Swollen feet, borderline preeclampsia (picture included) *Update in comments*

I've been dealing with "borderline" preeclampsia since around 36 weeks, I'm 38 weeks now, & my feet, ankles & calves are so swollen I can hardly walk. It hurts to even move my toes lol. I've tried elevating my feet but it doesn't help. My midwife told me to come in if I developed headaches that wouldn't go away, sharp pains in my stomach, & blurry / spots in my vision. I don't have any of that, but I do feel really disoriented & "odd". My ob office is closed today, so my only option would be to go to the local ER, but idk if the swelling in my feet is normal pregnancy swelling or if it correlates to preeclampsia. Opinions? I'll be ringing my midwife Monday

  • I mean I honestly have no idea what's considered normal swelling, but that looks a bit extreme... especially with you being borderline Pre-E already on top of feeling foggy and off. I'd probably call L&D at your hospital if your OB doesn't have an after hours call center.  Monday seems like a long time to wait if it gets worse.

  • I'm not sure, but I think it would be a good idea to find out what your blood pressure is. I'm sure you know how serious pre-eclampsia can be for you and your baby. I'd go get checked out. I hope all is well

My ob said anytime I feel weird or off head straight to l&d don't bother calling.

My feet look like that every day.
  • Thank you ladies! I'm definitely going to call L&D to see if I can speak with a nurse on call since my ob office is closed to Monday. All of this is totally new to me, with my DD I didn't have any complications what so ever besides her being growth restricted. I was just unsure if my symptoms warranted an ER trip, because I know they're very busy & wouldn't want to take care away from someone who really needed it.
  • Don't feel that way L&D is there for this reason when your on isn't there. My hospital said to call when your on your way in so give them a call and they will just check you out.
  • I am literally in the same position. Swelling is at its worst ever and my feet look just like yours. I have been tested for preeclampsia 4 times now including a hospital visit and they keep saying i dont have it but my blood pressure has been slightly elivated but nothing crazy. My midwives have me doing another BP test tomorrow but its definitely making me nervous that it keeps getting worse. I dont have any advice for you but really really really feel your pain, this sucks!

Can you go to a local pharmacy and have your BP checked at a machine? Then call the on call doctor or head to L&D if elevated.

if you are also having headaches, blurred vision then definitely go to L&D.

  • Glad you're calling. Hope all is well.
  • I would go in. I had pre-eclampsia and my doctor said to go straight to L&D if I started to feel "off" or just not myself, even if I wasn't experiencing any of the other symptoms. I hope all goes well!
  • Best to go in and get checked. At a minimum go to a local pharmacy or fire station to check your blood pressure. If it is higher than it was I would for sure go in and get checked.
  • Let us know how it goes. I've been to L&D twice for less.

  • I'd call. As others have said. And poor you. That swelling looks terrible :( hope you get some answers or reassurance that things are ok.
  • *Update*
I ended up just going in to the hospital to be seen, because my swelling started to get worse, I became dizzy, started getting headaches & was seeing black spots on & off that lasted a couple seconds. Once I was put in a room they checked my pee & there was trace amount of protein, & my blood pressure was elevated but not crazy high. She also said I had hyperreflexia which is a nuerological symptom of preeclampsia. So all in all I have almost every single symptom of preeclampsia, but since my blood pressure wasn't crazy high they wouldn't treat me. I know I shouldn't say it, but I wish they would go ahead & get my little boy out. My due date is in a week & 5 days, so I know he's healthy enough to come out. I'm just worried that by "waiting for things to get worse" something is going to happen & hurt my baby & I :(

If you are concerned about him coming out due to symptoms I would have a serious sit down with the Dr's and plead your case.

Ditto. I'm surprised being so close to your due date and considering the symptoms you have that they didn't offer to induce. Hope you're feeling better and not still dealing with all those awful symptoms.
  • I was diagnosed with pre-e even with no symptoms (headache, swelling, etc) and completely normal BP (never over 110/70) just bc I had protein in my urine and low platelets and my baby was delivered at 38+3 bc of my diagnosis. Odd that they wouldn't deliver now.

  • I'm surprised too. I've been to L&D twice, once for nausea and once for elevated BP numbers and the second time they found trace amounts of protein in my urin but my blood work and BP while there were all great. Did they at least do blood tests?

  • Very cute! I'm glad he saved you the worry and came out on his own.
