Chewing on hands

So DD has been chewing her hands for the longest time and just recently she has been making herself gag. She extends her fingers while her hand is in her mouth and starts to gag. Well today she actually made herself throw up twice. I want her to be able to chew her hands, but how do I make her stop gagging herself?

Re: Chewing on hands

  • Mine does this too. Since I know he can't actually swallow his fingers and that the worst that will happen is the gagging/spitting up, I have just figured he will learn eventually not to put them in so far. It hasn't happened yet, though, so I'll be curious to see if there are any suggestions.

  • It is important developmentally as it prepares them for eating solids without choking. I know it looks uncomfortable but she has to learn what gagging means!

  • Mine does this too. I figure it's something she'll learn to stop doing
  • Mine does it too! Other sources say it will pass!
  • Thanks ladies! As a FTM, I was worried that she could seriously hurt herself. I didn't realize it was developmental. I'll just wait for it to pass :)

  • My daughter does the same thing. If she just nursed & I don't want to see all that breastmilk go to waste then I pull her fingers out her mouth if I see her pushing them too far back in her throat.
  • Mines been doing the gag/ spit up routine on his hands for at least a month now... Apparently he's a slow learner on this one  :p
  • My son does the very same. Especially while strapped in his car seat! But as mentioned above, it's developmental and necessary as baby's body prepares for solid food! I just keep several changes of clothes on hand at all times!

  • My gal does the same! Hasn't made herself puke but she gags herself all the time. Seems to be super normal at this age! :)
  • Yep! Normal! And just to add... a baby's gag reflex is further up in their mouths than ours are so their fingers might not even be that far in! Just a fun fact.
  • Mine does this too. Yesterday she started trying to pinch her tongue. Babies are funny.
