Not crawling!

At first I wasn't worried but I am starting to see posts about babies taking first steps... my 9 month old rolls around the floor and scoots in circles using her arms, but doesnt even get into the crawling position yet, let alone standing or walking. She doesn't even pull herself up on anything. Should I be worried?

Re: Not crawling!

  • All children develop at their own pace. Rolling and scooting are precursors to crawling, so it could be right around the corner. I'd try to encourage it by giving as much free floor time as possible.

  • Thanks for the reply! my worry is that she has done that since 6 months and just hasn't progressed since then  :/ I will continue to give lots of floor time. She also doesn't wave or clap, I'm starting to wonder if she is behind.

Do you wave at her and clap at her? I was worried my son doesn't wave, but then I realized I've never once waved at him haha. He doesn't clap yet but he gets excited when I do, and will open his hands if I start clapping them together so I feel like he gets it.

He was pulling himself around with his arms in circles for a while too and then one day just started army crawling. He tries to use his legs but can't quite put it all together.

My friend was worried that her 14 month old her wasn't walking so she scheduled a therapy appointment and the morning of the appointment she just started walking. Kids do things at their own pace, there's no need to worry yet. Just keep waving and clapping at her and as PP said, lots of floor time! She'll get there

My friends little girl that I watch is 11 months and never crawled but started walking last week, some kids just skip it... Say something at your next appointment if you're worried but I wouldn't stress too much, DD is waving but not clapping and she just started crawling last week, she's just over 8 months

eta do you bring her around older kids at all? Because when DD is around me she just wants to sit and play with me or be held but if she sees a more mobile baby scooting around and having fun she's more motivated to chase after... Maybe something to try before signing up for expensive therapy?
  • I never crawled until after I started walking. My mom always tells me how worried she was because I would just roll everywhere and had no interest in crawling at all!  I know it's hard not to worry but babies all meet different milestones at different times and it's totally normal.  My LO just started crawling a few weeks ago but was not interested for the longest time.  I had to put him in the crawling position over and over and move his arms and legs for him to show him how it was done before he ever started to show any interest in doing it himself.  I've also read that some babies are perfectly content in just scooting or rolling and never do crawl, so maybe that's the case with your little girl!

My daughter skipped crawling & started walking on her 1st b-day. The doc isnt worried if my boys dont crawl because he said its not an actual milestone since some babys skip it. Relax momma. Just like other mommas jave said, each baby goes @ their own pace.
  • I think your LO is just fine. Mine is just now starting to sit on her own. She was capable of sitting if I put her in the position myself, but she was always wobbly and after maybe 20 seconds she would lean forward and kick her legs out so she could scoot/crawl around. Today is the first time she sat up on her own and has done it a few times since. Over the weekend I was around a 10 month old who was literally RUNNING. My LO is worlds away from walking. Every baby is different and sometimes things happen out of order, faster, or slower. And I think technically scooting is considered crawling!
  • My LO is just over 8 months old and still isn't crawling or pulling himself up. He rolls around and pulls himself with his arms but hasn't figured out how to get up in crawling position but he loves to be standing. I'm not worried about it personally. I know he'll get it when he's ready, or he might just skip it and go straight to walking.
  • Little man has been army crawling for a month or so but just started sitting the other day, he still leans on one arm. Just last week he started army crawling but pulled himself up to standing Sunday! Go figure! They start crawling anywhere between 6-10 months so I wouldn't panic. He has early intervention and I was worried to but the girl he sees says he's doing great.

  • @katythelady22 I wouldn't be worried too much. Like PPs have said, it's diff for each kiddo. I feel like most people post when they have something to brag about. It's rare that there is anything posting to the contrary. I am willing to bet there are a lot of other babies in the same boat are your LO. I bet she does it any day now.

And to be honest, I don't know if I had your daughter, if she would ever crawl. I don't think I could ever put her down! She is just so damn cute! She'd never get the practice! Lol
  • My LO had her 8 month developmental screening today and the nurse said that she is totally fine; all babies develop at their own rate. She also isn't crawling or pulling herself up. As long as your LO is developing normally in all other areas, I'd say don't worry about it!!!
  • My baby girl FINALLY a took like 4 paces forward in a crawl today, so I'm counting it! She's starting to pull up, cruise the couched take determined large assisted steps so I don't care!

I think as long as he/she shows interest to move around its all good!
  • Mine went from nothing to crawling so you never know when it will happen.  She didn't army crawl and really isn't all that interested in crawling in general. She wants to walk so bad!!
  • My LO is 8 1/2 months and isn't crawling yet. She is just starting to get into the beginning position to crawl but honestly doesn't seem to have the ambition to crawl. Haha she prefers to just be carried around:) She will stand if I put her next to the couch but she doesn't pull herself up yet. She was a baby that hated tummy time (unlike my son who loved it and was crawling around 6 months) and she's still not a fan of being on her belly. I wouldn't worry too much. As everyone said, babies get there in their own time and some don't crawl at all. My LO definitely wants to walk so I won't be surprised if she doesn't crawl a lot before she starts walking.
