Baby weight gain

So my little dude Henry lost 10% of his body weight after being born. When we left the hospital he was 6lb 7oz. When we went to his first appointment at 5 days old he was up to 7lb 5oz and at his 2 week check up he came in at 8lb 4oz. Pedi was impressed! So we just weighed him at home tonight a week later pre-bath (25 days old) and he is now 9lb 1oz!! Wth?! I thought EBF babies gained weight more slowly?

Kelly mom says 5-7oz per week is average... This was 13oz! Am I over feeding?? I nurse on demand for the most part but try to keep him at 2 hrs during the day and 2-4 at night. He's quickly out growing his newborn size clothes.

How much has your LO gained? What size clothes are you doing? Is Henry gaining too quickly? Will this growth rate stay this way? Why do they grow up so fast?? Argh!

Re: Baby weight gain

  • This all seems normal to me- I remember my son was 7 oz above birth weight by day 5, and my daughter has gained about a pound at her 2 week check up. My milk has a very high fat composition- you can see like a half inch of cream on top when I pump- so it makes sense they would gain weight a little faster. As far as I know you can't over feed a breast fed baby, they'll just spit up any excess, so it sounds like you're doing fine!

Our pedi said to feed them as long as they want it. DS knows when he's full and pushes the bottle out if he's done or closes his lips (it's really cute). Babies are smarter than you think. I don't think you can over feed a baby as long as they keep it down.
  • My LO was 8 lbs 2 oz at birth. At her 4 day appt, she was 7 lbs 10 oz. Dr said that's fine but at her appt 2 weeks later they wanted to see her back to her birth weight. At that appt, she was 8 lbs 10 oz. So she gained a pound in a week. The nurse and dr were both impressed and said that's a great thing. Seemed like a lot to me. My LO is 4 weeks today. She's in between newborn clothes and 0-3 months.

Everything @Bellodomani said. BF babies pace themselves, so you won't overfeed. I think that some bf babies gain more slowly month 1 because of waiting for milk to come in, but when they spurt, they really spurt! You'll likely see a weight chart of drastic spurts and temporary plateaus over the next year. If it helps for reference (though there's a wide range or normal), I bf on demand:  DS2 was 7lb 8oz/21" at birth and will be one month tomorrow. He's now 10lbs 11oz/23"and is wearing 0-3mo size, but they're starting to get a little snug.

@artteacher19 this is all normal. You are not over feeding him at all. You must have a great milk supply which is awesome!! My now almost 4 year old gained rapidly like that and was out of newborn clothes by 2 weeks old. He will hit a plateau at some point and gain still but it won't be these huge initial gains like you're seeing now. so don't worry when that happens. ;)
in other words you're doing great momma keep it up!!!

  • Thanks everyone! I do struggle I think with over supply. I've noticed Henry wanting both breasts finally the last couple days. Before he could only do one and I was block feeding. Hopefully this change balances out quickly cus my boobs are hurting again!
  • DS is 2 1/2 weeks. He lost 12% of his birth weight, so we had to switch from breastfeeding to pumping (apparently he wasn't taking enough of the hindmilk and was burning too many calories by using me as a human pacifier). In the past five days, he's gained 13 oz.

At this stage, babies can't gain too fast. DS could never fit into newborn clothes, but is fitting well in 3 month clothes (some looser and tighter than others, depending on brand).
  • My LO was 7-11 at birth. At his first appointment he was 7-4. At his 2 week check up he was 8-12! Pedi was super happy about his weight gain. He also grew 1 and a half inches. He will be 3 weeks old this Friday and he is still wearing his 0-3 and newborn clothing.
  • We started at 8 lbs 5 oz, dropped to 7 lbs 14oz. Today (2 weeks old) he's up to 8 lbs 12 oz! Sheesh...those NB clothes are so cute, but nearly too small!
  • Levi was born at 8 lbs, 2 oz and dropped to 7 lbs, 15 oz when we left the hospital. Today at his two week appointment he was up to 9 lbs, 6 oz! I couldn't believe it.

  • Ezra's one month and has gained pretty similar to your LO. My ped said he's probably just a future large person (as in tall) and I should feed him as much as I can.
remember a breastfed baby can't be over fed, and your LO will tell you if they're full!
  • We've been weighing at home and if our scale is correct LO is up to 8lbs 4oz from 7lbs 2oz about 2 weeks ago which I'm pretty happy about. :)
  • My DS was 9.2 at birth and when were discharged from the hospital for his jaundice at 5 days he was 8.4...at his one month he was 10.11 and he grew 1.5 inches...pedi was super happy with his weight and length said he is feeding great!
  • sounds like you're doing great, Mama!  At our 2week Ped visit, we were only up 2 ounces from birth weight, but because she dropped nearly a pound in the first 3 days, we were happy with that!
