Vaginal Pain

Anyone having sharp pains in their vagina?I think it is referred to as lightning crotch? I've had it periodically before, just every once in a while but today I have had it a lot. Is this normal at 27w 4d or should I be concerned? Could being very constipated have anything to do with it?

Re: Vaginal Pain

  • It's  normal, but it doesn't hurt to ask the dr.  I had it with my daughter bad expecially since she sat low. I haven't had it too bad with this one yet. But I know it will kick in more soon.

  • My SIL had really sharp shooting pains during her last pregnancy and it ended up being a sign of some issues she had with her pelvis stretching improperly. I can't remember what it is called exactly, but she is pregnant again and seeing a chiropractor regularly to prevent it from happing this time. I would mention it to your doctor, just in case. It probably isn't what she had, but even if it is, it's totally preventable/manageable and would probably give you some relief!

  • I mentioned it to my doc last week because I felt it was early in my pregnancy for it, but baby is now positioned head down, and his head is rubbing on my pelvis which is causing the pain. My ob says it's normal, and I clearly remember this pain from my previous two pregnancies. But if it's really severe pain, it could be your hips (?) seperating. I can't remember exactly, but my friends sister is having that issue and she's due in july. Baby is fine, but it is really painful for mom.
  • I have two different kinds of pain -- one is sharp shooting occasional pains that are actually in the walls of my vagina.  I call that lightning crotch.

The other is from my pelvis separating (known as SPD or PGP) - it feels like a bad bruise right at my crotch area (ie: where your pelvis bones meet in the front).  This pain is much worse and more constant.  I can feel it when I walk and when I have to lift one leg separately from the other (getting into the bathtub, putting on pants, turning over in bed etc).  Rest helps, lifting my toddler or any sort of exertion makes it worse. I had it during my last pregnancy too.  I'm told that it is ok for baby, but it is very uncomfortable to the point where it is the deciding factor for me that I likely won't try to have a third baby.

  • @Fremdschamen, the first bit you described sounds like what I feel from baby being head down and rubbing on my pelvis with his head. The second bit is what I was trying to remember. I've heard seeing a chiropractor throughout your pregnancy can help with that, so maybe look into that if you decide to go for a third?

So, I have been super emotional the past week about the pain I've been feeling. And telling DH it feels like someone has kicked me in the crotch. I got in bed tonight and thought about how to explain the pain I'm feeling and realized the joints in my legs ache. I googled and found PGP. Pretty much miserable. Didn't have this with DD. I'm wondering if labor will be more uncomfortable for me this time around. L&D with DD was a breeze, kind of worried now.
Anyway, I'm so glad you shared. I'll be letting my OB know this week and see what she has to say. Although with the bed rest I'm assuming this was brought on by DS flipping (now head down) and there isn't anything I can really do at this point.

The second thing you're experiencing sounds exactly like what I'm going through (SPD/PGP).  My doctor recommended a support belt and physical therapy.  I bought the support belt which helps sometimes but doesn't do much.  I haven't started the PT yet but I am actually thinking of looking into going to a chiropractor as well.  I'm not sure about you, but some days for me are worse than others.  Some days are so bad that walking just a little bit is excruciating, and other days it's more manageable.  Maybe see if your OB recommends PT or going to a chiropractor?

  • Sorry you both are in so much pain. I haven't found much relief from the support belt either, but haven't tried PT or a chiropractor.  I didn't find that the SPD/PGP affected my labour with DD-- I've heard in some cases that it can make pushing easier because your pelvic bones are a bit looser.

  • I think I have had SPD/PGP since maybe 20 weeks. Only 8 more weeks to go and I am hoping it goes away quickly after birth. Trying to recover from a c/s with this will be so much fun if it does not stop!

  • I had a pretty severe case of SPD/PGP starting around 20 weeks with my dd.  I didn't try a support belt or pt, but I did see a chiropractor through my entire pregnancy. Sadly, I didn't find that it made much of a difference.  The pain was so bad that I had to sleep with a couple pillows between my knees and ankles and several others tucked around.  I also couldn't move at all while I was sleeping.   On a good note, it didn't make my labor any worse and it did go away quickly after my dd was born.  I also have been lucky this pregnancy and haven't really had to deal with it.
  • @Sekerambo yes!!!! The worst part of my day is at night when I'm in bed or right now as I lay in bed. My legs hurt and so does my whole pelvic area. I can hardly pick up my legs to move. I started taking Tylenol before bed hoping it would help... It wears off before the night is over. Only 5 weeks to go!!
