Stroller Help Please!!

I am pregnant with baby #1.  DH and I want 3-4 kids and hope to have them close together. I have narrowed it down to two stroller options.  The BOB and the Baby Jogger City Select.

The BOB is $250 new (Revolution SE).  The plan would be to sell it if we had a 2nd kid soon enough and felt like we needed a double stroller.  Then we would buy a double stroller of some sort.

The City Select is $400 new. If we felt like we needed a double, we could just buy and add the second seat.

Which is the better option? I have test driven both and love them both. Will the BOB retain it's value well enough to justify the $150 upfront savings if we have to sell it? Will we really need a second stroller? I also hope to get heavily involved in babywearing, but sometimes strollers are just a necessity.

What do you recommend? Poll for easy viewing of results and any comments appreciated!

Re: Stroller Help Please!!

  • Go with the Bob and plan on a double stroller later.  I've tried the city select with the add on seat and it's just kind of awkward in my opinion.  My boys were 16 months apart and we used our double stroller a ton (still do, but we've now moved to a double wide instead of a tandem).

  • Go with what you need and like better now. You never know how plans can change. Also-- I see used Bobs for sale all the time on Facebook and they get snatched up pretty quickly. We bought our Bob used from someone who was going to buy a double Bob. For what it's worth-- I've used both and my absolute favorite is still uppa baby visita.

  • Make sure that the BOB has a front wheel that turns if you're using it for every day. Our BOB only has a locked front wheel but we only use it as a jogging stroller (where it needs to be locked). It's a million times earlier to walk around town/the mall/zoo/wherever if the front wheel turns.

Yes, the UPPAbaby is amazing. I just can't justify spending over $800 on a stroller! I plan to do a lot of babywearing.

I have used the BOB and City Select single quite a bit personally from babysitting. I don't have a strong preference.  My cousin has twins and has the City Select double and I did like it from my limited use of it.

  • I have both of those strollers.  CS for everyday use and BOB for walks/exercise -it's too bulky for everyday use.  Both will also maintain their value, I see ppl selling them used all the time and they get snatched up really quick with lots of ppl interested.

  • We got the City Select with the hope of it saving us from having to buy another when/if we have another kiddo. We are couch potatoes so didn't really look into the Bob. My"dream stroller" would be the Stokke Xplory so the CS is a nice budget version that still has all the different positions.
    My inexperienced 2 cents. Shrug.

  • I plan on getting the city select. Since two of our little ones will be 17months apart. Plus I can get a glider board.

  • I think it depends on your lifestyle. We love our BOBs (we have a single and a duallie), and we go "off road" a lot. We spend a lot of time outside and wanted something that could handle more rugged terrain. I don't think I would like it as much if I were doing a lot of mall shopping or navigating really crowded places. The resale value is good, but they just rolled out a new model this year, so the older model will probably take a hit in value because of that. You'd be fine with the new one (or you could buy a 2015 model used and save $).
  • Hi @misspuppychow! Something to consider with the City Select is that you can also add a glider board. If you have three kids close in age, all three can ride along! The City Select is a more versatile choice because it can be anything you need it to be at the time: a single, double or triple stroller. The BOB is a great stroller, too, but unfortunately, they have a low resale value. I'm the owner of Strolleria, a stroller retail/e-commerce store, and am happy to answer any questions you might have. Good luck!

I'm surprised to hear that BOBs have a lower resale value, because they're one of the hottest items that people buy on the facebook garage sale sites.  They go quick, like within minutes of being posted, and always for several hundred dollars even when they're decently used.  Maybe it depends on your demographic....

I know for us we needed a BOB. Around here we are lucky if the road is paved, and many parking lots aren't - not to mention a lot of events we'll want to do with the little guy will be in farmers fields etc. The big rugged tires and suspension were a must have for shoving a stroller around a field. And I used to run, so hopefully by next year we'll use it actually as a jogging stroller - which the city select is actually not, technically speaking.

As far as resale, we paid $220 for ours (retails for $400-500)and couldn't find one online / at a resale shop in the same model for under $200. The lower end model, which retails for $300 new, was usually about $150 online, and are usually snapped up within a day or so. It may be nationally the resale value is lower, but the stroller is like a Subaru around here - you NEED the features, so you are willing to pay more used. I swear my next car I am buying in Florida and driving back, the AWD premium disappears on used cars down there, up here it can add 5 grand.

That being said, the bob is heavy, and big. We also bought a (used) joovy stroller, which is light weight and compacts much smaller for shopping trips / trips into civilization.

  • Lurking..

I was all about a stroller as a FTM but have only used it a handful of times. If you're planning to babywear you'll be surprised how much you don't need a stroller.

Sorry to bring up another option, but the Bumbleride Indie is a great conpromise between those two other two strollers. Look at the Bumbleride website for a video on the Indie and Indie 4. I was able to ger one used for less than two years online. There is a double stroller too.

Absolutely love mine!  I have both the single and double and have used them both a lot, both on the trails and at the mall.
