Trying to Get Pregnant

Apt. with gyn on Thurs

I think I am going to mention to him that my cycles have been really wacky the last three months and see what he says.  I am thinking that it might be time for DH and get a second SA and then for us to see an RE.  I am really thinking something isn't right with me and with DH's history an RE may be our only chance.

What do you ladies think?

  • Couldn't hurt I suppose, I'm trying to figure out the best way to medicate DH's sperm on ritalin so they can stop swimming in circles and find my damn egg.

  • i think openly talking with your gyn is the first step.  jot down your thoughts and points now while they're in your head.. that way you'll take full advantage of your time with dr. gyn and really have things together for him.

    GL girl!

I honestly just peed myself a little.

  • I agree, it can't hurt to ask questions and get some more information and insight into what might be going on. I'm sure things will work out all right!!

DH keeps saying that he wishes he could put a GPS on his sperm so they know where they're going!! He said "they might just be in there swimming blindly" *lol* I told him they pretty much are!!

  • LOL about GPS on sperm...he could make a ton of $$$$ Wink
  • It can't hurt.  Given his background a RE would be likely to see you erlier than normal.  GL!

  • I'm not sure what your story is.  Typically people wait until the 1 year mark unless there is a real reason to suspect a problem and it sounds like you might have one.

What is your reasoning for going early to the RE?

  • smilelari - my DH had testicular cancer 3 years ago and is about 2.5 years out of Chemo.  My gyn said he would refer us whenever we wanted but I wanted to wait to see if we could do it naturally but with my cycles the last few months getting longer I am wondering if I may have a hormone issue or even PCOS.
  • I would probably do exactly what it sounds like you are planning on.  Go ahead and get a follow-up SA.  Talk to your gyn about testing for PCOS (u/s and bloodwork).  I'd probably still hold off on talking to an RE until you get the results of these tests back. But, make sure that the SA is done at a urologists or RE office - some sort of lab that specializes in IF - rather than at a hospital lab.

  • I don't remember where his last SA was done, his first one was done at a hospital that freezes sperm (that was before chemo).  I am trying to get the paperwork from his Dr on his second SA but that was a year and a half ago so he probably does need a new one anyway.

Obviously if my gyn doesn't think we need to see an RE yet we wont go that route.

    I appreciate your input

  • 2 reasons I say to do initial testing with the gyn

    1.  It may make a difference in what your insurance will cover.  Many insurances will cover testing through an ob/gyn and not an RE.  You might want to check

    2.  Once you start working with an RE it tends to become much more stressful

  • Thanks again, I need to look into our insurance.  We actually have pretty good insurance and after this week my deductible will be met for the year which is great.

I totally understand #2 which is why I wanted to TTC without an RE's assistance when my gyn first offered to refer us to one.

I guess I will see what happens after my apt.
