Midwives/Doctors suggested WHAT?

I am 5 days out from my RCS and I have been in Prodromal labor for 8 days now with absolutely no dilation even with the contractions being about 5-12 minutes apart all day and night... I really can't  sleep for more than an hour at a time... if Im lucky...

I just had my last prenatal appointment today and my midwife and RN suggested I a) take 2 benadryl at night or b) drink a glass of wine before bed!

Has anyone else ever had your doc/nurse suggest something you thought was a huge no no?

Re: Midwives/Doctors suggested WHAT?

  • A number of my friends have had midwives or OBs who have given the green light to the occasional glass of wine near the end of pregnancy if they feel it will help the mother relax. It sounds like your midwife thinks the lack of sleep is more harmful to you than a glass of wine would be. You must be pretty exhausted! I'm sorry.

  • Mine suggested a small glass of wine, with cheese and fruit while taking a bath. It helped to relax all the muscles so I could rest.

I would try benadryl or unisom/Tylenol PM first though.

  • Benadryl is perfectly safe during pregnancy, especially this far along. As PP said, you being so tired and uncomfortable is a bigger issue than taking the medication.

Take a Benadryl or Unisom and try to get some rest!

  • Literally all of my nurse friends and doctor friends have said drink some wine.
  • Wine with cheese and fruit in the bath sounds like heaven right now. Personally, I'd go for the wine rather than the Unisom/Benadryl, but it wouldn't be worth the horrible reflux I'd have to deal with, especially if I went to bed right afterward.

I personally think a glass of wine is way safer than certain meds haha. Baby is pretty much cooked at this point, you'll be fine!

  • You must really need some rest. Hope it works!

  • Turns out that while a 3oz glass of wine did make me sleepy, it also gave me a horrible case of heartburn that kept me up so I will not be repeating the experiance!
  • Pretty much what everyone else has said, once you're this close to labor a small glass of wine won't do much other than help you rest and relax.  I do sometimes take a Benadryl before bed just because it does help me sleep and allergy season has been so brutal this year it's a two birds/one stone situation.
  • Ask about Gravol. That can help you sleep as well.

Wine in the tub sounds amazing. I have a bottle of red put aside in case I get those instructions.

Good luck!! I'm sure you're super tired.

I had a sip of my husband's wine the other night and didn't even get through saying "that's soooo good!" before I was fighting back painful acid burps. The worst!

I had a few sips of wine last night and had the same thing happen. It was worth it though, the wine was deeeelicious.
  • I got the same advice yesterday. I was also told to take magnesium to help sleep. My midwife said I needed the sleep and relaxing would help with starting  labor.

Probably. The midwife told me beer, especially a dark stout, is good for your milk supply.
