Thoughtful/Unique baby gifts

After our baby was born, my sister-in-law brought me a very thoughtful basket when she came to visit us in the hospital. It was filled with tons of goodies such as organic nipple butter, mother's milk tea, granola bars, trail mix, organic chap stick, etc etc.
Another thoughtful friend bought us a framed and matted picture of the sunrise on the shoreline the morning that our baby was born.

My sister-in-law is having her own baby in November and I'm struggling to think of something thoughtful and unique to give to her and the baby.

Did anyone get anything they thougth was super thoughtful or unique?
Thanks in advance for the suggestions!!

  • I think the most thoughtful helpful thing that was done for me was a week a worth of meals that we could heat up when we first arrived home..not technically a gift but so helpful

  • There's a cool site called putmeinthestory.com where they can add baby's picture and name and dedication to some classic stories, there's a cute one called on the night you were born , I bought some for my daughter , I think it's a nice keepsake for the future , there's also stuff like a blanket where u can write baby's name and birth date as a keepsake , also v helpful but more practical to me was  breastfeeding pillow (had a emergency C section so was a lifesaver in feeding) and a diaper genie !
  • Is she planning on breastfeeding? I made myself a breastfeeding basket that I could easily move from bedside to the sofa. Drinks, cereal bars, nipple shields and pads, mobile charger, muslins, nipple cream, kindle etc.

It's similar to what she did for you but on a theme?

The picture is an amazing gift!

The most unique baby gift I received was a baby bonnet with the baby handkerchief bonnet poem (made me cry). There are several different variations of the poem, so you can pick your favorite and place it in with the bonnet.

Do you know the poem, "Babies Don't Keep?"
It makes me weepy every time I read it. You can get needlepoint/cross stitch versions on Etsy, or possibly find a nice framed print of it?
Birdie's nursery is Anne of Green Gables themed, and my sister got me several framed prints for the walls. I love them, and they'll transition to a "big girl room," since the Anne books are for middle readers.

  • All the ideas above are better than this but we received a plush blanket from pottery barn with the baby's name and also some cute stuff from Etsy with our college football team and the baby's name.  I love the idea of doing a basket with all the things that you found most useful yourself - for me that would be my baby bjorn bouncer, my babyspa noise machine for on the go ($10), organic raw coconut oil for my nipples, the can't wait to show you belly book and a very light weight zip up sweatshirt for baby.
  • Not something I received but my girlfriend just had a shower and I put together a gift of all of my favorite baby things that I hadn't thought of until after like glow in the dark soothers, my favorite baby cloths, sleepers and receiving blankets and a duplicate of my LO's favorite toys and the same lotion we used in our bedtime routine that smells so good.
Another friend of mine made an 'emergency' or MOTN kit with all the baby meds you might need like Tylenol and gripe water and gas drops.

  • My cousin received an outfit for every holiday through out the year. I thought it was a cute idea. You can't beat the sunrise one but what if bay is born at night a moon shot would be better.
  • One of my friends gave me a "birth basket" with all the little things you don't think of bringing to the hospital. It had things like tissues, lotion, comfy non-slip socks, and Chapstick in it. She also gave me an after birth care kit which included the ingredients for padsicles. Not the most glamorous gift, but definitely one of the most appreciated!

I know someone that got the front pages of all the major newspapers for the day of their babies birth.  I thought that was kind of cool.
  • If you are crafty I think anything handmade is always quite thoughtful.  I learned how many talented knitters I know since having a baby.  We have received quite a collection of handknit cardigans, hats and booties.  It almost makes me want to try ! Anything personalized for baby is also very sweet: eg embroidered bag or onesie, engraved spoon, etc.  several people suggested a personalized blanket.  I received an adorable one which came from "mother goosh" I highly recommend it.
Another idea I read somewhere and thought very nice was the gift a of a photo session: either pregnancy photo shoot or newborn/family shoot, perhaps picking a photographer that can do either so the recipient can choose which she wants.

My mom saved the paper from the day I was born. We read it recently and it was so cool! So much has changed -- especially the cost of groceries in the flyers! We wanted to do the same thing for LO but we're so wrapped up in everything that we completelt forgot. Oops! This would be the peffect gift for someone.
  • Theres a lot of cute ideas on etsy if you don't mine waiting a few weeks for it. Someone gave me a onesie that had all her birth info embroidered on it. Its so nice! She didnt wear it in fear of spit up or poop staining it but i put it on her for a picture. It was so nice and a nice keepsake for her to have. I plan to get one for my sister in law and brother now that they have had their baby
