Re: Bumpie of the Week 6.1 - unicornsthecat

  • ME?! I feel like I just won a prize and I NEVER win anything! Woo!

What is your first name? Justine

When is your due date? December 8 (yay early Christmas present!)

What part of the world are you from (be as vague/specific as you want)? Northern Florida, but I'm from Wisconsin and I miss the midwest pretty terribly despite the snow. We may move back eventually.

What number baby/pregnancy is this for you? Baby #1

What is your occupation or dream occupation? After I finished my master's, I began teaching at a local college. I'm ABD right now and the goal is to finish my dissertation before baby comes. But I'm pretty disenchanted with academia as of late and my dream occupation is to have a home/food blog (I know, I know...big dreams haha).

Does your/will your nursery have a theme or color combination? I haven't started working on the nursery yet, but I'm thinking like a star/moon theme would be nice with colors like blue and silver. I love star-gazing and the night sky is relaxing to me, so hopefully that will rub off on baby! We will convert our spare bedroom into the nursery--right now it's an office for DH so he's going to have to find a new spot eventually!

Have you bought anything for baby yet? I feel bad that I haven't really bought anything for baby yet, besides a bunch of food to satisfy baby's cravings...not mine, definitely baby's  I'm about to invest in a Snoogle and also some maternity pants/tops and maybe some other clothes. I've been basically living in one dress right now because nothing else is fitting and that has to stop.

If you have bought things, what is your favorite thing that you have gotten so far? Since I haven't really bought anything yet, I'll go with the changing table my sister handed down to me. It's really nice and I might paint it later if I'm feeling crafty.

What is your favorite part of pregnancy so far? Seeing my little blump grow into what maybe can pass as a little bump now? I also like touching my belly and imagining baby in there wiggling around saying "Hi mom!" I'm looking forward to elastic waistbands and comfy clothes, too.

Do you have a favorite maternity/baby brand? I love looking at Pea in the Pod clothes, but I can't justify spending that much money on maternity clothes   I'll probably stick with Old Navy, Target, and Kohl's.

One thing you will splurge on this pregnancy? Thinking about a home doppler for fun, but will definitely splurge on that Snoogle.

What are your top pregnancy related priorities? Keeping baby healthy and trying to keep active. I like hiking and kayaking and I want to try to keep that up as long as I can.

What is your favorite book? I can't pick just one because I enjoy reading a lot. In fact, that's how DH met me--at school in the library by myself reading a book (haha antisocial nerd alert!). I love all books by Gillian Flynn (particularly Sharp Objects). I also think Wally Lamb is a fantastic writer and just finished We are Water and loved it.

What is your favorite tv show? Game of Thrones is awesome. I also like The Americans. Really wish American Horror Story would hurry up and come back.

What is your favorite movie? Hmm...can't think of just one favorite right now. I like thrillers like The Others.

What is your favorite band/singer? Thanks to my sister (who's 17 years older than me) I'm really into early-mid 90s club/techno songs. Favorite right now is "Be My Lover" by La Bouche. It always puts me in a good mood and DH likes to imitate my awful dance moves which provides me with endless entertainment.

Anything else you would like us to know? I have two dogs and two cats and I talk to them frequently when I'm at home alone because nobody else is here to keep me company. They're great conversationalists.

  • I am going to have "Be My Lover" stuck in my head all day now. That's a "skating rink song" for me...certain 90s songs just remind me of being at the skating rink. *la da da dee da da da da*

  • Very nice to meet you. I too talk to my dog while I work, since DH is away at work it's just me and the pup. He's a great listener. When he's not sleeping that is. He sleeps a lot. It makes me question my conversation skills.

@LinziLoo09 Ph.D in Sociology. I like what I study (sociology of aging and mental health) but I've become burnt out and "the plan" my dissertation chair is pushing me towards isn't what I want. But I have yet to tell her that because I don't want to feel her disappointment. Oh and I haven't told her I'm pregnant, either. *sigh* On the bright side, teaching can be fun when the kids aren't being a bunch of whiny brats

@phoenix870509 My pets frequently fall asleep mid-conversation unless I include the magic words "treat" or "walk" in there.

@slartybartfast I will have to check that Pandora station out! Sounds awesome

ETA: Part of post got eaten. Wanted to congratulate LinziLoo09 again on her diss. defense! My inspiration to get this shit done.

  • Oooh we should talk @unicornsthecat! I specialize in aging and public health and have published in mental health before. Great field! Always nice to see another gerontologist out there! Oh and I had my first baby while working on my dissertation, so it's totally possible and probably the best time to do it in academia. That said, I totally get having a different plan than what they push in school. I'm doing a clinical/research hybrid fellowship before making a decision of what to do next. I'd prefer something not entirely dependent upon grant funding though...fat chance.

That's awesome @LinziLoo09 Gerontology is cool! And I hear you on the grant funding! It's also reassuring to know this is probably the best time to have a baby, even though I'm panicking in my head thinking "how in the world am I going to get this all done?!"

I love Wally Lamb - She Comes Undone is one of my favorite books!

Yes to American Horror Story. I think the next one is supposed to be on a cruise ship. My favorite is Asylum, even with the weird UFO stuff that made no sense. I think DH and I may start The Americans this summer. We wish we would have started watching it when it started; heard great things. Plus, I love Keri Russell (MMC fan!).

Yes to the 90's!! My sister had the CD single for "Be My Lover". I still want to buy some of the Dance Mix Hits CDs that were available back then via infomercials... brings back memories!

  • Line up some family childcare and a daycare, and it's totally manageable. I even took the baby around with me when I was recruiting for my study. It works :)

  • @cayaylonglegs @acreight13 Thanks! I'll post pics as soon as the nursery comes together. I'm not sure when it will be totally finished, but, hey, at least I got the theme figured out

@LinziLoo09 Aw I bet baby helped you recruit more people...so cute!  I'm lucky that both sets of parents will be here to help out with baby and H's employer offers onsite daycare so we are looking into that.
