NBR: military women/families

My brothers step daughter is leaving for boot camp for the Navy on Tuesday. Today is here going away party. What is the protocol on gifts here? I got her a "good luck" card, but I know going into boot camp she won't be able to bring much if anything. Would love some input. I was thinking some envelopes and stamps but do they still write home from boot camp? (I don't know I've never had any one close to me in the military) and would she even be able to take them in. Thanks!

My ex enlisted when our son was a year old so all my knowing of boot camp is from 2008.

When going to boot camp she can't take anything with her. They'll mail everything home after they arrive. It would be better to mail her things once you get her address. A card for the party is a great idea. But as for once she is there she'll love pictures of home. As far as I'm aware they used envelopes and paper from there. Stamps probably wouldn't be a bad idea. You can't really mail them much in boot camp since they don't have "free time."

Eta-you cannot mail them money in boot camp either. I mailed my ex a money order (cash wasn't allowed) and he couldn't cash it.

  • Yeah I figured she wouldn't have much free time. We aren't really that close so I doubt I'll be in contact with her once she gets there. I guess I'll just stick with the card, thanks for the input :)
  • You're welcome :-)
