby may not be able to turn for a vaginal delivery and I could most likely expect to have a c-section. However I'm told that best case scenario is that it never causes any problem at all and everything goes exactly as if the fibroid is not there. I can say so far my only complication is that at 18 weeks I look like I'm carring 2 babies instead of 1. I'm very thankful and hopeful that this is the only symptom I have.  Best of luck to you!
  • I thanks for responding.  I hope those that have fibroids do not have any complications.
  • I'm hoping to revive this thread after my last appointment. Anyone else having fibroid issues arise now that we're getting close?

My fibroid has grown to 7cm and is right in front (I can feel it). Yesterday my doctor told me that it could cause some complications -- 1) it could restrict blood flow to the baby, and 2) I also have anterior placenta, so my placenta could grow right into the fibroid, and then not detach like it normally would after the baby is delivered, and 3) For some reason this puts me at risk for a huge blood loss, and I could require a transfusion. Regarding the baby's growth, she will monitor that by doing growth scans every other appointment from here on out. Baby is in the 75th percentile now, so there's no sign of any problem so far. But with the placenta issue, if that happens to me I'd have to have a procedure after the birth, similar to a D&C, to remove the placenta. And possibly have a blood transfusion. So that's not fun, and sadly, one of my first thoughts is the cost of these procedures. Of course you have to do what you have to do, but my insurance company has really screwed me with this pregnancy, and we're not very close to our deductible yet, so we'll be shelling out some cash for all of this. Also it would be a bummer to have to go have a procedure right after the birth instead of cuddling with my baby.

I asked if either they could remove the fibroid during that placenta procedure, or if it's possible to opt for a C-section and have the fibroid removed at the same time. She said no. I was pretty disappointed. I'll have to have another surgery sometime down the road once my uterus has gone back to its normal size.

I know my issues are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, but it is a little scary to be discussing complications.
  • @Snaps816 I will keep you and baby in my thoughts and prayers! Fingers crossed for a good outcome.
  • @snaps816 praying for you and the LO as well!

  • Lurker from September Moms. I have a Uterine Fibroid currently the size of an Iphone 6. It keeps growing but I go for ultra sounds every few weeks for monitoring. I am lucky with how this baby implanted, she is pretty far away from it. My Dr has said a lot of the same things all of yours have

    • Expect pain from the fibroid that could land me in the hospital. (I have felt the pain twice so far at 27+2 days. It is pretty horrible. Knocked me off my feet and I couldn't breathe.
    • I may need blood transfusions. If My body experiences contractions and the fibroid takes the brunt of that it could bleed. If they do a C-section and touch it some how and they cant control the bleeding they will have to take my uterus. This is worst case.
    • I will most likely have pre-term labor. At my last appointment he said I was on the 10 week countdown. He is banking me going into labor before August 10 (36 weeks)
    • Weight gain and belly size. I look farther along then I should. It also adds to the weight gain and after I have the baby I will still look a little pregnant as the fibroid is so big.
    • I have to get mine removed. I asked all the same questions, could I have it out at the time of birth etc etc. No. I have to go back 3 months after I have the baby and get it removed. Which comes with a lot of risk like losing my uterus if bleeding cant be stopped.
    • I am 6 times more likely to need a C-section.
The only thing Im not 100% on that I need to ask at my next appointment is if I am able to have a vaginal birth, will contractions hurt more then normal. If you have felt the fibroid pain they talk about I cant imagine contractions being worse then that. But to have to deal with fibroid pain caused by contractions and contractions themselves at the same time I might not make it.

  • @AshleyB09042015 Wow, that is a lot to think about! I hope you get the best possible outcomes on all of the issues you listed. Where is your fibroid positioned? I only ask because my doctor never mentioned some of those risks. Mine is right on the outside wall, a few inches below my belly button. When I first felt it there, I thought it was the baby's head. I have not felt any pain from it, yet.

It sounds like your doctor is really on top of this and monitoring all of the possible risks. I hope it all goes well for you!
  • @Snaps816 Mine is on the inside of my uterus to the far right upper side. My OB specializes in this area. He works mostly with patients that have Fibroids, Endometriosis etc. Im really lucky that I live in Canada and all of this is covered. I would never be able to afford all this otherwise. I think I have had at least 12 ultrasounds and I have another one in July. He is just very thorough and I really appreciate that. He answers all of my questions and doesn't sugar coat any of the risks that come along with having a fibroid.

  • I was diagnosed with one during my infertility workup last summer. My RE ended up helping me get pregnant but it has not been mentioned to me since I have been pregnant! I guess it isn't causing any issues.

  • I ended up not having a fibroid, so I am no help.  Thinking of you ladies, though.

I'm still being monotored closely. The fibroid is very large and inside of my uterus. The only major complication I've had is that my baby is breech and will most likely not be able to turn for delivery. My Dr. keeps  saying the fibroid is there and we can't change it so we can only watch and wait.
