My induction process

I went to the hospital at 5 pm on Wednesday to start the induction process. They placed cervadil bc my cervix was high and closed. The cervadil was placed for 12 hours which jumped started contractions. They checked me the following morning and my cervix was still high and closed. The dr wanted to start pitocin because I was having regular contractions. It took 2 nurses to place an iv which was 2 blown veins, and 1 missed vein before an iv was successfully placed. Contractions were still pretty consistent. Dr came back and checked me around 5ish cervix was still high, baby was stationed at -3, and I was dialated 1cm. The dr proceeded to break my water which turned out to be uncomfortable and unsuccessful. Around 9pm tonight the nurse checked me again and still cervix was high and only 1cm dilated. I was over the max supposed to be given of pitocin with NO progress. The dr gave me 2 options turn off the pitocin for the night and start again in the AM or come back Sunday and start all over again with the cervadil. I chose to go back Sunday because I feel like she is just not ready my blood pressure is currently under control so there is no need to rush the process. I will be honest and state this process has traumatized me and I am just not prepared to go through it again. I have an irrational fear of getting Ivs and blood drawn and have been stuck with a needle 6 times today all together. I am really hoping Sunday goes smoother.

That sucks! Hopefully Sunday will go smoother. Why did they choose to induce if she was so far from ready?

  • My blood pressure has been consistently high which they upped my dosage last Friday which regulated it monday but he wanted to induce on Wed.
  • Im sorry to hear the induction wasnt successful and really sorry you had some clueless nurses who couldnt figure out how to put an iv in! I think you are smart to give it a couple more days. Hopefully you will have different nurses and doctors, and you can go back in more relaxed.

I will say that with my first, the induction process took 4 days and it was blessing because i ended up with a great nurse and doctor on day 4 that were super supportive of my wishes to avoid a csection. My doc on day 1 and 2 pretty much told me that she would only give me so much time and then send me right to OR. So this challenging start to the inductiom could be a good thing! Stay positive!!
  • I'm sorry! I've had my fair share of bad ivs.
I will say this, I was induced with my first. I was only about 1/2 cm dilated (not sure about effacement/station etc...) but all my ob used on me was pitocin and she broke my water. honestly, I loved being induced. once I had contractions 2min apart I got an epi. From the time they placed the Iv to when I had my LO it was 12 hours. I pushed for an hour.
I hope Sunday goes better for you! Best of luck!
  • Hoping Sunday goes much better for you!
  • I'm sorry you had such a miserable experience! Glad you were able to go home, relax and prepare for what will hopefully be a smoother process on Sunday.

  • I'm glad you were able to go home and recover. So sorry it was traumatic and I hope you have a more favorable outlook by Sunday and have even started to labor on your own so you have less interventions. Rest up lady!
  • Did they actually break your water, or were they not able to? If they did, I would be very nervous about waiting until Sunday to try again due to the elevated risk of infection. I haven't had my morning coffee yet, so I can't figure out if saying it was "unsuccessful" meant that they couldn't do it, or that they did rupture your membrane but it didn't help.

Hopefully, if you do go back on Sunday for another try, it goes much more quickly and smoothly!

  • The doctor said he "scraped" it but couldn't test me to see because the lubricant they use will give a false positive. I haven't had any leaking or gush of fluid or trickling so we are considering it not broken. I am really happy I opted to come home because my contractions have completely faded away I have no pressure or anything, I just think my body is not ready yet.

That seems like a flawed process...

  • I agree I think they were just trying to break my water too early literally my cervix was so high he could barely get to it
  • I'm so sorry that the induction didn't go well! I'm hoping Sunday is more successful. Hang in there mama!
  • @kendra0312 Can I ask why you were being induced? Doctor mentioned it sort of nonchalantly at my appointment yesterday.
  • I was being induced because of pregnancy induced hypertension
  • Ugh im really sympathetic to your situation cause i was almost exactly there last night. Second visit for pregnancy induced hyptertension. Midwife offered cervadil but reiterated that her philosophy is that natural is better and she thought at this stage it was still safe enough to put it off if i was comfortable with it. I went back and forth about it and part of me wishes i did it and part of me is happy i didnt.

On both visits the nurses had an insanely hard time with my IV they were the most painful ones ive ever had. Ive got lots of tattoos, get my blood taken very often, and needles really dont phase me but after last visit i was pretty annoyed by the IV and now last nights was just as bad and i have a nice big bruise. I am too feeling a bit traumatized from 2 bad IVs there in row. They were trying to get it last night with natural light from a window and didnt even turn the lights on.

[ This doesnt count the fact that they forced me to be in the fetal monitor for IMO no reason and i was totally unable to move from laying flat on my back. I have a chronic pain illness and really cant lay on my back ever but everytime i tried to turn to a side my pelvis could not handle being on the side without something to prop between my knees. I am in SO much pain today from my supposed to be 2 hour visit that turned into a 7 hour visit stuck in that position last night that i will be doing everything i can to NOT be in L&D longer than i need to. ]

Ill be doing everything i can now to be fighting the IV for labor. But i am also kind of settled on being content with having not done the induction and not caving and doing it over the next few days. For some reason i had my heart set on a May baby, but i have worked through that today and have now become excited for a June baby. Im trying to back off my nerves and got myself an at home BP tester. Forcing myself to rest, keeping myself extra hydrated (even though i already thought i was....) and working on my diet a bit to make sure im keeping high salt foods out of it. Really just trying to find it in myself to relax and let baby girl make her choices.
  • @TheHauntedHauswife I am really glad I waited until today. TMI I lost my mucos plug and I really feel like my body is more prepared for the induction. I feel way more relaxed and ready to do the dang thing lol! I wish I would have done an at home birth I just am not a big fan of the hospital and the uncomfortable hospital beds!
  • Glad you're feeling better today! Let us know how it goes!
  • I'm sorry the first attempt went so wrong!  Glad things seem to be better today, and I hope that everything goes smoothly!

  • kendra0312 Weirdly enough i think i started to lose mine today too! lol My BP stayed OKAY yesterday it seems to only elevate when i move about so im just staying very rested. But yeah never more did i wish i had opted for a home birth than when i was stuck sitting in the hospital for 7 hours and i really dont think it was necessary.

    Best of luck today!!!!!!!!!
  • @kendra0312Any updates?!! Baby yet?!!

  • So I have been at the hospital Sunday since 5 pm. At this point we have done 2 more rounds of cervadil and 1 more round of pitocin. I am waiting on the dr to come in this morning bc they want to start me on another round of pitocin. My cervix is still high and hard and the same 1 cm of dialation. My insides hurt so bad from being checked so many times. My urine has a lot of protein in it so I am officially pre ecclamptic. I really am just at a loss and do not understand what is going on. Everything is a wait and see process. The iv only took two try's this time so that is a positive. I am really reall trying to stay positive but it is hard.
  • @kendra0312 I'm sorry this has been such a long drawn out process for you. Hopefully things will pick up this round and baby will be here today.

  • @kendra0312 I'm sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. It sounds like you're handling everything with as much patience and positivity as anyone could. Good luck today, and hopefully you get to meet your baby very soon!
  • Good luck today! Hope things progress and you're baby arrives soon!

  • We started cytotec and still nothing! The dr will be in to check at 4pm but if nothing happens we are going to place an epidural and break my water if nothing then we will discuss a c section or next option! I just had a mild breakdown on the dr bawling like a baby! The checks are becoming so painful because my cervix is irritated from everything and it is so far up there it just hurts bad! The good news is I know I am being a pain in the ass so my husband is going to pick up cookies and cupcakes for all the staff since they have been so patient with me

Sorry you are having such a hard time! FX it gets better!!
  • I am so sorry your going through such a difficult and drawn out process! I hope the next step works and you find some relief. :(
  • The new medicine didn't do anything they want to put it in AGAIN and I just am not feeling it. How many times can you do the same thing and expect a different result. Ultimately I am not the dr so I will trust their judgement but i do have some concerns. Every time I ask about them I feel like they talk circles around it.

Sorry you are having such a tough time Kendra0312! I also went through an induction process and it was very challenging considering I was not at all dilated or effaced. It's okay to get upset too since its frustrating nothing is working. Hang in there and prayers things start progressing!

  • FX you progress soon.
