I can't believe my baby...

I thought it would be fun to share things that have SURPRISED us about our little ones. Things they've done, ways they're changing, what has been a complete shock to you about motherhood?

  • I'm surprised by how loud she can fart (gets that from daddy)

How alert she is. I thought newborn stage was about sleeping and eating, but nope, not with her. When she's awake, she's awake! And she's awake a lot.

How she's learned to communicate so quickly. She has the normal cries, fusses, coos, smiles, and then she has this FAKE cry that she uses ONLY when she's displeased that we aren't holding her. It's really funny.

How quickly she can bust out of a swaddle (blankets and velcro pods)

Yes! My son makes me laugh when he victoriously raises a fist in the air that he's just pulled out of a swaddle. I thought swaddles were good for at least the first few months!
  • How unbelievably squirmy he is!! He absolutely loves to kick and stretch his legs. During tummy time, within minutes he is at least 45 degrees or more around from where he started. I have to keep moving his tummy time toys and mirror to keep up haha.

  • I've been surprised:

    - That even though he was born so tiny, he's outgrown so much at 7 weeks. I thought I would have more time with the newborn sizes but he is wearing 3 months and stretched out of the baby bassinet in the PNP.

    - What sounds he can completely ignore vs what startles him. All 3 dogs can bark like they're being tortured and he'll just keep sleeping, but if I drop my hairbrush he's freaking out?

    - His interest in eating me all the time! I pump and supplement, and have only breastfed a few times, but he is constantly opening his mouth and trying to eat my nose, arm, shoulder, cheeks... He doesn't do this to anybody else. I wonder if he remembers breastfeeding or if it's just that I give him his bottle, so he sees me as a source of food in general. But every time I pick him up... Nom nom nom nom.
I feel your pain, my LO is wearing carters 6 month pjs!! What gives!!

  • I am surprised at how independent he is. He'll scoot himself across a space if you put him on his belly and then get upset because he's not moving like he wants to.
Tries to hold his head up and sit up all on his lonesome.
And will try and all on you if you help him stand up. And gets upset that he can only tale a few steps at a time.
That he's gotten so good at mimicking what you do. Talk directly to him and in a minutes hell soy there and look at you and grunt til he's said his fill and then luck his tongue at you and make it a game.

DS1 was in 12mos clothing at 4 months. They all grow at a different pace.

  • How big he's gotten! He's 7 weeks and he's 15 lbs 7oz and 24 inches long! He fits 6 mo clothing very well and very soon will be needing 9 month clothes!

How he's such a good sleeper at night. While he's not sleeping through the night, he wakes up religiously from 1:30ish and around 4 am and he usually goes to sleep about 11.

How he has relatively good head control at this age. My 2 year old at the same point still had a wobbly head.

What really amazes me is how at night he can scoot on his back from the top of his crib to the bottom.

Despite all his gas problems and congestion, he still manages to give me a smile when i talk to him.
Also, he loves to be on the ground or in his own space. He does not want to be held too much. No siree.
And he already recognizes his mother's voice and face. My mother in law is so amazed and proud of her grandson.

  • Im amazed at how fast he is developing. It seems like overnight he went from a sleepy newborn to babbling, smiling and rolling around (on his sides, cant quite make it all the way to his tummy just yet). He also loves to stand up and likes to jump. He will be 10 weeks old tomorrow.
