Waxing, poss TMI

I like to keep things groomed down unda, not shaved, just groomed, trimmed and neat. DH prefers this as well. Well the other day I realized I had not trimmed in a few weeks and asked DH if it made a difference to him.... he looked super uncomfortable and was like "it's a little 70's babe..." sure enough... not my style.
I have only ever gotten waxed once in my life, and I made the mistake of getting a full Brazilian and it was awful, and she did an absolutely shit job; left clumps of wax in places that was a PIA to get out and painful. But when I went to trim the other night, it took me, no joke, at least an hour because I couldn't see around the bump!!! So this has me seriously considering getting waxes from here on out until the end of pregnancy, because I can't deal with having an fro down below.

Does anyone who regularly waxes, or even just waxes for pregnancy, have any recommendations? I don't even know how to shop around for a waxer. Do I do a bikini over a brazilian? Or should I just try and become comfortable with Bobb Ross if you know what I'm sayin?

  • I'd recommend trying a bikini line wax at european wax center, they use a different kind of wax (they don't use the paper strips to pull it off).  I don't think the bikini line hurts so you could try that then maybe increase to a full bikini.

  • I had laser hair removal years ago to create a landing strip/french bikini, so maintenance has been easier. Neither DH or I personally like the full brazilian (as much for the grow out and the ouch of getting it done), so I generally go for the french bikini. As for shopping around, it might take experiencing a few places to find somewhere/someone you want to go back to.

  • Are you against having H trim it for the short time you have left? I'm going to do that, he already offered haha
  • I would find a waxing studio, look into the reviews before you book. Waxing is a bit more painful during pregnancy at least for me. I used to only do it before vacation but know i'm on a 6 wk schedule. Or you could look into sugar waxing.
  • @yellowrose314 oh lord. That was too much.
  • @yellowrose314 bahahahha I see! If by chance, the person waxing you finds Lady Ravenclaw's diadem, please send it my way!!!

I waxed pretty regularly pre-pregnancy. Since being pregnant, I have only been once in the first trimester (my next appointment is this Saturday because I am anti-shaving & I can't see anything enough to trim).

I wouldn't let one bad experience keep you from it. Ask some friends if they have any recommendations, and if they don't try checking online.

Ah, I'm considering waxing too now... I have always shaved and really have no problem with it, but being pregnant the hair grows back in SO FAST and my skin gets irritated if I have to shave that often. I've always been terrified of waxing down there but I guess it's time to bite the bullet! I'm sure H will be pleased as well.
  • The only recommendation I got last pregnancy was to not wax if it's not your usual because everything is more sensitive.

I don't wax. I let DH know that if he wants the pleasure of the prepregnancy landscaping that he will have to help. But really I just sat in my whirlpool tub seat and went to town. The parts that I really need an awkward position if shave by feel and if necessary I'd bring in a portable mirror.

  • I would say no to waxing. I got sugared regularly pre-pregnancy (better for your skin and I promise it's less painful that waxing). I went twice during this pregnancy and almost died, SO much more painful and sensitive and I am pretty seasoned. If you do go, make sure you are hydrated, no caffeine, and maybe pop a ES Tylenol before. I have tons of friends who went throughout pregnancy, but not for me.

If DH won't help (our hubs sound similar in this area), I recommend a large handheld mirror and a small personal trimmer. After 3-4 times I've gotten pretty good at this, even without being able to see anything directly.

  • I second the european wax center if you want to go into waxing. Much less painful and the ladies who do the waxing are real pros. Personally, I don't think a traditional bikini line wax accomplishes much since it only touches stray hairs that stick out of the underwear, so if you go for a wax, I'd either suck it up and go Brazilian or do a landing strip.

I'm too terrified to try waxing so I've been using the trimstyle razor and keep the safety guard on, so I can clean it up blindly (normally I take the safety guard off to get it really short). It's not as short and neat as I prefer, and since I can't see my bits it ends up a little, er rough, looking, but it gets the job done!
  • I do the Brazilians at a sugaring studio - it is a really neat process where they use a ball of warm sugar and honey instead of wax...I don't know how it works but it does! It supposedly doesn't hurt as much as wax but I can tell you that the first time is SOOOO painful! Gets better after that! More tender during pregnancy though...I usually go every 4 weeks but have been procrastinating this time because it HURTS! Definitely hydrate. And even after all that complaining it is totally worth it in my opinion!  Feels so clean and nice and lasts for several weeks.

I get Brazilians pretty frequently and prefer that over anything. I've had sugaring and waxing--I find waxing takes less time and sugaring can get clumpy.

The pain truly depends on who is waxing. I've had one lady who was seasoned, but in a rush, and it was SO painful. Then I had a new girl who took her time and it barely hurt. I'd say the pain is similar to getting your eyebrows waxed--it hurts for a second and then goes away.

If you're really worried, ask your OB/GYN for an emla cream prescription (if it's safe during pregnancy...I'm not sure). Put it on one hour before the wax, let it sit, then wipe it off right before your wax. You'll be totally numb. However, the cream does awaken your nerves or something because the heat from the wax is very intense...but the waxing itself does not hurt.
  • @yellowrose314 I seriously died laughing!  OMG!  I personally have never done waxing in that area because I'm a giant chickenshit but I do shave.  I haven't done it in like 2 weeks and definitely missed spots.  I already told DH that he can suck it up and help me out and fortunately he didn't put up a fight.

  • I also recommend European Wax Center. They do an awesome job and you're out of there in approximately 7 minutes…for a brazailian! Take a tylenol before you go and that will help a little with the sensitivity you may have. Good luck!
  • I live in Canada, we don't have European Wax Center here unfortunately, at least not anywhere close to where I live.

  • Waxing is painful- And I hear especially when pregnant. I've been kind of nervous about putting the baby through the stress hormones  and pain of me getting it done. I'd only do it if YOU really want to. The things your husband will see during birth and postpartum are nothing compared to this-- and maybe opens the door to a good conversation about the way our bodies change after we have babies.

  • I died laughing at y'alls conversation, if you find Ravenclaws Diadem in there please let the HP world know! I also second that hubby should suck it up because there are going to be MUCH grosser things he will probably have to help you with after birth. Childbirth destroys all mystery, trust me.
  • Oh trust me y'all, he knows how ridiculous he's being. The crazy thing to me is that I can tell him all the gross things I see at work and he thinks it's awesome, but mention downstairs grooming and he gets squeamish. Men are babies.

  • @yellowrose314 You're convo recap was hilarious. I read it to my DH and we both had a good giggle. :) I started getting Brazilians last year and have continued to get them every 5 weeks. Yes, they say it does hurt a little more when pregnant since the blood is closer to the skin. For me, it is worth it because the pain doesn't last long at all. I found my wax studio by doing a search on Yelp. I highly recommend doing that and avoiding places with bad reviews. Look for the one with the best and call ASAP. Since it is June, they are most likely going to be booking pretty far in advance so you want to get on the schedule now (summer = bathing suit season and people like to be hairless :) ). And trust me, you want a good place that is hard to get an appointment for. Now back to the pain, my waxer puts pressure on the area right after she pulls the wax strip off it and it immediately removes any pain I just had when she pulled the hair out. You want someone who is considerate like that. She also recommends putting a topical lydocain solution on your pubic area before coming in to numb it but I haven't gone that route yet. The pain is not horrible to me and I try to tell myself I need to toughen up for labor anyways. ;) But if I were to use the lydocain, I would def ask my OBGYN first if he thinks it is safe. Good luck with whatever you do and I say, yay for waxing! :)

ugh this topic currently makes me cringe. I used a dull razor down there the other day and the bumps are unreal and super painful. i don't know if I can stomach a Brazilian, but I may try. Last pregnancy I was a pro at doing the "Stevie Wonder", but this time around I feel like I'm using a Fisher Price razor set.
  • I'm an Esthetician and I do many brazilians at my job. I can say it's very popular among pregnant women because it is hard to see and it lasts so long. It's something that will definitely hurt the first time and get easier and the hair will come back much finer. If you decide to stick with it the hair will eventually disappear down there.

Its worth a try! I've never had anyone not come back after they've tried it!

  • Last time and this time I just use a razor for the bikini area with a trimmer on the other end to keep the rest very short. So far I can still see around the bump if I contort, but as time goes on I'll get a little mirror out and continue to do the same in the shower.

  • @RedMar that happens to me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It's so freaking frustrating. Especially since I plan to pool hop all summer!

Ladies who are using the trimmers- any recommendations on a good one? I was thinking I'd try that before I try to be brave for a wax. Never tried waxing- but I don't want to look like a wildebeest this summer. That, or I'm going to have to try to ask DH to help a girl out. I have a feeling he will think it's weird.

  • The best part about waxing is NO bumps! :) Just be sure to use an exfoliating cloth as they should instruct you to do but I used to get razor burn and not any more!

SarahDarah333 I'm very pleased with this one. Caution to anyone - be safe without the guard on! I cut myself before I really figured out what I was doing...

heyheyklee I am SO jealous of people who say their hair disappears after a while. I've done sugaring religiously every 6-8 weeks for the past couple of years, and yes it's finer but I definitely still have hair. Any tips?

  • I actually just use the trimmers that are on the opposite end of the disposable razors.. I think it's a Venus or something similar that comes with a battery operated trimmer on the opposite side.

While pregnant I ALWAYS leave the guard on now. I took it off last time for a super close shave and knicked myself... it took weeks to heal with all of the added bloodflow.
