Kinda disappointed/confused

Have any of your docs told you they may not have to do an ultrasound in your 3rd trimester? My doc told me if he can determine how the baby is positioned without one he won't do one...it kind of bums me out because I secretly just want to see my little one lol but also I thought they needed to check organs and things like that....I'm just feeling like he's being super laid back almost to the point of too laid back...but it could be paranoia because it's my first and I want to be sure all is well with the world lol

I would take that as a good sign! I only had two with my first. A dating ultrasound and then one at 20 weeks. This time I have had far more but that was due to previous loss and I have one more scheduled to measure baby (I am measuring at least a week early) and to make sure that the placenta has moved (marginal previa). I wish I didn't have either of these situations/reasons for another ultrasound.

yeah, totally not necessary in the 3rd trimester!  besides baby is soo soo squished in there, if you do get a peak there won't be much to see. maybe just a squished nose:)

When I got it at 19 weeks, I asked if there will be another anytime. I was told yes, at 36 weeks. So I assumed that one is going to happen, but I have no idea, they might tell me it's not necessary.

I never expected an ultrasound after my 20 week anatomy scan unless they were concerned about something...

I don't think 3rd tri u/s are very common or even part of normal protocol unless you need it for something.  I'm getting one around 32/33 weeks to check growth and a calcium spot on his liver, but if he didn't have that spot I probably wouldn't be having one unless something else came up.  I had a few with DD because my BP went up and they did a bio physical profile, then checked her again a week later - that was very late, though, like 37ish weeks.

Also, if you've ever had a LEEP, they should do a transvaginal u/s to check you cervix at least once or twice in 3rd tri.

I know how you feel, it's a bit of a bummer, but it's normal. In the third trimester I remember I rarely got an ultrasound to see DS, unless the room happened to be empty and the doctor was just curious to take a peek.

I only have had 3rd trimester scans out of necessity (placenta issues, overdue and needing to check for fluid levels/abnormalities).  Many only get 2 scans the whole time.

It's not common to have one in the third trimester unless they are concerned about something, most often it's for growth when they think baby might be too big or too small. So although you're bummed, it's a good thing!

You could always go to a 3rd party 3d ultrasound place. They aren't allowed to tell you anything medically but you can see baby and hear the heartbeat. We had one with DD around 32 weeks and they say not to wait too long into third trimester because of baby and fluid levels they can't get clear pictures as easily.

My Dr told me yesterday that he likes to do one at 30 or 32 weeks to check growth and position, but on my ultrasound order he marked "measuring small for dates" so now I wonder if he doesn't always do them as he made it seem. He told me I am measuring one week small.

Maybe it varies between doctors but my practice always does one at 35-36 weeks to check size and position. That's they're standard practice.

I am having one at 28 weeks, but that is only because I have a fibroid on the front of my uterus that interferes with their ability to measure the baby through external means. I am excited just to get another peek at baby, but I believe that will be the last one for me. I think ultrasounds are quite costly and the insurance companies will only pay for them if they're medically necessary (I learned this dealing with a bunch of insurance BS lately).

All I know is if I ever have a singleton pregnancy after this twin pregnancy I think I am going to feel really let down with the lack of times you get to see the baby!  Right now, I'm considering high risk with the type of twins I have so I see the specialist every other week and my OB once a month.  We have had quite a few ultrasounds already.

We don't get one in the 3rd tri unless something is wrong. I've only had 1 my entire pregnancy - my anatomy scan at 19 weeks.

I'm having one every two weeks at this point. They are more nerve racking than reassuring. I feel like if everything was okay I wouldn't need them anymore.  I would be so happy if they said everything is great and you don't need the ultrasounds anymore. Although I do understand how exciting it can be to get that sneak peak!

I agree with most of the PP's, I don't think it's common to get them.  I asked my doctor if any of the rest of my appointments would be any different than my usual 15 minute check-ups and she said nope, just my strep test at 35 weeks(??.. can't remember).  She doesn't even always do cervical checks close to EDD unless you ask or there is a reason.

Thank you all for your replies:) it makes me feel much better:) I'm not looking for anything to be wrong trust me I'm actually really happy that things have gone so smoothly!! Thank you Jesus lol...I've been totally lucky....I think I had just always been under the impression that they do at least 1 ultrasound per trimester so this puts my mind at ease:) thanks again!!

We hadn't planned on one in the third trimester, but between the pre term labor issue last week, and the known side effects of a medication I am on (since  just after 20 weeks) we're going to have them monthly to bi weekly going forward to check his growth. It's possible he could have something called "growth restriction" in the third tri due to a medication, so they want to watch for it! Again, like the other ladies this is due to being high risk, and at the request of a MFM, not something my obgyn would normally do. We were expecting not to see the little guy again until birth as of our 20 week US.

Do they measure your belly each visit? That is what they have done so far for me since 24 weeks, and the MFM said that is accurate "enough" unless you have some other risk factor. Normally what would happen is if your belly measure starts to measure oddly they would do an US. They also can tell position to some degree by feel, and if you are getting close to delivery and the baby seems to be in the wrong position or they *can't* tell, then they would order an US.

Take it as good news they don't think they will need to!

I would rather not have an u/s in third tri this time. I had many many many last time because I had complications due to pregnancy. No U/S means everything is progressing correctly and would rather that then to see my baby and have the worries of complications.

I know exactly how you feel.  I don't have twins, but this is my second IVF baby and I can't even count the number of u/s I've had - I think it's probably maybe around 12 or so at this point???  I will have at least one more, most likely 2 or 3.  If I ever am able to get pregnant naturally idk what I'll do lol

lucypod With DD my midwives didn't like to do cervical checks, either.  The only reason I got one at 38 weeks was because of my BP and results of my biophysical profile, they wanted to see if I was a candidate to be induced that early, otherwise they don't like to do them until you're in labor.  We'll see how it goes this time - but since I'm a planned C-section hopefully there won't be a reason they need to check *FX*

I've had one leep and they only checked it at 20 weeks. My OB said it looked great and that there isn't a need to measure it again since I've only had one leep. Now I'm wondering if I should ask again to make sure?

I got them every 2 weeks with DS (cervix never shortened) and my current ob is checking it every 3 weeks. I'd ask if I were you.

@Curls919 ok I think I will. I have also had multiple biopsies, so I thought it was kinda weird that I wasn't having another US. Now I'm sitting here wondering about this pelvic pain if it could be related. Hmm.

I agree with @Curls919 at least one during 3rd trimester to make sure things look good. I wouldn't have had another but had some discomfort and pain and my cervix is shortening. It's good he isn't worried that means you and baby seem to be healthy. But it would worry me too and I would want to another check. I will probably have a sono every week from this point on but only because of my cervix issue. If it will make you feel better - ask.

So I initially read this thread while I was in the waiting room at the OB office earlier today. As I was reading through the thread, I found it really odd that some of you have only had 1 or 2 u/s the entire pregnancy. I've had 4  so far with a fifth scheduled for 2 weeks from now. (An 8-week pregnancy confirmation, a 12 week scan, a 20 week anatomy scan, and a 28 week scan.) I'm a FTM, not considered high risk at all, we didn't request that many u/s, it's just what our practice offers. The u/s I had at my 28 week appt. should have been my last, the next one is just to see if baby has moved out of the breeched position.

I asked my OB about this, just to see if maybe my practice is just super generous in the u/s game. She said from her experience it was pretty standard to have between 3-4 (usually once every two months) up until 28 weeks. My practice generally doesn't do u/s past 28 weeks unless there is a concern or need.

My doctor does an ultrasound each visit on the machine in every OBGYN room.  I guess I thought that was normal, maybe it's just a Kaiser thing.

With DS, I had one after I passed 40 weeks. But that was the only one I had in 3rd tri. They do them once you pass your due date to ensure your fluid levels are good and that baby is doing well. Other than that, there isn't reason to do them in 3rd tri unless you're high risk.

At my 26 week appointment, I just asked my doctor when we would get another ultrasound because I was curious how baby was looking now. She said "let's do one at the 30 week appointment" she made it seem like she wasn't planning on it until I asked. Not sure if there will be others though.

I got one at 24 weeks because i was measuring ahead and they wanted to see if anything was wrong but everything looked good, like all the pp's said only if you are high risk or they are looking out for something that has came up during the anatomy ultrasound, than they tend to check you often other than that you are just fine. I know with being a FTM you worry a lot because i was in the same boat but since she is always kicking me in there and my bladder i know she is just fine. So try not to worry :)

I get one at every monthly  appointment because we're going private. I just like getting a chance to see him! If I were home in Ireland it would likely be 2/3 over the entire pregnancy, so I'm happy I'm getting to see him more regularly. Just had one at 26 weeks and next one will be at 30

I've had 3 total (8weeks, 12 weeks and 20 week AS) I asked this week about any others - Dr said no need.  The baby is head down and no complications so I don't get any more.

With my DD I had one around 6w and the anatomy scan at 18w. That was it.

This time around I had one at 11w, two at 14w (before and after a surgery), anatomy at 19w, repeat anatomy at 21w, and my next is a growth scan at 28w. I guess I'm slightly more high risk this time, although I did have GD with both of my pregnancies.

We live in a different state this time and it's 5 years later so that could be the difference.

Most places don't offer one past the anatomy scan unless there's a medical necessity to do so. Also check with your insurance company if they'll cover even part of it after the routine anatomy scan...
  • Options
I'm having one at my next appointment but only to measure the kidneys since one was a little off in the anatomy scan. I'm pretty sure that'll be my last one assuming nothing will be wrong and they usually don't do anything after the anatomy scan.

I am high risk due to being AMA, and I was just diagnosed with GD, so I have had 3 ultrasounds so far... 10 weeks, 15 weeks,  and 20 weeks. I am scheduled for another at 32 weeks, and possibly every 2 weeks after that. We are just playing that one by ear.  With my first DS, I only had 2 ultrasounds, 1 at 9 weeks, and 1 at 20 weeks. It's not typical to have more than 2 unless you are high risk.

It may seem disappointing to only have a couple but it's a great sign that everything is looking good.  With my dd we didn't have anything after the 20 week anatomy.  This pregnancy the baby wasn't cooperating so they couldn't all the measurements needed during the anatomy scan, so they decided they wanted to do another one.  If it weren't for the baby not cooperating we wouldn't have another one.  I was actually more at peace with my first pregnancy knowing they didn't think another was necessary.  They told me not to worry and that they weren't concerned this time but I can't help but worry a little until I know for sure they have all the needed measurements.

I've only had 2 (one at 10 weeks, I think, to confirm pregnancy) and one at 20 weeks. That's standard at our practice, but I just moved, so we'll see if it is any different here! My cousin, who goes to the same practice, had an additional one because baby was not cooperating and they couldn't see all 4 chambers of the heart the first time. Otherwise, I think they only do a 3rd trimester scan if the baby is in a weird position or they are concerned about size or something else. High-risk is different, of course.
