Now that May is well underway, do we have any VBAC babies yet?! Tell us your birth stories, successful vbac or not. How is everyone else feeling about their upcoming birth plans? Share your updates!
Here is my update:
I am due today, May 10th. At my appt this afternoon, my midwife told me they would allow a "gentle induction" at 41 weeks if I don't go into labor on my own. She said they typically avoid induction for a vbac, but because I had 2 vaginal births (including a successful induction with #2) prior to my csection they will do it! I am REALLY happy about this, even though I will hopefully go into labor on my own before then.
Edit to add for anyone interested that she explained a "gentle induction" involves a foley bulb and low doses of pitocin. She also swept my membranes at 39 and 40 weeks.
Re: VBAC updates and stories!
BFP 1: 9/15/2013 | DD 5/23/2014
BFP 2: 9/15/2015 | EDD 5/26/2016
I began having intense but inconsistent contractions at 3 am Thursday morning. They felt much stronger than the false labor ones I'd been having, so I asked DH to stay home from work. I had untimeable but horrid contractions all day with no break. At 8 pm they were becoming more intense. I said screw the 5 min apart rule, this is labor, lets go to the hospital!
When they checked me I was 4 cm so they decided to admit me. The midwife said "Lets just see what your body decides to do." Just then labor kicked up hard (2-5 min apart, but still not consistent or timeable!). I labored for 4 more hours before asking for an epidural around 2:30 am at 6 cm. It was magical - I was able to catch a few minutes of sleep (had been laboring for 24 hours at this point, so I was exhausted!). About 5 am I was fully dialated and cervix was effaced. The midwife told me to wait till I feel lots of pressure before we push, so we waited almost 2 hours. (I napped, I rested, did I mention how magical epidurals are?) I felt a lot of pressure about 7 am (as my nurse said, "You should feel like you need to poop!") I pushed for about 15 minutes, and out he came! 8 lbs 13 oz and 21 1/2 in! The midwife broke my water just before I began pushing. It was a very calm, unintrusive labor - no pitocin and very few cervical checks. The midwife allowed me to push when I felt like it, no real coaching (although she was very encouraging!). I am thrilled with my vbac experience, and am so glad I stood up for myself and switched to a vbac friendly provider when I was 34 weeks pregnant. It was a leap of faith and I'm so glad I did it!
