Infertility

Male infertility and varicocele surgery

My hubby and I have been trying to conceive for 15 months now, three months ago we weere finally sent to the fertility specialist. I found out I have hashimotos (on top of lupus) which has my thyroid out of wack and my husband barely has any sperm, they found a small varicocele which they think may have an impact on his sperm. So next week he is having surgery to get ti removed. My question is...who else has gone through this? How long before you knew if the surgery was sucessful? Did it help with sperm count? How long did it take him to recover?

We were given the option to do a surgery, but our team of doctors were not very confident that it would bring any significant changes. From them and what I have read it is very controversial as to whether or not it is successful for increasing fertility. We opted to try 4 IUIs and when they were not successful we moved right to IVF. Btwn the V and my minimal issues this was the best option for us. We are also a little older so we did not want to wait longer to see if it would work, we had ticked off too many years already at that point. Good luck! Let us know how it goes, I am always curious to hear if the surgery works!

  • My DH had his varicoceles taken care of and it didn't impact his sperm count that much.  Between my endo and his sperm count we had little chance even after his surgery and him taking vitamins and everything.  We had to do IVF.

  • Do they know why his sperm count was low? How low was it? The urologist also has him on Clomid to "push the boys to work as hard as we can make them"
  • We opted out of it too. They said there was no guarantee it would do anything for his MFI and it didn't hurt him so there was no reason to do it. They said it would take 6-9 months to know if it worked and we just didn't want to wait that long.
