Choking on sippy cup & can't hold bottle .. Worried mama :(

Hi everyone,

My son is 7.5months old and I have tried him on a sippy cup since 6 months but not regularly.. I have put just water in it but he has such a strong suck that he chokes really badly almost on every suck he takes.. Even with his bottles he's still on the slow flow teats, except for one bottle but he manages to finish 200ml of formula in a matter of minutes so I usually give the slow flow bottles.

I'm getting worried now because in 4.5months he's supposedly supposed to be off formula and preferably drinking his cows milk from a sippy cup..

Aside from the choking, when he's drinking from his bottles he can't hold the bottle up by himself yet? He can hold it for a couple of seconds then drops it and when he goes to pick it up it's upside down and he doesn't know how to turn the bottle around to get it back in his mouth..

Is anyone else having these problems or is it just my little man? Not sure what to do. He's meeting other milestones, like sitting unsupported although he still topples over occasionally and he started crawling (more like dragging lol) about 2 weeks ago..... Should I be worried? What do I do?

Re: Choking on sippy cup & can't hold bottle .. Worried mama :(

  • I wouldnt be too worried mama. As long as hes hitting other milestones. My LO isnt grasping the sippy cup process either. She cant figure out how to tip it..
Ive tried like 5 different cups. Even the spoutless. But no go.
Also shes sitting unsupported w occasional toppling and does the drag crawl as well.

Maybe mention it to ped at 9m appt if things havent changed ?

I swear some times we wake up in the morning and shes learned something new overnight!!

Hugs! It tough to not worry about these little humans were responsible for. :)

  • My daughter is about the same age, still uses the low-flow nipple, and is nowhere near holding the bottle up by herself. I haven't even tried a sippy cup yet! She hasn't started anything close to a crawl, either. I have zero worries. I got all of my worrying out of me with my son - didn't crawl until 10 months or so, didn't walk until 17 months, didn't really use more than 3 words until after he turned 2...today he is a jumping, climbing, wonderful little 4 year old with an amazing vocabulary. I understand why you're worried - I remember talking to the ped so many times about the crawling and the walking, and later about a speech therapist, but he said each baby moves at the pace that is best for them. I STILL worried, of course, but he was right. Your LO sounds like he's perfectly on track, and you will not believe how much LO will change in 4.5 months! It may not seem like a long time but babies change so rapidly this first year. Just keep encouraging him and he'll get it when he's ready!
  • Thank you ladies! <3

These little people make us worry so much!
  • Sometimes irrational worry! I tend to be pretty laid back but watched a show that mentioned SIDS and i was up all night checking on LO
  • No worries about that, mama! They eventually get the hang of the sippy. I do the same as you and just put water in her sippy for when shes eating. At first, my daughter would choke a little too, but with practice she has gotten better. And so will yours! :) They are all so different and advance in different thing! My girl still cant sit up completely independently!!!
  • Agree with PP on not worrying every baby is so different and I'm sure your LO is just fine !

I know a lot of the sippy cups say 6 or 7 months on them but our pediatrician said to offer it at 9 or 10 months?

This is the only bottle/sippy cup that doesn't make my daughter angry when she tries to handle it on her own > https://m.target.com/p/nuby-cup-3-stage-trainer-sippy-cup-assorted-colors/-/A-15528577 < it's three stages and comes with the 2 different nipples (one bottle nipple and one sippy cup nipple). She LOVES the handles on it and it's much easier for her to hold than just a regular bottle. It doesn't leak when she holds it upside down and can't get it back around lol :relaxed:

We still use the bottle nipple (so technically it's a bottle not a sippy cup) and I don't plan on changing it out until 9 or 10 months like her pedi suggested.
