Experiences with Clomid

my RE had me start my first round of Clomid @ 100 mg per day...for the ladies who have used Clomid and experienced side effects...how long did it take for side effects to start ?

also has there been any successful BFPs just using Clomid or is it usually Clomid along with something else like a trigger shot?

Re: Experiences with Clomid

  • I can't remember how long after I started he Clomid the side effects started, but I was an emotional wreck on it. I cried all the time, was on edge, and was so moody with my DH I'm surprised he put up with me. Lol. There is a reason they call it the "Clomid crazies." I took it for 3 cycles with timed intercourse and unfortunately only ovulated once on it.  Some women do get pregnant with just Clomid and timed intercourse, while others take Clomid, a trigger shot, and IUI. My RE has now switched me to Letrozole and we are going to start our first round of IUI when my next cycle starts. Are you doing IUI with the Clomid or timed intercourse?

  • I just finished a 100mg cycle & I didn't really notice the SE until the last day. Hot flashes! These have continued and I took my last dose Monday night. I've used a trigger injection every month just to give us the best possible chance. We've only done TI- no IUI yet. This my 4th round, but only 3rd with RE.
    TTC since May 2013
    Mild PCOS, Compound Heterozygous MTHFR
No Folic acid/pharmaceuticals/supplements (too many to list- private message me if interested), IVIL infusion
  • I forgot about the hot flashes! It's been a few months since I was on it. The hot flashes were terrible even after I stopped taking the Clomid. But eventually they went away. I wonder if the Letrozole will give me hot flashes too?
  • I've taken Clomid a couple times along with IUI and other meds. Last cycle I ended up just taking Clomid by itself since right afterwards we found out our treatment needed to be put on hold due to my thyroid. So far I've noticed I get really tired while taking the pills, and then unfortunately acne shows up the week after. It also may have made my lining thin the first time I took it (I was then prescribed estradiol to help counter that), but I never found out if that was the case the second time. I'm hoping to be able to try again with it next month. Good luck with your treatment!

April-May 2016: treatment on hold due to bad thyroid levels, adjusted meds
June 2016: IUI#2 w/ Clomid, Ovidrel, Progesterone, Estradiol - BFN
July 2016: on hold again due to thyroid
    July 13th: IVF consult
    August 2016: IUI#3 w/ Femara, Ovidrel, Progresterone - BFN
    Sept/Oct 2016: IVF + ICSI

  • My side effects started within a few hours of the first pill. For the first 2 cycles the side effects ended 1-2 days after the last pill, but for my most recent cycle the side effects lasted over a week after the last pill.

Hi ladies! Thank you for all your replies...sorry it has taken me so long to respond- this week has been crazy at work

today was my last day of Clomid this cycle ....I have been warmer than usual but nothing real uncomfortable- a fan at night helps that...no other side effects...Thursday I go back in for an ultrasound to see if the Clomid is working...this cycle will just be TI....no IUI yet and no trigger shot

thursday is also my wedding anniversary ...so hoping for good news that everything looks good

  • Happy anniversary! I had a friend that got pregnant with just using clomid.  It can happen!!!!!
  • I'm on my second round of it and honestly have not had any side effects. I find out this week if it worked or not but I had better signs of O this round than last round. One thing I did notice is that I was super focused and motivated while on the pills. I got so much stuff done around the house, it was awesome!
  • I have done two cycles with clomid. I was really worried that I would be super emotional, but I only seemed to experience slight headaches and hot flashes.

Did anyone notice that their ovulation symptoms changed while on a clomid cycle? During cycles before clomid, I would get very tender breasts and nipples after a positive surge. Although it was painful, I was happy to know I ovulated (or believed I ovulated). These last two clomid cycles I have had no breast/nipple tenderness after the trigger shot and a positive opk.

  • I did 150/day last month and I had zero size effects. The nurses at my office said most people don't have any, contrary to the internets. I had one follie at 25mm on day 14 and triggered that day, IUI day 15. BFN. We suspect the egg was overripe and in hindsight I would not have gone ahead with the cycle if I'd know that happens (I'm new to this). This cycle I'm aiming for the magic 18-20 mm follicles to proceed. There is a lot on info about clomid thinning the lining too, so that is another number I asked about several times. The doc and nurses said 9+ was a good to go cycle, below that might be questionable. It seems like this side effect can get worse the longer someone is on clomid.
    good luck!

  • I just finished my first clomid cycle. Unfortunately I had a Bfn but it did make me ovulate. I o'd on cd 19 confirmed by temping and a 7dpo progesterone draw. I am a little concerned that my lp was only 9 days so I'm adding extra b6 to my supplements and daily red raspberry tea. I didn't notice any side effects. I took it at night with tylonol pm because I get chronic headaches. I gave an u/s next week to check for cysts.

    First cycle 50mg Clomid 5/3/16, O'd CD 19 BFN
    Second cycle 50mg Clomid 6/1/16 O'd CD 18 BFN
    Third cycle Clomid 6/29/16 O'd CD 16 BFP @11dpo!
EDD April 3 and praying things work out!
  • I started my first round of generic clomid (50mg CDs5-9) yesterday.  We're only on clomid w/TI this round.  Fx!  I've read of success stories with just the hormone as well as every other variation.  I think it really just depends on your body.

I'm hesitant to comment on SEs cause I'm a symptom spotter despite my disdain for it.  I read taking the pill at night helps so I did that.  Today I'm incredibly tired but I'm not sure I can fully attribute that to the pill as somehow this 4 day work week has felt like two full weeks... ;P

    Best wishes!
