NPR: potty training

DD is 19 months, so still young, but I can't keep a diaper on her to save my life. Just wondering when you fellow moms of toddlers attempted potty training.

I dont want to try too early and then completely discourage her from potty training until she's way older. I read somewhere that the best time to potty train is between 18 and 30 months because they are wanting to be more independent but then when they get older they are kinda "set in their ways" and don't have any interest.

We just started dd2 last month at 22 months. She is now daytime trained! I was also reluctant to start so early but I really need her to be daytime trained before the baby gets here. It took her about 10 days to get the hang of it.

Dd1 I potty trained right at 2. It took her a little longer to get the hang of #2. Again we started with daytime. She napped with panties at 2 1/2 and started wearing panties the sleeping through the night right before her 3rf bday.

    Hope this helps! good luck!

We potty trained right at two using the 3 day method. Let me know if you want the book and I can email it to you. I had my doubts, but it seriously worked like a charm with DD.

ETA: We went straight to big girl panties day and night without an issue. I was really nervous about the whole ordeal, but will use this technique on all my babies.

  • DD is nearly 20 months, and is showing tons of readiness signs.  We've been planning to do the 3-day method next month, and I would love to see the book, LWC1112! So glad to hear it worked well for you.

  • @PeachGal23 PM me your email address and I'll send it over. It's in PDF format and is a pretty quick read.

Our little guy has been showing signs of readiness for a little while now. I'm thinking of starting the 3 day method this weekend since we have a 4 day weekend off.

  • @LWC1112 thanks! I'll send you my email. I was reading the summary of the 3 day method online but wasn't sure if it was worth it to buy. How old was your DD? I know age doesn't really matter it's more about when they show signs but I feel like she's still so young!
  • DD will be 2 in June and has been showing some signs of being ready to potty train for a couple of weeks now. I'm hesitant to start trying to train before baby gets here since everything I read talks about regression when baby arrives. I don't want it to be a huge waste of time with DD & myself getting frustrated.

  • @Lynnlove28  She turned two at the end of October and we did this on Thanksgiving, so almost 25 months. We had a practice toilet out for about 5 or 6 months beforehand to get her familiar with the concept. She would use that toilet every night before bath. Then for about two weeks before we did it, I started buying different pairs of big girl panties that I knew she would love (minnie, princess, dora, etc). We got her really excited about getting to wear big girl panties and then over Thanksgiving we went for it since we knew we would both be home for 4 days. I'll email the book now.

  • @LWC1112 I'm interested in the book as well! Currently going through the same thing with my 19 mo old. Would you mind sending it to me too?

  • DD has been showing signs of readiness since she was 16 mos.  However, we just haven't had the opportunity to really get down and dirty and train her.  I'd like to do it before this baby is born, but we also want to wean her off the pacifier and move her into a big girl room.  It's a lot of big changes all at once, so we need to figure out how to space it all out without her going too crazy.

I feel the exact same way!! We moved DD to her big girl bed a month and a half ago and that was a hard transition for us. We had such a good bed time/nap routine where we could just lay her down awake in her crib and she would go to sleep with no fussing but now she throws fits if we try to send her to bed awake. We still have to lay down with her until she is good and asleep and sneak out of her room.

Plus I feel like I should take her paci away before potty training but I absolutely DREAD taking it away. She may just be using a big girl potty with her paci in her mouth. I think I'm going to start with the potty training around the beginning of July that way she is a little older than she is now but we still have a month before baby will be here.

This may sound ridiculous... But what exactly do all of you mean by "signs of readiness"? (my lack of knowledge of them probably means DD isn't displaying them...  She can sometimes tell you if she's pooped, but generally is disinterested in the potty and doesn't really seem to know she's going. Or maybe she doesn't care...

ETA: she will be 2 next month.
  • Getting ready to start our guy this weekend !! @LWC1112,would it be greedy to ask for a copy of book as well ?
He's 22 mos, tells u when he pees n poos, takes off his own diaper, etc totally showing ready signs ! Hoping he's atleast day trained by time baby girl gets here...
  • @LWC1112 pm sent ! Thank you
  • @texasmama2014 the book that @LWC1112 sent me said one of the most important signs of readiness is being able to show you what they want. Such as, when DD wants something to eat or drink she will grab our finger and take us into the kitchen and point at the fridge/pantry.

I would have her send you the pdf of the book because it was very insightful even if you don't want to do the 3 day method. It gave me a better idea of when and how to potty train.
  • @Lynnlove28  Ha, bossy pants has no problem vocalizing what she wants.
  • @texasmama2014 I can't even remember what our "signs of readiness" were. She never really told us when she needed to go potty, so it definitely wasn't that. I think because she was an early walker and talker we just decided why not try this. Plus, her nanny had a little girl who is about 8 months older than her and she was potty trained. DD watched that little girl use the potty and would tell us about how she didn't have to use diapers anymore. We also saw DD's excitement over the idea of wearing minnie mouse panties so I guess that was some kind of indication.

  • @LWC1112 Sophia the first panties might do the trick...
  • We just trained my son at 29 months using the "Oh Crap! Potty Training" method which is similar to the 3 day method. We definitely could have started earlier but I just wasn't ready. He has been doing awesome! I was seriously dreading it but it really wasn't that bad. I'm a super Type A person so I just needed a book to tell me exactly what to do to give me the confidence to take it on. I highly recommend it!

  • We potty trained DS at 28 months using this method. https://www.lucieslist.com/toddlerhood/the-two-day-method-potty-training/

He also watched Elmo's Potty Time a couple of times before and during PTing. He's been daytime trained ever since.

We still use pull ups during nap & overnight because he is a deep sleeper.
  • LWC1112   Can you email me the book?? We've been working on potty training with my almost 26 month old for a couple of months but still not totally getting it.... thanks, I will PM you!

texasmama2014 For us the signs were:  She's successfully used the potty several times after telling us she has to go - both pee and poop, she squats and hides when she poops, she HATES getting her diaper changed, she gets super upset if she pees or poops somewhere rogue when we let her run around naked (sometimes it's necessary to help air out a bad diaper rash), she's obsessed with watching mommy go pee pee and looking to see if I was successful (just great lol), she also love the potty books that we sometimes read before bedtime and is always very concerned when they have an accident lol  Edit to add that before bathtime she's very diligent about going on the potty and trying to poop - she usually doesn't go, but every single time she gets up there and at least tries, all on her own, we've never told her to do this

  • Most people think we started too young but my dd went for the first time when she was 14 months.  My mil gave her a potty chair for her 1st bday and I read that it should be set out a long time before training started.  I had every intention of doing the 3 day method at 2 but I set the potty out anyway.  Initially she just played on it and sat on it when I would go.  When she started taking her own diaper off I decided to put her on the potty, as soon as she took it off.  The first time I put her on the potty she went.  I then put the diaper back on and did the same thing when she took it off again. Sometimes she would go and other times she wouldn't.  After a couple weeks of this she started taking her diaper off and sitting to go on her own. After a break because of a last minute move, we started again and after a couple weeks went to being diaperless at home.  After another month or two I decided to bite the bullet and get trainers for on the go.  I kept a potty chair in my car and had her go right before we went into a store and right after getting out of the same store. From then on she had an occasional pee accident but that was it.  She just turned 2 a month ago and she has been accident free for months now. I can't take any credit because it was like she potty trained herself.  Sorry for the novel.  My ending thought is try it out and she if it takes, great, and if it doesn't then wait and try again later.
  • My DS just turned 3 and still in diapers. He occasionally goes pee on the potty and went poop on the potty for the first time last weekend. Yesterday him and DH were in the bathroom bc DH knew he needed to poop but DS wouldn't take his pants off.

He refuses to wear the pull ups or undies in his drawer. Seems like he is very attached to diapers. I hope it clicks with him soon!
