Struggling to get full night's sleep since week 5

I've been really struggling with RLS at night when I try to fall asleep. I've also been waking up in the middle of the night EVERY NIGHT since week 5. Recently, I'll wake up anywhere between 3-6 with stomach ache and nausea for about an hour before that subsides and I'm able to drift back to sleep. (I guess I'm getting my morning sickness in the middle of the night) I know once you have the baby you never get to sleep again, I just didn't think it would start until the baby was actually born!! Any suggestions? Anyone else struggling with sleep at week 7?

I've tried epsom salt baths and I take magnesium at night.

I've been having terrible insomnia for about a week now, too. I wake up every night between 2-2:30 and can't get comfortable or relax enough to fall back to sleep till around 4:30. My 2 year old then wakes me up between 5:30-6:00 So I've been dragging pretty bad. I googled it last night, and apparently insomnia during pregnancy is extremely common. Perhaps it's God's way of preparing up for the sleepless nights ahead.

  • I'm with you girls. I've woken up every night since I hit five weeks at around 3am and cannot fall back asleep for at least an hour or two because every sleep position is uncomfortable and I feel the constant need to shift around. Genuinely considering a pregnancy pillow now.

  • I had terrible insomnia with my first, I ended up taking sleeping pills and I immediately went from wondering how I would make it to the end of each day to feeling pretty good.  I started on the sleeping pills much sooner this time and I feel so much better!   I know a lot of people are against any meds but my OB tells me it's OK and I honestly don't think I could work and take care of my one year old on a few hours of sleep!  I hope you can get some relief, and if not, talk to your doctor!
  • I have been waking up most nights around 1-2am with awful RLP/cramps. The other night I laid on the bathroom floor for an hour in terrible pain. I have had to start taking half a Tylenol just to be able to get through it. Then I find it impossible to find a comfortable way to fall back asleep. The cramps also create back pain so all in all its just really uncomfortable. Luckily I have had 0 spotting or any other concerning symptoms so I am hoping it just everything stretching.

My friend has suggested a snoogle so I may borrow hers for a few weeks and see if it helps. I just helps take pressure off your stomach/back so it may be worth a shot.

  • I have to get up 1-2 times a night to nurse my daughter still. But the off chance she does sleep through the night, I always wake up around 3.  For the RLS and insomnia, i would suggest trying some lavender essential oils.
  • My 9 month old still doesn't STTN so I'm up once or twice with him most nights. I've forgotten what a full night's sleep feels like which is probably a good thing I guess.
  • @ElleMF728 haha neither does my 18 month old!
  • Pregsomnia is common. With dd1, I struggled with sleep in the first and third trimesters, but slept great in the 2nd. Insomnia in the 3rd trimester is intense. I remember being awake almost every night from 2-5. With this pregnancy, I'm awake for about 2 hours in the MOTN. It's a bear.
  • I was just remembering my pregnant sleep with DD1, and as I explained it to DH, I said: 1st trimester sleep: insomnia for no reason  2nd trimester sleep: sleep great until a wicked leg cramp  3rd trimester sleep: all hope is lost... can't get comfy, have to pee...

  • I get mild nausea in the middle of the night and usually have to pee between 1 and 3. I am usually able to fall back asleep, but it makes me more tired during the day. Naps are basically a necessity in my life.
  • I am right there with you all. I am up because of a 2nd or 3rd wind hit me. Then when I finally pass out I get maybe 2 or 3 hours then I feel wide awake again. Takes me a while to get back to sleep. But then my alarm will go off to get my 5 year old up and around for school. Or on the weekend my 3 year old and 5 year old come in and wake me up. Sometimes my 1 year old wakes up screamng too. So I end up gettign up because my hubby is worthless. and i have to drag my way thru the day and try to smile for the kids...ugh....a week of un interupted sleep would be nice....

  • Wow I am the opposite. I've been sleeping better than normal! Haven't even been waking up to go to the bathroom, which I normally did once a night pre-pregnancy. Hopefully I don't start having insomnia anytime soon....

  • I second the lavender essential oil!  Rub some on the bottoms of your feet and/or diffuse it in your room and/or put a drop on your pillow :)
  • I'm right there with y'all! I am 5 weeks and I am having bad insomnia. I can't get to sleep and then when I do, I wake up every couple hours and it takes a while to get back to sleep. It's driving me crazy! Then, I end up napping during the day and I think that is making it worse.

  • I'm right there with you. I sleep with a cpap and so there are only a few comfortable positions anyway, but I used to be able to sleep through the night without having to reposition. Now, however, I can only lay still a few hours before having to move. Oh,  and midnight sickness is a little ridiculous. As a matter of fact, my cpap was making me gag with the forced air last night. That was new and unpleasant.
Oh well, it's just a minor discomfort and it's absolutely worth the end "prize". :)

  • I'm with you and have no solution. I wake up to anything i would have normally slept through. Like a bug hitting window. I'm up by like 4:30am which is NOT me. You gotta wonder if something like  benadryl is safe? Probably not considering right now  i have a cold and was told i could use "tylenol, vicks, saline spray and halls cough drops" not much we can take. I'm going to try sleeping in the guest bedroom in our basement. It's quiet dark and cool.
  • Unisom is safe. I take a half pill with B6 and it works great (for sleep and nausea).
  • I also recommend lavender oil or lotions woth lavender.

I'm lucky DD sleeps through the night.  I'm exhausted enough.
