Infertility

New and Frustrated

Hi everyone,

I'm not new to this site but I haven't posted in a while so I'll reintroduce myself. I'm 31 and my DH is 30. We've been trying for 5 years now and have faced some obstacles with my health and a misdiagnosis for my infertility. Originally they thought I had a double uterus but after the third SHG and an MRI they determined it was actually a uterine septum with a possible double vagina. The specialists have suggested that I have surgery to correct it followed by IVF to give us the best chance of conceiving. They will do the IVF retrieval, perform the surgery and when I am healed do a FET.

Yesterday was my day 1 and i called the clinic to start the process and left a message. They were supposed to get back to me today to schedule my blood work and ultrasound and start me on birth control. They didn't call me back with my appointment time and when i called them back today to inquire they didn't answer. Have I missed my opportunity this month and will have to wait until my next cycle?

In all honesty I am extremely unhappy with my doctors but don't feel I really have an option to replace them. The doctors in my city already farmed me out to a bigger city since they don't do IVF and I have already had to redo all my testing and wait 8 more months for this doctor to be available. They don't return my calls, lose my messages, don't relay my results to me, lose my information and seem very slipshod..... I had 3 different nurses call and ask me for my email and when i left them all that information 2 of them claimed I didn't send it to them!

For the length of time we have been trying we are really at the beginning of the IVF process .... any suggestions?

Thanks and Hi again :D

Re: New and Frustrated

  • That sounds frustrating.  Are there any other doctors within a reasonable distance?  I would not feel comfortable going somewhere that loses info like that.

  • There are a couple but I would have to get another referral from my OBGYN and go through the whole process of testing again . . . at least some of it. I found that when I was sent to the fertility clinic that I repeated several of the tests and then further specialized ones. The other major issue is that I live in Ontario and they have just starting funding one round of IVF excluding medication. We were one of the lucky couples to qualify . . . they only took the first 5000 applicants to apply. If I changed doctors I would have to wait until next year to reapply since they were booked up before the end of February.

I think the main reason for the mixups is that there are too many people involved in my situation. I have my OBGYN and the local fertility clinic he is associated with that is going to be handling my surgery. The RE in Toronto who is dealing with my protocol, the people in charge of the OHIP coverage, the people in charge of booking my appointments and handling my results and the nurses who will be handling the monitoring. They all need my results and information and yet none of them seem to communicate with one another. They only way they seem to get info is if I call and find out why they haven't arranged something, find they don't have a test result or info and then call the responding clinic or department and get the information forwarded.

Case in point, I had my MRI was told my results would be available in 3 business days. Waited one week and was left a message saying they needed some info and called them. The nurse didn't know why they had called me and since i was on the phone I inquired about my results. She didn't know and said she would find out. She called me back and said yes I would be having surgery and that my local clinic would be handling it. I asked what the results were and she still didn't know and when i asked her to find out she had to call me back again! They explained the results and said that someone would be scheduling me for surgery. Two weeks later I called again and my local clinic and the Toronto clinic both thought the other was handling it and so had done nothing. I got that straightened out and now have an appointment to discuss what exactly they will be doing and then have to wait for an actual booking date for the surgery.

    Sorry for the long response.

Your situation sounds very complex. Is there anyway you could schedule a meeting with all parties involved to see if there is a way they can coordinate your care better? I would certainly be frustrated if I were in your shoes.

  • My situation is a little complicated . .. . even my DH asks me for updates on where we are currently lol. MY OBGYN and RE have had phone conversations regarding my situation but it is difficult to get them together. I have to book at least one month out for an appointment with my RE or pay 75.00 for a phone appointment (which i have done) plus he will be on vacation the month of July. It is a good thought though.

  • I'm new here and have nothing of value to offer, just wanted to extend my sympathy about the crappy situation you find yourself in. I cannot imagine the level of frustration you must be experiencing. Infertility is awful enough without loads of either incompetent or overworked staff piled on top of it. Is it worth it to ask to speak with management? Or do you fear you may get punished (i.e. get treated even worse) as a result?

I'll be thinking of you.  :*
