Odd colored discharge

I'm freaking out right now because I just noticed some odd colored discharge when I wiped. And I say "odd", because it's not exactly red, but it's not brown either. It's more of a mix between yellow and brown I guess. Very mild, on and off cramping but that's been happening the last 1.5 weeks so that's nothing new.

I'm just nervous because this is how things went during my first and only pregnancy that ended in MC two months ago. And around the same time, too. I'm 5w5d and my last MC happened at 6w2d. I've read in so many places that funky discharge is relatively common due to the hormones but I can't help but associate it with a bad outcome!!! I know there's really nothing I can do except wait it out at this point, but it would be nice to hear some others' stories to hopefully put my mind at ease until then.

Re: Odd colored discharge

  • I wouldn't freak out unless it's red or your cramps get worse (or the discharge smells bad, which would be a sign of infection). What you're describing sounds pretty normal but you should still call your OB just in case. In early pregnancy, your body is producing discharge for a number of reasons, so it's not unheard of to have different types of discharge mixing together and creating different shades of it.

I had a few days of brown discharge around 5 weeks while also having the normal pregnancy leukorrhea (which I still have, and it varies from clear some days to offwhite/light yellow other days depending on what I've had to eat). I remember mixed together it looked kind of beige-ish or tan. I of course freaked out and called the doctor immediately... I can't remember when it stopped, but it did eventually. Also have heard stories on other BMBs of people having spotting all through the first trimester. Just take a deep breath and call your OB :)

I've been getting it too, just try to stay calm and talk to your OB. Mine said that if it persists trough the weekend then she would do an ultrasound next week. Just be honest with how your feeling and are worried and they should be able to help talk through your worries. Or do an ultrasound at 6+ weeks to ease your worries. Feel free to join in the PGAL check in thread too. It might help to talk to more ladies who jave gone through it too.

  • Totally call your OB. Maybe they can get you in for an early scan for peace of mind. What you are describing sounds within the range of normal, but no harm in checking.
  • Thanks ladies. I left a message for them and expect to be hearing from them soon. In the meantime just trying to wait it out and hope that the color doesn't turn to red!!! It's not gushing out or anything (gross I know), it's only when I wipe. So I guess that's good.
  • I wouldn't freak out just yet.. I bled weeks 5-7 (never enough to be more than when I wiped, sorry if TMI). And it went from brown, to pink, to red, and back.... I had a bruise from where the baby implanted. I haven't bled he last week and a half and baby is perfect. Hope this helps ease your mind a little

I would personally try to see your doctor. Not to be the person who comes in to scare you, but I've had two experiences with spotting. *TW - loss* The first was with my first pregnancy, in which I had the tiniest bit of pink spotting, followed by several days of brown/beige/yellow discharge. It turned out that I had a blighted ovum and the pregnancy was non-viable. I have also been having spotting this pregnancy, after sex, after my pap/ultrasounds. At my last check up with the most recent spotting episode, we had an u/s and everything looked great. The doc believes my current spotting is from a friable cervix. FX it's nothing serious, but I would definitely try to get seen for an u/s if you can.

  • They are going to start by drawing HCG and progesterone labs. They didn't seem overly concerned right now. Results will be back soon. @cjs260--sorry for your first loss. Glad this one is working out better! Just goes to show that every pregnancy is different and the same symptom in two different pregnancies could mean totally different things!

@Horse232 For sure! Spotting can happen for so, so many different reasons, and I like to go see my Dr just to make sure! That sounds like a great start to me! Let us know how it goes. I'll be thinking of you today!

Well the results must not have come in today so I have to wait till tomorrow :-/. But the discharge is now back to normal with no color at all so that has me at ease...for now at least. Lol.
  • It's so comforting to know we are going through the same things and that we have this board.

I started spotting a light brown discharge this evening. We did have sex this morning and I don't know if that had anything to do with the spotting. I saw that @cjs260 you had the same thing happen a couple days back.

I also have these strange mild cramps that I wouldn't even call cramps but more like a squishing of my lower abdomen.

I'm really trying not to panic. Everywhere I have read it says that it could be the placenta or stretching. It's too late for implantation blood since I'm 7weeks 5days.

And my u/s app is on 06.03 which feels like an eternity away.
  • Hoping you get comforting news today, @horse232

They called and said all my levels look good. Progesterone is 17.7 and HCG is 1,759! So now I just need to be patient and wait until my first u/s on 6/14 so I can have even more peace of mind. That seems like forever away!!!
  • Great news! Fx for an absolutely amazing scan
  • Add me to the brown/yellow discharge club! My u/s tomorrow can not come soon enough!!! No matter how many times I go through this, it's always nerve wrecking!

  • Hoping for a good scan for you tomorrow!! I went to my OB today re: the discharge and she didn't seem concerned. She checked me out and said everything looked ok down there. I still have 12 days until I go for my first ultrasound and that can't come soon enough!! Let us know how your u/s goes tomorrow!

@horse232 glad you had good news, fingers crossed for the scan.
@mommyWesley hoping your scan goes well
@nini422 thinking of you and hoping you get a good scan
  • @nini422 FX for you! I know it's scary, but just remember: brown discharge is old blood not new and a lot of women have it so there's a good chance things are fine :)
  • Scan was great today! Baby was measuring about 5days behind with a HB of 142!! New EDD of 1/17 based on u/s not sure if the OB will really move my date though
