OT - Strep Throat

Yesterday I went to my work's wellness center to get my sore throat and earache diagnosed.  I told the physician I was 6 weeks pregnant to update my chart.  I thought I might have strep since it's super sore.  (I don't think my throat has ever been this sore.) the physician told her nurse she wasn't going to order a strep test since it wouldn't change her treatment.  I was given amoxicillan and told my throat is pretty red.  12 hours later and I had white blisters on the back of my throat.  I'm completely miserable. Nothing sounds good to eat.

Any home remedies?  I've tried gargling salt water, chicken noodle soup,  fluids,  chloraseptic spray,  green tea,  throat coat,  honey,  etc.

Someone told me pineapple juice but it burned.

  • You've pretty much named every home remedy I know.  If you have any congestion a steamy shower might help.  I also like ricola cough drops to help ease a sore throat.  I'm sorry you're dealing with Strep on top of pregnancy.  Hopefully you can get lots of rest this weekend! Feel better!

  • The only other thing you could do is get your tonsils and adenoids out if you have strep throat often enough. I had them out when I was a kid because I was getting strep about 11 to 12 times a year.

  • @PaukMeKiande I don't have my tonsils.  I had them removed in third grade.  I don't believe I've ever had strep as an adult.

@ajmcarroll With my previous pregnancy, I had a terrible bout of laryngitis. It went away on its own, after about 4 days of misery. I mixed garlic and honey in hot water. It seemed to help but tasted awful. Best of luck!

  • I'm actually home down with a bad head cold. Not as bad as strep but i know the frustration of being so little medications you can take. Aside from what you are doing...time! I prefer cold over hot things so ice cream/popsicles have been my friend. They DO have this spray that you put in the back of your throat that numbs it. I forget what it's called but it helps. I'm just not sure about it during pregnancy. I would assume it would be ok but don't take my word on that
  • I just remembered the name of the spray. It's called phenol spray. Online says it is safe for pregnancy but i would always check with MD.
