Re: Consumer Reports' effective mosquito repellents

  • Thank you for posting this. It's definitely interesting to see reports that Deet and Picaridin is considered safe for pregnancy. I know we all hate the chemicals, but yikes, Zika scares me.

  • @Sumo2519 thank you for posting. This has definitely been a concern of ours. What great timing, eh? We're spending all this time, money, and energy trying to get pregnant, and now there's this virus to contend with. We live in NC, so being in the south def makes me a little nervous.

I just bought a couple of the Sawyer products- they looked the best.

  • The other reading I was doing this morning was that Zika can be spread by blood (though usually blood transfusions, not just exposure to blood from a cut) and semen.

Our RE made both my husband and I both sign a consent form that we would not travel to a list of certain countries, and he also said it can be spread by semen.  My husband is a mosquito magnet, so we will definitely be investing in some of these bug sprays this summer (especially living in South Louisiana).
  • I don't live in the south but I am really worried as well I haven't found anything that keeps me from being bitten and now that we are in the process of ivf at the start of summer zika scares the crap outta me

  • And it isn't just the southern states that need to avoid mosquito bites... there have been quite a few Zika cases reported in NYC!

I hired a pest control company to spray my yard for mosquitos. I am more of an indoor person, but I want to be careful too. I will look into a spray b/c I am also in a southern state.

  • @wifeinraleigh28 The report I read said that there weren't any mosquito bite cases in the US, those infected in the US had been traveling. Not sure if that is still the case.

  • @wifeinraleigh28 Seriously. The CDC has some maps and info, if you google Zika virus and look just at the CDC stuff you'll get some good details.

  • We aren't really expecting to see infected mosquitos traveling here from other places. The risk is that someone in your neighborhood travels, acquires zika while traveling, and then they get bit by a few local mosquitos. Then you have local infected mosquitos.

After the Olympics, I think the risk for this will really increase.

I've already implemented anti-mosquito protocol. I'm wearing long sleeves, and applying repellent 2-3 times a day. Mosquitos are already swarming around my house in Georgia, and they have always loved me.
