What Baby/Maternity Books are You Reading?

I just finished Expecting Better by Emily Oster and I liked it but I think it may be time to dive into some more serious baby/development/delivery books. Any suggestions on books you found helpful?

Re: What Baby/Maternity Books are You Reading?

  • I'm currently reading sibling rivalry books, but when I was pregnant with DD I loved Penny Simkin's writing style (Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn). I also found The Nursing Mother's Companion extremely helpful, and the Happiest Baby on the Block. Note that the Happiest Baby is a very repetitive book (there's a DVD that covers all the important parts that's great to watch with your partner once baby has arrived).

For more narrative books, I enjoyed Bringing Up Bebe and How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm: And Other Adventures in Parenting.

  • Digging deep into the baby bargains book to help with figuring out all the damn options!

  • I just read Ina May's guide to childbirth. I think it's worth reading especially if you're considering nonmedicated labor, but there are parts of it that are very biased or otherwise pissed me off. Still, I'll reread parts of it when I get freaked out about labor.

I think Baby Bargains is a must-have as well. I haven't looked into baby development stuff yet though so I'll be watching for suggestions on those.

I'm reading the Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy. It's pretty straightforward.
  • I just have the What to Expect when you are Expecting.  So far its pretty straight forward.

  • Breastfeeding made simple. Apparently breastfeeding is more than just putting your baby's mouth up to your nipple. Very informative, although a little crunchy.
  • A friend dropped off some books about food in the first year which I'm looking forward to skimming through. I'm over reading about pregnancy, I've been doing it since day 1 and I am out of new material!!
