False Negative Blood Test?

Hello!
So I'm looking for some input....my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half now. We tried Clomid for 3 months and that did not work so we went to a fertility Dr. who upped the Clomid dosage and I had my first IUI 3 weeks ago (May 20th). I was scheduled for a blood test 2 weeks later (June 3rd) to test whether or not I was pregnant. Of course, like most of us I'm sure, I just couldn't wait until that day and I took a HPT 4 days prior. That one came back negative. I tested again 2 days later(also 2 days prior to my blood test) and got positive in the morning and in the evening. I tested the next morning and the following morning which was the morning of my blood test. Both positive. I went for my blood test a couple of hours after testing and they called that afternoon saying it was negative. Normally, I would just think a blood test is pretty definitive over a HPT however, I tested again this afternoon and got a positive. This is day 31 of my cycle. Has anyone else experienced this or know of someone who has? Is is possible to get a false negative blood test??

  • I thought TTGP gave you pretty good info. Call your dr and talk to them. Let them tell you what's going on

  • Did you trigger for your IUI?
  • @BecauseBabyIamAPug  No trigger. Just clomid. (I'm actually unfamiliar with what a 'trigger' is though I have seen that term used all over).
  • It's a shot with synthetic HCG hormones to force your body to ovulate, aka 'trigger ovulation '.
It will cause a false positive HPT until it's out of your system.

Also, your IUI was may 20th? That would be considered ovulation date. Which makes you 4 weeks 3 days pregnant  (if you are truly pregnant ).
If I were yoi, I would call your RE for more testing. There was either a lab error, or you are not pregnant and your progesterone is still high and you need to be given something to force your period.
  • @BecauseBabyIamAPug  ahh, I got it. Yes, it was May 20th. I used an ovulation kit and got a positive on May 19th so IUI was the next day. Does Clomid effect progesterone levels? I was planning on waiting until CD 35 and then if no changes, I'll call my Dr.
  • Indirectly. Clomid can cause cysts.  A retained cyst can cause an increase in progesterone,  which would prevent your period to start (this is a good thing during pregnancy ).

Also, your Dr should not be relying on OPK'vs with clomid.  Many studies have shown that clomid cam and does give false positive OPk. They should bee checking lab work and US to confirm follicle count, size and uterine lining.
If your RE is not doing this, run. You have a 6 time lifetime max use of clomid.

  • @BecauseBabyIamAPug  I did have an US however, it was about a week early because we were going to be out of town, though I don't really think that matters. I did also have a blood test to confirm ovulation but that was a week after the IUI which I did not understand. Anyway, that came back 'excellent' as the nurse said. This will have been my 4th month using clomid. First month using it at 100mg.
  • I'm also having a lot of symptoms but I think those could just be from the clomid. Either way, I'll call my Dr. and I'll know in a few days. I'm just very anxious and so tired of this up and down emotional roller coaster. Thanks for your help!
